Totally great defensive effort by Seton Hall at Marquette. This could be an important win
down the road.

The Seton Hall team has to show maturity here and put this game in the rear view mirror. If
they think they're just going to show up and beat DePaul, they could get beat once again. A loss
to DePaul cancels out all the hard work of tonight. I know some of our fans will say there is no way
we will lose to DePaul. That's a mistake. There is enough talent on this team to paste DePaul at
Prudential, but only if they show up with the right mindset. The Marquette performance shows us that
this team can be part of the BigEast story this year. Let's not let DePaul derail our season once again

The players were quoted prior to Marquette and WSU as wanting to avenge last years loss versus those teams. And they played very well both games. DePaul swept us last year and could beat us Saturday if our guys aren't motivated to win. I would hope revenge is on their mind.

IW said something along the lines of "you know how we handle revenge games" when asked before MU.

I hope they celebrated last night but focus needs to be 100% on DePaul.

As a fan I'll dream about what could be a huge game at Pavillon next Wednesday.

It's not about revenge. That is always a mistake. It's about playing our game as best as we can.

Tom K

I disagree. It's about elevating our game because of what happened last year when we lost both games to DePaul. That motivation will pump our guys up.

Revenge games are great IMO as long as the team harnesses the aggression with composure.

That's a lethal combination.

If we seek revenge and don't play well we lose. It is always about playing your best, regardless of other motivations. Get up for every game and play your ass off. And if you have some revenge in your heart and use it for extra motivation, terrific.

Dick, it's nearly impossible for college teams to get up for every game. It's a long season (especially when you add in May through July BB workouts and summer school) combined with the academic demands that the players have means that any extra motivation is a good thing.

nothing wrong with revenge...you should play with that in mind.. makes you a winner. Play smart!

Find me the coach who accepts a bad performance by saying we were bound to not be up for a game eventually...lol. just cause you want revenge doesn't mean you play better.

If they play defense anything remotely like they did yesterday, DePaul will be a stroll in the park. If they don't, who knows.

It may not mean you play better but revenge games certainly means the players are highly motivated and up for the game .

I saw part of the GT - DePaul game last night and DePaul will be no pushover plus Garrett is a hell of a player .

We watched into the second half. DePaul looked like it would master a rather sloppy Hoya team, but as the game evolved, the Hoyas imposed their will and DePaul looked like the more familiar team we have known.

It seems too simple at last. We have been playing with two to three great horses a year for ages. This year we are playing with five to seven. It makes ALL the difference.

It's pretty surreal to think of the agony DePaul has caused for us over the past 5+ years given where their program has been. Hope we rout them on Saturday.

Just think what we can do when we go 9 or 10 deep and I can see us doing that next year with the additions of Powell and Thomas. You take this year's starting five , add in Singh and Nzei plus Powell and Thomas and whoever else on the roster steps up.

We have that really grueling stretch upcoming immediately following the DePaul game. Starting 2-0 is a HUGE asset for this team and based on the way we've looked these past few weeks, I do not think you'll see the kind of soft effort and disconnect that characterized previous KW teams in this spot.

Wed Dec 30 at Marquette
Sat Jan 2 vs. DePaul
Wed Jan 6 at Villanova
Sat Jan 9 vs. Creighton
Sat Jan 16 at Providence
Wed Jan 20 vs. Villanova
Sat Jan 23 at Xavier

I hope not! 11am on January 2nd is a tough spot. Easy spot to sleepwalk through.

Leta see what happens Saturday. Still taking this team 1 game at a time.

I like what I see, but I liked what I saw after our first 2 conference games last year.

The first thing I did was to make sure Jamee Crockett has in fact finally graduated and not going to be in uniform anymore. Maybe he can launch another 3 pointer with 1 second left on the shot clock against Seton Hall? Lol

Revenge would be only a small part of the equation, but a bit of a factor. You don't want to see SHU come out with low energy not focused. It would be great if the fans show up and make it difficult on DePaul for once.

SHU has a great opportunity to have a nice season, A win here and you have just about hit a reset button to last year's start. This team plays better defense, rebounds and seems to have more cohesion as a unit.

11am is tough for fans too. But you have to think the WSU come back win, dominating USF and now dominating MU on the road will draw some casual fans to the game.

Hopefully oval students show up as well.

Def not a guarantee though.

Anyone plan on going to this game? I will likely be there. Unfortunately there is virtually nowhere to go for a beer that's halfway decent that's in close proximity to the campus.

I will be at the next 5 games including Prov on the road with the Booster Club. Looking forward.

80 exactly. If the five all stay and continue to evolve, we could have finally built a Louisville roster.

I was a little too brief on the previous comment (iPad's suck that way). When we look back at our rosters (say past ten years come to mind pretty readily), we might have mostly had a set of starters and a bench that was 8-10 deep (good enough to get into the game). What we never had was really more than 2-3 really outstanding players each in their own right. When I looked at DePaul last night, it was Billy Garrett Jr, that small fellow with the funny hair (maybe) and one young big guy (to develop). There's your three. Sure, Leitao can field 7-plus guys but it is generally not sustainable in "the big man's game" of the Big East. You can go one half against anyone if all your major horses are running like hell.

What we have is actually different. We have 5 (our starters make the grade - because everyone stepped up - especially Ish). And then you add Gordon - and then a supporting cast of Nzei and Singh (who continue to grow). And that puts us in territory that makes us actually capable of being dominant. Given that potential and a new-found maturity of our coach (he needed to change, he saw he had to change, he did more than try to change, he coached his own ass off to change, and did it in a big time game to win it, giving him the real feedback that this is the right direction), we've got something potentially really good - and if the recruiting keeps coming - then it becomes sustainable.

