Only one team fro the SEC got in. Same for the ACC , PAC , etc Back then Kentucky was always loaded and wiped the floor in the SEC. Maybe there’s a reason they went from 32 teams to 64 and beyond. So only a few of the same teams always went and ended up with the very best players…… except the independents who stayed that way for a reason.!!!

The death of the NIT was when the NCAA allowed more than one team from each conference to get into their tournament, Prior to then the NIT would have the choice of the top independents & and teams not winning their conferences, The NCAA also encouraged (forced) schools to join conferences & not remain independent.

Which is the reason Dave Gavitt knew that a conference was imperative. Thank God for his friendship with Richie Regan. If we didn’t join the Big East not sure we would have survived and I don’t mean the basketball program, I mean the university.

I have seen each of the five players listed as the best college players ever. It is hard to evaluate players over different era's but I can not disagree with this list of of the top 5 players though the order might be different.

Wow if you saw them all live and in person that is quite astonishing. The list is absolutely right on. Walton was fabulous to watch with his all around game. His coach gave Lewis the nod as better because of the loss to NC State and David Thompson. You’re never going to see finals like that again.

How many points does gail goodrich score if he shot as often as pete? Jerry west? David Thompson? Pete was a better college player than ewing? Jerry lucas? Elvin hayes? Sidney wicks? All these guys were amazing talents who lead their teams to victory.

I always loved pete. I could make a layup by bouncing the ball off my head like pete did cause i thought it was cool. But i pick any of the guys i noted and a bet a few others over him.

Gary asked who the 3 Ms were...mount, murphy and maravich. Pete shot it 1000 times more than either of them.
