I'm stepping down from Onward Setonia on April 7th- THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!!

At least in St. John's case, one billionaire will cry himself to sleep tonight but he'll wake up wealthy and ready to do it again. Imagine bleeding our fanbase to pull in that much, just to exit that quickly? Probably would feel just as devastating as this season has.
It’s all a grift with the fans.

But if you are asking me would I rather contribute, see 30 wins, a league title, a tourney title, and a second round loss, or contribute and go 2-18 in the league with 7 wins overall? I think that’s a pretty easy one because at least I got to experience all the fun of the first 4 months.

Fair, but there is a colossal difference between what our fans contributed and got in return this season and what our base would have to contribute to get the one STJ just had.

Losing $100 from your wallet is a lot different feeling than losing $100k from your bank account. No matter how much fun you had that day, one feels much worse and has far bigger consequences.

I’m assuming anyone nuts enough to donate $100K from their own pocket to this is rich beyond even “normal rich”. Drop in the bucket type stuff. The grass roots stuff - the $100, $500, $1000, several thousand — is the type I’m talking about.

The sell on here to most is “contribute” amounts like those individually or in the aggregate, maybe slightly higher. And if people do so, and we have a season where we win 30 games, the league title and the tourney title, those pushing NIL will tell you it is absolutely worth it. They have to. Because no one can guarantee even a winning season in this world. Look at how many NIL rich teams didn’t even make the dance?

There is also a colossal difference in what our administration does in regards to NIL and what just about every other power conference school is doing as well!

Last year in May Mike got a donation from this board of $107K. His initial goal was $25K.

That's an amazing number and a credit to his hard work.
Which is pretty remarkable from a grass root fan, who was able to do this without the support of the school. Kudos to him.

It also goes back to the points I raised above though. If those who donate to NIL at a school should "light their money on fire" if that school wins 30+ games, multiple titles, and loses in the second round of the dance, what the hell does it mean if you are a fan who was part of donating the $107,000 listed above only to have us win 7 games and not get to enjoy anything this season? What is the standard by which the NIL donation is worth it?

Not sure you can look at it this way. Unfortunately, there is no choice but to donate, whether we stink again or even if there is dramatic improvement (which I hope there is). I hate the whole thing, personally, and haven't been as liquid as I'd like given my family situation, but win or lose, it feels grotesque.

I think that’s what some think for sure. But there were comments yesterday that seemed to imply the opposite. Unless that was just one of those illogical “angels dancing on the head of a pin” type things.

There certainly are pinheads. You can't complain about lack of NIL and scream when ticket prices/donation levels go up. You can't say we have no plan or creativity and then ignore a raffle for sweet 16 VIP package at the Rock.

I mean in another thread someone posted that donating NIL to a team that set school records for wins and won league/tourney titles wasn’t worth it. So if that’s not worth it, how can this be justified? I think it’s all a grift anyway when it comes to the fans - not legit NIL opportunities of course - but the opinion seems to be if you don’t win a national championship it’s pointless, in which case I don’t see why anyone would donate because how can there been be guaranteed.
What are we talking about national championships for? We won 7 games. When we won the NIT last year vibes were high and donations were flowing in. We have a small fan base, lack a whale to take NIL on their back and have an administration that’s incapable of leading and picking up the slack of the fan base. Losing leads to apathy. Yes, you’d like donations to come in even heavier after a year like we had to help turn it around. But when there’s no change or anything to get excited about, you’re going to have to do it the hard way.

If you build it, they will come. Same in pro sports - relatively small number of diehards and fans hop on the bandwagon when the team starts to get good. Rising tide floats all boats
