I would have found a way. The coach has been consistently F'd by injuries to key players. Those are not excuses. They are facts. Talking about them and your plans for the future can rally the troops.
Communication is so important. I have found over the years that when you supervise people, the more you explain yourself when possible, the more people understand and support you. People like to feel included.
Keeping supporters unnecessarily in the dark or being non-communicative is deadly. This also applies in all personal relationships.