It is really hard to change - it is hard to adjust - it is hard to grow up. If the corner has been turned, we're in for times we had not imagined, given the last five years. Just win and get it done, see where we go, who knows, but it sure is a hell of a lot more fun.

I recall a thread I posted last Sunday entitled” We will know a lot about our team soon...” Looking back, I realize that I posted my thoughts prematurely; however, I believe my comments are more relevant now, especially after our dominating performance against Marquette. My prior posting follows:

Upcoming tough stretch of games; the results will obviously tell us a lot about this team:

at Villanova (#17) - Jan.6th
Creighton - Jan.9th
at Providence (#10) - Jan. 16th
Villanova (#17) - Jan. 20th
at Xavier (#8) - Jan.23rd

_______________________________________________________________

Could we go 4-1? I think we can.

Most likely 3-2? Looking at the teams this scenario has good chance.

Worst? 1-4! I certainly hope not.
________________________________________________________________

I see room for optimism because of improvements (some subtle) that I notice with this team, including:

    • designed play from out-of-bounds resulting in a (sometimes) easy basket;
    • improved team defense, especially pressuring the ball
    • improved passing from all players (sometimes, one pass too many and player should have shot the ball);
    • Delgado showing his last season’s ROY form with multiple double-doubles in recent games;
    • emergence of Desi (my MVP so far) as a force at the 3;
    • increased assists leading to better results; in fact, at times too much passing when an open shot should have been taken instead of that extra pass;
    • improved shot selection from most players;
    • better rebounding both ends resulting in more put-backs and fast-break points;
    • Willard more authoritative with players; improved “in-game” strategies; change game plan as on-court type of play dictates; he’s simply projects a better coaching presence on the court, etc.

      Thoughts or comments?

Very thoughtful post Blue.

Comment: I have never seen so many good forwards in a Seton Hall uniform at the same time. Underneath we are very strong.

But I do worry about defending the 3 point shot. Sometimes we're a bit slow to the shooter.

Blue- I hope you can come to Womens BB Sunday on January 24th. See pinned post above. Chuck G.

We have had a difficult start to our conference schedule the past several years. This is an opportunity to start 3-1. Obvs not a must win but if we want to get double digit conference wins, take care of business at home

I don't think we need to 4-1 or even 3-2 to maintain good position for a bid if we beat Depaul tomorrow. I think going 2-3 if we fight hard gives a signature win over a top 25 team, and keeps it so that we beat every team that the committee will say we "should beat", namely Marquette, Depaul, and Creighton. These are not "good" teams. So if we are a "good" team, we will find a way to win these games. That also puts us at 4-3 with a bunch of the harder games behind us. Going 3-2 would be amazing, and two top 25 wins would put is great standing half way through the schedule. It would also mean we have half of the wins needed in conference for a bid.

I don't know if I agree about all the "corner turning" you are pointing to though:

  • designed play from out-of-bounds resulting in a (sometimes) easy baskets;
Agreed
  • improved team defense, especially pressuring the ball
We got lazy for 10 minutes in the first half against Marquette, and I want to see this defense on display against good teams. If we put on a defensive clinic for Villanova, Xavier, Providence or Butler, than I'll be convinced.
  • improved passing from all players (sometimes, one too many and player should have shot the ball);
Eh. I think this is not on point. The team has a long way to go in this respect. Our assist to turnover ratios for the last 4 games: 17/20, 21/8, 11/17, 14/13. We are in the bottom quarter of all teams for turnovers (I believe from last Kenpom check). That isn't a team with good passing fundamentals and who takes care of the ball.
  • Delgado showing his last season’s ROY form with multiple double-doubles in recent games;
Double-edged sword. I'm glad he is doing better. His shooting and rebounding is about the same. Turnover percentage slightly higher. It would have been nicer if he got back in ROY form in the non-conference when we needed some better big play for our resume.
  • emergence of Desi (my MVP so far) as a force at the 3;
No doubt. He's posterized players. Plays hard on both ends. Gets the team and crowd into it. The kind of player that can put other teams on suicide watch.
  • increased assists leading to better results; in fact, at times too much passing when an open shot should have been taken instead of that extra pass;
Increased assists yes, but also increased turnovers. One step forward. One step back. The team as a whole has more turnovers this season than assists.
  • improved shot selection from most players;
A qualified statement. Makes it hard to agree or disagree. I really hope IW can develop a little more into a distributor. When DR, AD, and one other player start killing other teams, IW gets the chance to put on an NBA clinic, but I still see too many isolation drives into three men in the paint for a turnover. That isn't just IW either. KC and IW are equally to blame on that one. IW can be a beast on D, so this isn't meant to knock him.
  • better rebounding both ends resulting in more put-backs and fast-break points;
  • Willard more authoritative with players; improved “in-game” strategies; change game plan as on-court type of play dictates; he’s simply projects a better coaching presence on the court, etc.
Not sold yet. Every year we hear about "this year" being the year Willard develops. Way too early to say this has happened. You see this when we beat top 50 teams. That's where your coaching can make it a chess match. Let's go through the stretch above and then come back to it.

Why is 11 o'clock hard for fans to go to a game? I'm really not trying to draw straws here but it's consistent that are fans will have an issue with any game time or day. We really need to get a pep in our step and support the team. #section13

Why? Cause we love excuses. Get up, buy a coffee, get you ass to the game and you have 2 extra hours post game.

We are slow in the zone but with man to man, with: IW,IS,DG,KC and DR...the three won't be so easy for the other team.

But we should always be playing our best in every game regardless who the competition is and where we play. The motivation to win because of what they did last year should hopefully elevate our player(s) game and we play above our best.

If a player/coach feels they are not playing their best they should not be on the court and give the opportunity for another to step in.
