They'd be treated better if they were illegals. Even the ubiquitous NYShore Guy has ignored them.

This is becoming our Chernobyl. Smaller scale but the optics of the twisted rail cars and the drifting smoke are eerie.

1) AOC said she supported East Palestine until she realized it was in the U.S.

2) Buttigieg will speak out about the terrible tragedy once he finds the racism in it.

GOP gov...so feds DC should intervine because it is a catch 22 scenario...trump admin loosened measures no?

lol, that is pretty good.

This has been a really odd story to watch honestly though. The reporting on it initially was very quiet and it was hard to get any actual information. I'm glad it's getting attention now, but the politicization while predictable is still pretty gross.

Seems like the the reporting was just quiet because both sides were figuring out how to blame the other side for what happened.

NY Times making the Chernobyl comparison:

It’s behind a paywall so maybe you didn’t read it, but the story is about the “wild speculation” surrounding the event and the writer does not seem to share the view on the comparisons made by others to Chernobyl.

Smaller scale

I'll stand by that.

It would be wild speculation to equate the two.

Like Love Canal and others, we won't know the impact for years.

But thank you for clarifying the article.

We need another 1.7 trillion to fix the train tracks.

Sad article that shows how pathetic our journalists have become. Guy downplays the whole incident, even goes so far as to say without any research that the fish are already repopulating. The article is an insult to most people’s intelligence. Are we so blind we cannot read between the lines. Who amongst us wants to drink the water in East Palestine, send our kids off to school nothing to see here. Good God anyone with a logical thought process can see that these train derailments are a serious issue. Look at the footage of the tracks, last time someone worked on the them was when pioneers went out west.

The article was a hit piece on Conservative media and Twitter rather than the issue at hand, glossing over what is a serious accident with unknown future consequences. Ironic that he calls out that pillar of journalism, Chris Cuomo at the end.

Where are the champions of the environment, the green new deal climate protectors. Keep quiet and we can all go back to normal except of course the people of East Palestine. Bunch of Hippocrates. Everything is political, makes me sick to think we cannot get both parties to come together and address this rail problem and help these people.

He was citing the EPA's response there.

It is without question a serious issue, and there are still a lot of unanswered questions - but the authors point in that piece is that the accurate information is being muddied by media sensationalism.

On the other hand, this is obviously a travesty and somehow you feel the need to want to find blame on the people who believe in protecting the environment? Why are you making this political?

The governor said the air and water are fine and does not want to declare a disaster which would then trigger federal resources to come in and help. Not sure why that is yet. This seems like the type of disaster you would want all ands on deck for.

DeWine is a big disappointment. These politicians who claim all is well but don't show at the site are disgraceful. Obama said the Flint water supply was safe and then took a tiny sip to prove it. Republican or Democrat, makes no difference apparently, we are electing losers and sadly, re-electing them. We get what we deserve. If I were a resident of East Palestine, I would get my family out of that town if we had to walk.

I think the flaw in your view is shown in your last sentence. Both parties do not want to work together. Both parties do not care about helping people. The only things both parties care about is increasing their power, influence and wealth. In 2023, government exists to enrich itself, not to help people.

You think a train derailment is political? Lol, I almost feel bad for you. The Ukrainian flag is a nice touch too.

Merge think about what you are saying, of course i expect the people who are suppose to be good stewards of the environment to be the loudest when the environment is being destroyed. They are no where to be found, no comment when they should be speaking out and showing leadership. The optics of the big dark cloud and dead animals should disturb all of us. Images of the old train rails with the train barely able to stay on course transporting hazardous chemicals is crazy. We have elected a ship of fools to run our country.

I wonder would much he and his boss were paid for the article. I guess he was swimming after the incident and saw the fish re- populating. So stupid it’s actually funny. I’m suppose to take this guy seriously.

But they are not arguing against accidents occurring. They are arguing against continuing to burn fossil fuels without regard for the impact on our planet. This train derailment really has nothing to do with the climate change debate. Those wanting to hear from them are just trying to put a political spin on a disaster.

Yes, it looked horrible.
We probably should rethink private ownership of rails and trains. If it’s not cost effective enough to transport hazardous materials safely then the government needs to step in.

Like they run the VA hospitals…lol

Private ownership with government oversight. Maybe less time on woke policies and more investment in inspections and enforcement might work better…

Outside of blaming Trump has Mayor Pete even been to Palestine yet?

Ok big black clouds of chemicals have nothing to do with climate change only burning fossil fuels, got it my mistake. If you are for protecting the environment….you should be doing just that.

I agree with you here.

We are intentionally choosing to burn fossil fuels and are active in our choice to not be more aggressive in alternative energy. We are not intentionally choosing to have train accidents.

They are protesting against our choices. You're just trying to make this political. As if AOC showed up there you wouldn't be saying "oh please, now we have to listen to this idiot."

No if she showed up, I would have a level of respect for her. She’s not smart enough to show up. It would take a real leader to show up and stand for something. Did we not make choices to spend money all over the world and not repair our rail lines. Train derailment accidents are happening every day. When accidents happen daily they are not accidents anymore they are intentional problems.

Just watched Meet The Press and Face The Nation. Not one mention of derailment, but 15 minutes of Bernie plugging his new book. smh

Mayor Pete says it is Trump’s fault. This is Biden administration go to when anything goes bad and government is blamed for it.Pete is a joke so it figures he is future presidential nominee.

NYShoreGuy didn't think, he just found something on the Twitter.

He didn't mention that Memphis and Minneapolis are democratic cities when they had police problems.

Plus he's not registered to either political party.

Preliminary reports are pointing to a wheel bearing failure.

All that is left is to figure out a way to link Trump to wheel bearing maintenance.
