Frontcourt Help

Legit question about Mbaye. Some have said he was a walk on last season. Then I saw something that said he was a red shirt freshman. I don't think you red shirt a walk-on. So where in lies the truth. Was he on the roster last year as a walk on or a scholarship player that was red shirted? So is he on the roster with a "ship" and now has 4 years of eligibility?

Anyone with insight on this? Might be very important roster question.

Also DelGado I think was listed at 6'10" when he was here. Sure looks at least 2 inches shorter than Grant who was listed as a legit 6'10".

Walk-ons certainly redshirt as Mbaye did last season.

Really? Why would it be a thing since they are only walk ons? What would be the point of it?
Walk on or scholarship player you’re still on the team. Your label is irrelevant. If you’re on the roster a year of eligibility will be counted unless you red shirt or medical waivers

Maybe but he was then one of those many SHU players who would play bigger than he was. He competed against much bigger guys and thrived here.
We'll certainly need that type this year with only 2 bigs on the roster plus our 7-foot experimental project. 🤣

Walk ons can definitely red shirt, they are still members of team and have same eligibility requirements. Gives them another year to practice with team and develop.

Happens more in D1 college football then basketball since football needs more players plus for both practice & games, plus a lot less teams in football then basketball. More often a walk on in football vs basketball may earn scholarship down road as kid matures physically.

You seek a red shirt AFTER the season because you did not play the minimum number of games to burn that year of eligibility either due to injury or coach playing time decisions.

You don’t declare a red shirt in advance. A team can say a player needs another year of development so we will not burn his eligibility.

Huh? Many, many redshirts have been declared at many schools before the season starts...for the same developmental reason.

Lots of insightful info on redshirts that I did not know. I guess in this new age of college BB it is good stuff to know. I read they even have transfer rules for redshirt players. OMG.

Officially you cannot seek/be granted a redshirt from NCAA until after the season, but often decided between family and coaching staff that plan is to redshirt first season. Sometimes circumstances change, kid plays and no redshirt, but often redshirts are planned in advance, this is much more prevalent in college football then basketball due to roster sizes.

Correct, you don’t have to declare a red shirt season. You can plan one like Nova did with Donte D and others.

Two examples within our own program which ended up going in different ways.

We planned to redshirt Aaron Geramipoor as a freshman as he was not ready to play D-I basketball. We ended up burning that redshirt mid-season as he was needed. He played 16 games and fewer than 100 minutes that year. While Aaron was no star while he was here, he certainly would have been more productive in his fifth year than he was his first.

We had the same plan with Ro Gill when he moved from the JUCO ranks -- again -- he was in no way ready to play D-I high-major basketball. We were able to stick with that plan and received solid production from Ro in his fifth year.

I say a novena and check the board every day to see if we landed a 6’9” forward/center from anywhere. My prayers are still not answered.
You may need to go on a Muslim pilgrimage too and also spend time in a synagogue. You have to try everything. I think I left out some others you can try! Don't stop praying or giving up hope!
