I tuned in to the duke Louisville game today and was listening while doing chores around my house and i thought I heard Vitale say something to the effect that the Louisville administration should have just written a large check to the NCAA instead of self imposing a postseason ban this year? If anyone else heard it was that really what he said?

I heard it. Perhaps he was suggesting that Louisville pay a fine or anything else that wouldn't punish the kids who are playing currently

I don't think he's too far off. You have to hold the administration (that term includes coaches) accountable, but I'd like to see them do so without also punishing kids on the team that had nothing to do with the transgressions. It robs them of their experience.

Excessive fines and significant future scholarship reductions do that.

I don't buy the whole argument don't punish the kids. They take advantage of everything and what they do do not make them any less responsible. When players accept things or what not they know it is against the rules and they still take them, they even go and say that's not enough I want more. I don't care what you say but these players are not innocent even if this didn't happen while they were there. You make the bed, you sleep in it. They get a free education, get treated liking kings, get special treatment and get gifts and money to go the that school. I don't feel sorry at all, especially schools like Louisville, Syracuse, etc

Well now you're talking about something completely different and that's basically the culture of the sport, which exists because everyone is scared of the boogie man, which is the truth.

To refer to major D1 basketball as "amateur" while the NCAA, universities, coaches, and everyone else reels in millions upon millions of dollars is a joke in its own right and leads to all this craziness anyway. Look at the disparity in facilities and perks schools provide their top revenue-generating sports compared to the rest of the student body, for example. It's pervasive.

And it makes sense; they generate resources other teams or organizations on campus do not. So let's just call it that instead of this guise.

Institutions don't act , it's individuals that act on behalf of the institution that cause the inappropriate or illegal activity that when discovered requires remedial action and appropriate sanctions. That to me means that the institution must be penalized, the individuals involved in the illegal activity must be penalized , the persons in the institution who's mandate is to oversee that no illegal activity takes place must be penalized AND any sport that benefitted from the illegal activity must be penalized. To me that means more then just cutting a check.

So cheating is punished with a fine! That would be terrible. How large a check shoul d they write? They earn $20 mill per yr from hoops. If they aren't good, they earn less.

It's like the banks with their regulation/litigation funds. Cheat and steal and when caught write a check from a percentage of the profits. But still keep a bunch of your profits.

And I'm tired of the sympathy for the kids. The kids who were having sex with the hookers should not have been a bit suspect about the ethics of the program?

Agree. It's not like Pitino didn't have a questionable reputation. Nobody put a gun to these kids to take the scholarship money and go there.
