Creighton/UConn

Right now it's you and us at the top of the big east leaderboard, and you own the tiebreaker against us... at least for now.
Do you happen to know what the tiebreaker is if you win at Gampel and we finish tied? (Hey, dare to dream...)

Very winnable game for us on Saturday based on what we’ve done the last few weeks. Need to hold serve on our Home Court.

Creighton really misses Kaluma. Ashwowth is good, but he’s not Nembhard. Alexander is also prone to bad shooting nights.

They’re also with us in terms of depth, second game on a long road trip.

It’s time to beat them.
I watched Cam Spencer bullying the smaller Ashworth a few times last night, and of course Spencer himself has struggled with Seton Hall's physical guard play both this season and last season. This seems to bode well for Seton Hall, and I agree that he's definitely not as good as Ryan Nembhard.

Francisco Farabello hasn't been too bad this season in the limited time I've seen him, but he's still not much of a scorer. He holds his own better than Ashworth on defense, however.

I think the biggest factor is going to be how well we can get to the rim against Kalkbrenner. He is slow and unathletic (getting majorly exposed tonight), but he's a big presence at the rim.

Kadary will have a huge size advantage defensively on Ashworth. That plays into our favor. Have to contain Scheierman, he killed us last year at the Rock. Be physical with him, get him to play frustrated and reckless - he'll take bad shots. Trey Alexander is their best player and is going to get his. Great mid range game.

Swarm them with defense, rebounding, and physicality. That's the recipe. They are now getting blown out in Storrs, so have to think they'll re-group and be focused for Saturday.
Maybe use EHE out at the perimeter to pull Kaulkbrenner out from under the basket??

Don't think McDermott will fall for that. If I'm him, I'd be okay with EHE attempting a couple threes.
Yes but if he hits it will force his hand. Both his attempts looked good. 1 rimmed out bottom on the other. Is a lot easier to hit a wide open than driving in on a 7 footer in the lane.

That rematch and the ones in Omaha and Milwaukee are a concern. I think Danny is particularly going to want to crush us. Hoping for a win Saturday to ensure at least a split.
The rematch vs UConn will be an insane atmosphere. It’s their senior day and they’re going to be out for revenge. Not to mention it could be two teams competing for a conference title.

Over thinking this.

EHE taking or making 1 or 2 wide open 3s as our back up center when he has attempted 4 total on the season is a bonus not a game plan.

Here is an idea…

Let’s take EHE’s game vs St. John’s, Coleman and Brown’s game vs Monmouth, and Sanders 2 threes against Providence…look at all those positives and just assume they can now duplicate that in every game the rest of the year.

Combine that with the phenomenal play over the past 7 games by our starting 5 and I predict we won’t lose a game the rest of the year. 😏

Record versus the top teams in the standings. Move down until you find a difference.
And we have a golden opportunity to already have a game in the pocket against Connecticut, Marquette, St. John’s, and Creighton. Wow.

Exactly how I see it too. Here’s hoping.

Gotta watch them on the other end though. Creighton takes 47% of its shots from 3 which leads the league. Ashworth has taken 43 3’s, 16 2’s. 👀

According to Sha, a few players in interviews and several on this board this is part of his game. He started the season with a concussion and has taken some time to round into shape. If this is the case it should absolutely be incorporated. We’re not going to make a living in the paint the war we normally do with a 7 footer planted in the paint. I’m certainly not saying he should take 10 3’s. Just give them something to think about so they don’t pack the paint or allow a block party. Only guy I’m comfortable driving against Kaulknrenner is Richmond.

You go and compare your record against the next highest team in the standings until one team gets an advantage. If it is exactly the same through all the standings then it goes to coin flip.

I just double checked your record. If we win in Gampel and neither of us loses to another team in conference, then we would get the tiebreaker because of your loss to Xavier.

No, I would guess it would be out of conference record, but it could be point differential.
Neither …

as mentioned above, go down the final standings board and compare record against each team until there is a difference.

Yep. Check my edited post above which has a link to the tiebreaker formula in it.

Won‘t be easy as Kalkbrenner will take away a lot of what we do in the paint. And because of him they can stick with our perimeter guys all over the court. But if we get the W on Saturday— WOW!

I think the fact we played Connecticut with Clingan in there for most of the game may help the approach. And I think we had gone from down 10 to up 8 before Clingan hurt his foot.

Let him beat you . Our big men can be physical enough to slow him down. He's not really much of a post up guy anyway. Mostly lobs to him .
Just don't let guys like Alexander, shyerman or Ashworth get comfortable with the 3..

CU has the big three who ar all league level guys, a good team and a cagy coach.

Tough one. We will both do what we do and see how it turns out. I feel good but I am not comfortable!!

$1 dollar mug nites at Steve Gepps Pub in Belmar, but hey, that was in the 70s lol. Back then we thought a 16 ouncer was big.

The mid range two was there all night for us. I suspect it will be for you as well.

Kalkbrenner played a one man zone when Johnson was in and dared him to shoot. I suspect the Hall will see the same thing. He's very disciplined so it will be very difficult to get him in foul trouble. As CL82 noted, 10' shots will be important.

I respect the hell out of this CU team and their coach. But, they have not looked as good lately as I expected.

I can see them coming out with vengeance after getting embarrassed by UConn. Hall better bring their A game and the fans better come with some grit too.

If he is manning the post then our guards need to drive and stop and pop or kick it out. He will block anyone trying to hit a layup or dunk if he anywhere near the basket.

Pick & roll with Kalkbrennee really concerns me. Centers have to be disciplined.
Guards gotta stay put on the wing and frustrate the hell outta them. We are more athletic. Teams like creighton dont like to be made uncomfortable.

As much as we rely on Kadary, Dawes, Davis, and Addae-Wusu to play the majority of minutes (they each average between 30-32 MPG), Creighton really leans on Alexander and Scheierman. Alexander averages 35 MPG and Scheierman averages 34 MPG.

This week they've relied on them even more - Alexander played 74 of 80 minutes in their two games this week, and Scheierman played 79 of 80 minutes (he was out for one minute of tonight's game and played all 40 minutes against St. John's). Kalkbrenner has also played more minutes than usual this week. With one less day of rest and on the second half of a road swing, can we wear them down on Saturday?
Couldn't tire 'em out even after three overtimes.

That was one hell of a game - instant classic.
Rough result but it's not like both teams didn't give their all.
