WFAN’s Craig Carton arrested in $2M ticket fraud scheme
By Daniel Prendergast

September 6, 2017 | 8:02am | Updated

“Boomer and Carton” co-host Craig Carton was busted Wednesday morning by feds on fraud-related charges, sources said.

The 48-year-old sports jock was arrested at his home in Manhattan.

He and another man are accused of running a bogus discount ticket broker business and ripping off investors for a few million dollars, according to NBC New York.

The case is being handled by prosecutors in Manhattan federal court.

Carton is one half of the popular “Boomer and Carton” sports radio show on WFAN along with former Bengals quarterback Boomer Esiason. The show has been on air since 2007.

When you read about cases like this there is always one question that comes to mind and that is " Why someone in his position, making the money he's making would do something like this and the answer is " Greed ". Pure and simple.

Someone on the Rutgers board is relaying some report that Carton had something like $3 million in gambling debts.

That is what I read as well....

According to the complaint, Carton began this scheme in 2016, around the same time officials said he racked up about $3 million worth of gambling debts to casinos and other third parties.

Carton is accused of running a scam that involved ticket reselling in which he told investors he would purchase and resell large blocks of concert tickets for substantial profits.

Carton, according to the complaint, falsely claimed to investors that he and Meli had access to millions of dollars' worth of concert tickets at face value. Officials said the pair provided forged documents to investors that appeared to show agreements to buy tickets from venues and promoters to concerts by artists such as Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, Metallica, Adele and Barbra Streisand.

Carton and Meli are accused of using new investor funds to repay earlier investors and other debts, including gambling debts, rather than buy tickets for resale as promised. Together they misused at least $3.6 million from two investors, according to the complaint, and Carton is accused of misusing another $2 million from one of those same investors.

I generally find Boomer and Carton too juvenile to listen to. But when i have listened, Carton often sounds drunk on air and in promos. Drinking often goes with gambling. God help him and his family.

How stupid were these investors to buy into this . You know the old saying that applies here " If it's too good to be true, it probably isn't." Just like Madoff and other schemes where people think they're going to get profits greater then they can get elsewhere it just doesn't happen. Caveat Emptor!

I disagree with everyone above. I loved Boomer & Carton. Say what you want about Carton, but he was the best at his job in the country in the top market on he top show.

He was also AMAZING in his community of New Rochelle whether it was the elementary school or other charity events. Especially down in Monroe NJ for the hs kid who was paralyzed playing hockey few years back.

Either way I am shocked by this.

This is a cautionary tale, GAMBELING can destroy you.

I don't know anyone who actually enjoys that "show". I also found CC to have very little sports knowledge as well as being totally unfunny. Boomer I liked until recently. I hope wfan cuts ties with both of them now. But that's just me.

He's not named Soros, Buffet, Gates et.al., how did he manage to rack up that amount of gambling losses?

Spot on Jclaz show is fantastic and this is just unfortunate. Also Catholicman did you really just say he was drunk on air? Come on man. Well, maybe St Pats day and the always amazing Headliner day.

Gambling addiction does destroy many people, and the sad thing with this Ponzi scheme was he probably used the investors money to gamble thinking he could get out of the hole he created. That will probably never be mentioned because it would just add to additional charges besides the ponzi deception.

I can tell you cases like this were not unusual during the early part of my professional career and seeing the havoc and pain it caused the victims, their families and the families of those responsible for the fraud were difficult to see.

This story is just getting going. The other dude who was arrested is apparently the owner of a strip club in NY and Vegas called Sapphire. When you are involved with folks like that and gambling, you can bet there will be some organized crime connections of some sort. Whether he owes them or is involved with them or both.

Part of this is the generation gap thing. From my POV, he is a POS who is an awful listen, his attempts at humor are not funny, his mini-song parodies never clever, his attitude as a sports fan exactly what is wrong with fans. I loved Howard Stern, so I am not a total old fogey. Carton is not funny, smart, or a commentator on sports to whom I would pay attn. He even has that whiny voice. A-hole cubed to me.

Right. He has always been a lame version of a Howard Stern/Chris Russo wannabe. It comes off very insincere, forced, and corny most times. The only time it ever piqued my interest was his Francesa bashing.

And Jayson Williams was one of the most generous people who gave tons of money and time to the community when he lived in Hunterdon County. But he had an explosive temper when mixing alcohol and his gun collection. Any vice can destroy you.

YEAH BRO! HIGH FIVE! ::chest bump::

That NYDN article has one very big error. It says he makes $250k a year as morning host. Way more than that. Well into the 7 figures.

Reason to not put faith in hedge funds - the inexperienced dolts put in charge of them invest in ticket schemes...nevermind ticket schemes that don't even exist

The boomer and carton show is great. They are the #1 sports talk show for a reason.

I feel really bad for Craig and I'm sad to see the show come to an end.

The bottom line is problems like addiction or gambling do not know the difference between whether a person is successful or not. They can hit anyone. That's what happened here.

I listened occasionallly usually for short periods and never really enjoyed the show, but one thing I noticed is Carton always talking about gambling. Remember thinking this guy has gambling issues, but never in my mind did I think this level, sad for both him and more his family.

