Seton Hall’s personnel was lacking depth in the frontcourt, but Myles Carter’s choice to play for the Pirates helped to change that. His physicality and energy off the bench could be vital for The Hall this season.
Seton Hall has only recruited two high school players from Chicago since 2007. The first was Jerron Wilbut in 2013 who was arrested for robbery before he played a game. Myles Carter is the second and can provide the Pirates with much-needed help in the paint.
Many top recruits from Illinois, especially Chicago, either choose to stay home and play for DePaul or select one of the top programs in the country. For example, Jabari Parker and Jahlil Okafor were stars in the Windy City and went on to have success at Duke.
Carter is not as talented, but is certainly a Chicago star and decided to go in a different direction.
In Chicago, Carter went to St. Rita’s of Cascia High School and played for Gary DeCesare. Last season, Carter led St. Rita’s to a 26-4 record and a spot in the Chicago Class 4A sectional championship game.
As a senior, the forward averaged 8.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.0 blocked shots a game, which led Carter to being named to the All-Catholic League South Section team. Carter was also an All-News-Gazette Special Mention and a top-20 player from Illinois according to numerous services that cover recruiting.
Former NFL wide receiver Tai Streets was Carter’s AAU head coach for the Chicago MeanStreets where he gained skills and experience while playing for a talented team.
Carter had interest from multiple schools including Memphis, DePaul, Providence and VCU. Despite having an offer from the hometown Blue Demons, Carter decided to play for Seton Hall and told the Chicago Tribune that he would have picked Seton Hall even if Oliver Purnell had stayed on as head coach.
After he chose South Orange, Carter told the Chicago Tribune, "Coach (Kevin) Willard was telling me they want me to be an impact player from the start."
It is clear that the Pirates needed him after losing Brandon Mobley to graduation. That left Angel Delgado as the only talented frontcourt piece on the roster. The blue and white needed help in the paint and that is where Carter shines.
Carter is a developed 6-foot-9, 230-pound power forward who is known more for his defensive prowess than scoring. The freshman protects the rim at a high level and can run the floor better than most big men at his size.
Head coach Kevin Willard told SHU Athletics that Carter "is a high-energy and talented big man with tremendous upside" who is prepared for the Big East due to his experience with the top teams he played with in high school.
The Pirates are getting a player who can battle down low with his strength and length. Carter’s body is built for the Big East and that overall length that he has will make it difficult on guards who will look to drive on Seton Hall. With the Pirates trying to find stability in the frontcourt, expect their freshman to be a huge part of the defense right away.
Carter does have some parts of his game that need improvement, in fact, he told the Chicago Tribune about it.
The forward said, "I've got to be prepared. I've got to work on my post game and free throws and running more to get accustomed to what it's going to be like."
Offense is the biggest hole in Carter’s game and if he can find a way to develop his scoring ability that would be a huge plus for The Hall. We all know that Delgado struggles with free throws and Carter acknowledged that he does too. The Pirates are going to be feeding both players on the offensive end and if they draw contact they will need to make opponents pay at the charity stripe. Carter must show some progress at the free throw line.
One concerning thing that Carter said about his improvement involved running more. Carter’s conditioning cannot be a question mark this season for the Pirates. Seton Hall must have the forward develop his stamina so that he becomes a player that can battle in the paint during the majority of games. Carter has had time to build up his endurance and it will hopefully not be an issue for a team that looked out of gas at the end of last season.
With the additions of Carter, Braeden Anderson and Michael Nzei, the Pirates have a front line that can compete with the rest of the big men in the conference. The recruitment of Carter was huge for Seton Hall and he could be an important player on the roster before the season is said and done.
