Game Thread: Seton Hall vs. Rutgers

5-6 in non conference with maybe the worst loss of any power conference team to Monmouth. Punctuated by gifting a game to Rutgers that we were in control of.

This is lower than anything we’ve seen since Gonzo at least. Just sad.

Good job by the coach and staff having the team play their hearts out. Did not expect that result. Having said that the last part of game wasn't handled well. The offense has zero structure. Watching some of those offensive sets was difficult. Bull rushing is ridiculous. Thankfully, Coleman stepped up. A for effort today for sure.

Up 10 and we get another embarrassing loss. Sorry but at this point we just need to concentrate on next season because this season is already over.

There are no moral victories. Not today. The opportunity of the year slipped out of their hands.

Credit to Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey. Harper especially. He is as good as anyone in the country.

All this talk about defense and we leave a future #1 pick open. Cmon sha

I don't have a problem with putting Dual on Harper. Dual is good enough of a defender and long enough to give Harper resistance. The Coach is supposed to put the players in a position to win, and at some point, it is up to the players to execute and Dual did not.

So, I am critical of Dual on the last play, but you cannot pin the loss entirely on him. He was kept out for too long by Sha as was Middleton. Unfair over the top criticism of Dual is not warranted. They lost for many reasons. They all deserve blame. Coleman left his man when the Hall when up by one around 3 minutes. Wusu, bull rushing? Sha wants guys to play positions they should not be playing.

Good teams execute and win the close games bad teams do not and we’re not a good team.
Agree with this. Worth mentioning incredible poise by Coleman and knock down 4 straight FT’s right in front of the student section. Him Chaunce seem to be the only guys built for pressure on this team.

Zero moral victories. This was the most frustrating game of the season to watch. They gifted us 20+ points, at least.

Harper and Bailey are superlative talents and were easily the 2 best players on the floor.

That said, they are teenagers. They have a "pro" or "NBA" offensive game right now, but so much of it comes off them individually beating their defender. If Rutgers had a supporting case those two would be lethal, especially Harper, as they learn to make others better in a college offensive scheme. Right now, they take all kinds of difficult shots (and granted they can make some), but it is also easier to "scheme" them out of a game, kind of like what we did to Ace in the second half. You trap off the PNR or help when they are in isolation, and it forces them to make a tough contested play because RU doesn't have the ammunition around them and they aren't able (yet) to elevate those around them.

And I don't know what the hell Dual was doing on that last play.

Some of the kids played hard, but I'm not giving bonus points to that given they are paid to do so and given this is probably the most "charged" atmosphere the kids are going to play in all year.

All in all, this was so god damn frustrating to watch as a fan. At least we covered.

Agreed to an extent—- no idea what Dual was doing there.

But no pressure on the inbounder no extra pressure on Harper.

Those are shas decisions that didn’t work out

imo that is nuts. we showed progress. two top ten draft choices had great games and we lost at the buzzer
Agree with you that I still much preferred playing them close to getting our doors blown off. Even if the ending hurt more that way.

I'm not sure how much progress was made. The two kids are great talents, but unless that supporting cast progresses, that isn't a very good team or even a good team right now. It's why their record is what it is. They were giving this game to us for so long with all the missed FTs, TOs, disjointed play and lack of presence in the paint.

Annoying to lose but looking at the ridiculous free throw discrepancy and them having 2 $1M+ players, if you told me we'd go into the last possession tied in that scenario I wouldn't have believed you.

This was a truly fugly game. SHU plays like many of Pike's previous teams. RU's horrid foul shooting kept the game closer than it should have been.

Rivalry game. Team that is relying so heavily on 2 kids playing their 10th games of high major college basketball. Questionable supporting case. I wasn't shocked it was close and bet us to cover for a lesser margin than the points we were getting at tip.

I would have been shocked if there wasn't a big FT discrepancy in this game. Rutgers is home. We are what we are offensively. And Harper and Bailey are going to draw fouls against a team like us so long as they attack the paint. They had 15 attempts between them and frankly I thought RU played right into our hands in the first half with Harper not attacking the paint. Pike clearly told him to start doing that after the break based on how he played in the second half. It's probably going to be a running theme all season with them because both Ace and him already have some of the NBA elements to their game with the step backs and contested jumpers, but they are talented enough where they can make some and it will be a major part of their game at the next level, so I don't see it stopping.

That shot by Harper wasn’t why we lost. We handed them the keys after being up 10 and let them lock us up as we took bad shots
