Dr. Fauci Recommends Goggle's or Face Shield

Nope. It was in April. She said the virus would spike and then fade away. That was wrong.

That lead the wh to play politics with this assuming it would only be the blue states that were hit instead of developing a nationwide plan.

It didn’t need to spike again. It only did because we let it.

Except it never spiked earlier in the areas where it is spreading now. You are fake news.

I agree Trump shouldn’t have been pushing it, but I believe in his warped mind he was trying to give people hope.

By the same token, just because someone hates Trump or what he stands for doesn’t totally dismiss something he says. I have no issue with Fauci, but it seems there are few things I have read that show some positives with the drug, so hopefully more studies are still going on, I guess one issues were some dangerous side effects which might be hard to overcome especially since there are now some other treatments.

Honestly, I have been watching the news about the drug pretty closely as that is the drug my wife takes for her autoimmune disease.

My biggest concern about the virus personally was how her immune system would respond if she got it. I have been hopeful that the drug would be effective.

Her doctor called a few months ago (I forget exactly when, days are all mixed up now) to make sure she had enough... so yeah, having the president promote a drug that was not proven to be effective which was then causing concern about if my wife would have enough of the drug just because people were apparently filling prescriptions “just in case” maybe did piss me off a little more than most people. It’s one thing if it is effective and saving people... it’s another if it’s just sitting on their shelves.

I would be thrilled if the drug ends up being effective as it would lower the amount I personally need to worry about Covid. I just have no issue with someone like Fauci waiting to be convinced before he promotes its use.

hmmm... just like in Italy where there was a huge spike in Northern Italy, and then a lull and another large spike in central and southern Italy because it just had to work it’s way through other population centers?

Oh that didn’t happen? Because you are just making stuff up?

Other countries managed to shut it down without the virus working its way through other parts of the country. No need to make up excuses why we couldn’t do the same here.

Sorry about your wife’s condition, But this is unconscionable if physicians are writing prescriptions for people to stock up like this “just in case” like you said.

Had dinner with someone who has extended family in Australia and conversations went to COVID. I knew Australia had excellent results but didn’t realize how good...only 200 fatalities. They told us that Australia success is based on aggressive containment, with tight restrictions coming into the country and also between regions. Focus on rigid containment.

The argument can be made that they are an island continent, but so what? It shows containment is the most effective strategy.

Agree, but that was her doctors concern and was apparently happening with a large spike in prescriptions written for the drug.

Right. There are obviously bigger challenges to a country like the US, but I’m not buying that this virus just needs to hit 20% of an area and then will burn out.
Many countries proved you can contain the virus.

Once you let the virus in, it’s virtually impossible to prevent the spread...you can slow it, but everything I’ve read, spread/burnout is inevitable.

The doctors concerns may be or not be valid on hydroxychloiquine. We have the ability to limit/ration in our supply chain in a dime. This happens quite often when demand outstrips supply (in the past for instance with some flu vaccines). Not saying it might happen in isolated cases, but widespread prescribing and hoarding would be difficult to pull off.

Right, some kind of burnout would be inevitable where it spreads, but it doesn’t have to spread everywhere in order to burnout.

Again, using Florida as an example. Once they started to see the positive rate increase, It was clear the virus was spreading and they should have taken additional steps to stop the spread. That was the middle of June.

Looking at Italy, it is clear the virus does not need to hit 20% in population centers to burn out.

Yeah, just looked it up. Apparently Rx orders for Hydroxychloroquine went up 2000% the last week of March from the normal volume. No idea about the supply chain there and if/when that would become a problem.

It was always going to keep spreading in Florida and elsewhere. Managing the rate of spread is important at this point to maintain hospital capacity. Spread is inevitable though.

"For herd immunity, if indeed we have a very large proportion of the population already being immune in one way or another, through these cellular responses, they can count towards the pool that you need to establish herd immunity. If you have 50% already in a way immune, because of these existing immune responses, then you don't need 60 to 80%, you need 10 to 30% -- you have covered the 50% already. The implications of having some pre-existing immunity suggests that maybe you need a small proportion of the population to be impacted before the epidemic wave dies out," said Dr. John Ioannidis, a professor of medicine and epidemiology and population health at Stanford University.

Right. I understand the concept of herd immunity, but we appear to be talking about 2 different things.

Herd immunity would cause the virus to burn out. I don’t disagree with that. What percentage we would need to get there is certainly not settled. I don’t agree 50% are already immune (or close to it). It wouldn’t have spread as rapidly as it did of that were the case.

But... as far as getting the virus to burn out there is another option which is lowering the r0 value by changing our behavior. We do not need her immunity for the virus to burn out. Other countries managed to get there by changing behaviors.
