ATLANTA - Seton Hall University graduate guard Daisha Simmons (Jersey City, N.J.) has been named one of six national finalists for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division I Defensive Player of the Year award, Wednesday it was announced by the association.
Simmons is joined on the exclusive list of finalists by Syessence Davis (Senior, Rutgers University), Jordan Jones (Junior, Texas A&M University), Kendall Noble (Sophomore, Western Kentucky), Kiah Stokes (Senior, University of Connecticut) and Elizabeth Williams (Senior, Duke University).
The winner will be announced during the Fifth Annual WBCA Awards Show, which will be held in conjunction with the NCAA Women's Final Four in Tampa, Fla., on Monday, April 6 at 5:30 p.m.
Simmons, who last month was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year, becoming the first player in SHU history to earn that distinction, thrived as a defensive stopper throughout the 2014-15 season.
A unanimous First-Team All-BIG EAST selection, Simmons frequently impressed as an on-ball defender, as she was regularly charged with matching up and shutting down opposing team's star guards. She ranked second in the BIG EAST averaging 2.4 steals per game and flashed the ability to strip any ball handler in the open court.
Her 81 steals rank third for a single-season at Seton Hall. Simmons had 13 games recording at least three steals, and posted a career-best seven on two occasions, victories over Creighton (Dec. 3) and Butler (Dec. 30). Against BIG EAST foes she averaged a league-leading 2.8 steals per game, and was 11th with 4.5 defensive rebounds per game.
Simmons, who transferred to Seton Hall as a graduate student prior to the 2014-15 season made a significant impact on the program in just one season in South Orange, helping lead the squad to a school-record 28 wins and the first NCAA Tournament berth since 1995.
She ranked third on the team averaging 16.7 ppg, along with 5.6 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.4 steals per contest. Simmons scored in double figures in 31-of-34 games, with a pair of 30-plus point performances, netting a season-high 32 points in an overtime win at Georgetown on Jan. 25.