Boomer Esiason....

“Thank you to all our listeners, I want to thank you, thank you to the people in my life, thank you to all our sponsors that reached out to me yesterday. As you can imagine, my phone blew up as everybody was finding out what was going on and everybody read the complaint,” he said.

“It’s shocking, it’s shocking, but the people that reached out to me on Twitter, the people that reached out to me personally, the people sending emails and everything else … just blew me away, absolutely blew me away.”

The former Jets and Bengals quarterback vowed that the show will endure, despite his missing “point guard.”

“We’ll continue to do it and I’m gonna bring my friends here to find a permanent replacement — if, in fact, that’s where this is going to take us,” he said. “At the end of the day, we have four hours here at WFAN, a great place to work with great people. It was like a morgue around here yesterday.”

Carton is a rude jerk who needlessly mocked and insulted my sister-in-law in 2005 .
I used to listen to NJ 101.5 occasionally and Carton got on my nerves. I just never liked him - he was trying too hard to be controversial and I just thought he was a jerk. Then he said this about Mrs. Codey:

“What Governor Codey ought to do is approve the use of medical marijuana so women can have a joint and relax instead of putting their babies in a microwave,” Carton said, according to The Star-Ledger.

“Women who claim they suffer from this postpartum depression . . . must be crazy in the first place.”

Again he was trying to be funny but the background story on Mrs. Codey is she had come out early in the process to discuss post-partem depression and I applaud her for doing that. It was not a well-know issue and there was a lot of stigma about it. Thankfully we are learning more about it. And then Carton doubled down and said some more stupid stuff trying to be tough and Gov Codey at the time took him to task which he should have (and note I am not a Codey fan).

When that happened I knew Carton was a total ass and the few times I listened to him on Boomer and Carton I only lasted about 10-15 minutes at most because he is simply a dbag in my estimation. So some say haters gonna hate. Well Carton was the hater first, remember that.

I take no solace in watching his downfall but karma is a bitch sometimes.

Typical Boomer...says a lot and absolutely nothing at the same time.

LOL

To be fair, what else could he say in that spot though? It's all empty. All you can do is express appreciation to the fans and those who reach out.

Agree...came across as a jerk, and low and behold, he was. Actually, thought Boomer was okay and not always the politically correct athlete....spoke up about Kaepernick.

Carton’s do-nothing charity may have been tool for Ponzi scheme
By Bruce Golding

September 7, 2017 | 8:08pm | Updated

Internal Revenue Service records show the Tic Toc Stop non-profit has raised more than $1 million since Carton — who was suspended from his sports-talk radio job following his arrest Wednesday — founded it in 2013 to “fight against Tourette Syndrome.”

Carton and two of his four kids suffer from the condition.

But nearly all the cash raised has been spent on something other than Tourette syndrome, including a series of golf outings, galas and other fund-raising events.

Indeed, photos posted on the charity’s Web site show Carton palling around with retired pro athletes including Mets reliever John Franco, Yankees catcher Rick Cerone and Knicks guard John Starks at one of the big-bucks fund-raisers.

In its IRS filings, Tic Top Stop lists two unexplained “contributions” totaling $103,390 made in 2013-’14. Even if that entire amount went to treatment or research that would account for less than 10 percent of what the charity has taken in, the filings reveal.

An expert with the Charity Navigator watchdog group said the lack of any “program expenses” in its most recent, 2015 filing raised a “major red flag.”

“We rarely ever see organizations report zero for program expenses,” Katie Rusnock said.

“We occasionally see low ratios, but this is definitely far outside the norm.”

Earlier this year, Tic Top Stop’s fourth annual celebrity golf outing was co-chaired by board member Doug Pardon, who The Post has identified as the “hedge fund partner” Carton targeted to allegedly scam $4.6 million from Brigade Capital Management.

Carton and two alleged accomplices are accused of creating a sham ticket-reselling operation to defraud the fund and an unidentified “individual investor” to help Carton pay off around $3 million in gambling debts.

Part of the scheme allegedly involved the use of phony documents detailing an agreement for Carton to purchase $2 million worth of seats to shows by Barbra Streisand and Metallica at face value, directly from the venue at which both acts were scheduled to perform.

The only place to have hosted both Streisand and Metallica this year is the Nassau Coliseum, which is owned by Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov’s Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment. That company is also listed on Tic Tic Stop’s web site as a supporter.

Although Carton didn’t use any of the hedge fund’s $2 million to buy tickets, court papers say he later tried to cover his tracks by using his personal credit card to buy around $345,000 worth of Streisand tickets and $16,000 worth of Metallica tickets directly from the venue.

Carton — who’s not a licensed ticket reseller, according to the Department of State — also allegedly bought another $500,000 worth of tickets to a second Streisand show at a different venue.

The only other place Babs performed this year was the Barclays Arena, which is also owned by Brooklyn Sports. Neither Brooklyn Sports, Carton’s defense lawyer nor Tic Toc Stop’s chief financial officer, Steve Kent, returned requests for comment.
