Fight Over Florida School Masks Grows as Student Cases Surge — Bloomberg
Masks are the simplest, safest way to slow the spread among schoolchildren, said Lisa Gwynn, president of the Florida Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Cases “surging” in Florida schools.
Let’s break that down. 10,000 students on “stay at home” orders out of 380,000. That’s 2.6%. But what does that mean? 10,000 stay at home means there was a positive test, so if a student, or a teacher, or a student’s parent reports that the parent has Covid and potentially exposed a child and class, the class quarantines. So one case could conservatively impact 26 students having to stay at home? So if that was all student infections, maybe 0.1% of the 380,000 students have Covid?
And how many of those have cause hospitalization? Let’s be aggressive, let’s say 25%. So maybe 0.025% of students who are in Florida schools are hospitalized? And the death rate in hospitalizations is 2.5%. So let’s extrapolate again, 0.000625% deaths? Across 380,000 students, that would be 2 deaths. I would question the total deaths across that 380,000 student population from all causes and guess that 2 would be pretty far down the ranking of causes.
And that’s assuming that they only quarantined 26 for 1 case, not a whole class, a bus, a second class using a classroom. That’s assuming an extremely high hospitalization rate of 1-in-4. That’s assuming the 2.5% death rate on hospitalizations is the same for school age children.
Enough sensationalism. This is a pandemic of the media.
