The death of the NIT was when the NCAA allowed more than one team from each conference to get into their tournament, Prior to then the NIT would have the choice of the top independents & and teams not winning their conferences, The NCAA also encouraged (forced) schools to join conferences & not remain independent.Only one team fro the SEC got in. Same for the ACC , PAC , etc Back then Kentucky was always loaded and wiped the floor in the SEC. Maybe there’s a reason they went from 32 teams to 64 and beyond. So only a few of the same teams always went and ended up with the very best players…… except the independents who stayed that way for a reason.!!!
