Good stuff from Jerry

“Right now we’re working with our coaches to figure out what the best use of that position is,” Felt said. “Is the next thing the general manager? It’s certainly the sexy thing; everybody is hiring one. I’m not saying we’re not doing it – I know what we do need; we need someone who can help with these negotiations and also can help when it comes to salary cap management.”

Don’t like the sound of this at all.

There were other things that the Hall is doing that will eventually come to light regarding funding. For the first time in quite a while things are looking up.

This past season left a bad taste in everyone's mouth. That will no longer be the case.

Hang on for a MUCH better season next year.

Personally I don’t think there’s enough ‘meat on the bones “ to form a sound opinion on our hiring a General Manager and what resources will he or she have to be successful . I’ll wait till they make a decision on whether we’ll do the fashionable thing and hire one and then we can see if that’was the right move .

Many duties that Holloway was doing will now be assigned to this new position. The individual will not have the title GM, but he will be performing many of the same duties freeing Sha to focus on player procurement.

Please guys stop focusing on the negatives. Jerry was incredibly positive about the Hall's direction. But he can't incorporate that in his story as he has to maintain his professionalism.

We are FINALLY on the right track.

BTW - I read that Deloitte-run NIL clearinghouse is new enforcement entity tasked with overseeing third-party NIL deals for college athletes. It's primary purpose is to evaluate NIL agreements between athletes and boosters or affiliated entities to determine if they represent legitimate business transactions or are disguised "pay for play" arrangements.

I think this could be game changer for us. If this Deloitte-run clearinghouse is as difficult as the D&T auditors i deal with on regular basis (D&T is way more difficult than the other audit firms i have dealt with), we are going to be in good shape. My biggest fear was that the big boys will still have their collectives, and the revenue sharing advantage the big east has would be dwarfed by all the collectives the big boys have. This clearing house can hopefully solve this issue.

As a result, if we can get our funding close to the mid to top of Big East, we are going to be in really good shape. And as the SEC proved this year, even if you beat yourself up during the conference season, you can still make the tournament.

SHU will be in the middle of the Big East pack next season. But beyond maybe we will slowly ease up the ladder.

Next season SJU and Nova will spend the most with Creighton, UConn and Georgetown not far behind.

My guess is we'll be high up in the next grouping.

Frankly, Dan, we've heard it all before and many times. Proof is in the pudding as they say. I'll believe it when I see it, and that means wins & trophies.

No problem with the doubters. Especially after this past season. But hires are being made that will affect next season and funding is going to get much better.

I know some things not publicly known right now and for the first time in awhile I am happy with our direction.

I spoke to Mike McBride when he was first hired and I loved his ideas, But in the back of my mind despite his assurances I wondered if he has the cache to implement those ideas.

Turned out he didn't.

Now we have a better direction and for those that want proof I have no problem. Obviously we'll have to wait, but for starters as I posted on the Trove without naming the player we have a very good young man coming in next season. I have no idea when It will be announced.

Thanks . The facility is incredible and as Sha said " hall will be back on top"

No Marquette? Xavier?

In all seriousness, how can you or anyone else know exactly what other teams have or don't have with all the misinformation out there?

We’ll never know for sure but there’s certainly enough circumstantial information to piece together the landscape, from how/who these teams recruit where you can see enough to know who’s at the high end, competitive, and then Seton Hall. You can tell the same from the general operation of the program with marketing, social media, attendance, you name it. And sure you’ll have some high spending teams that bomb out too, but for the most part money = success.

There were many threads throughout the season where the only benefit of the doubt could be that we have people in place, but their hands have been tied and now they won’t be after this embarrassment. It seems farfetched to be that disconnected, but Seton Hall does set new standards for dysfunction operationally. 🙃

So that’s what they’re selling. We’ll see. I’m rooting for it!

Throwing more money at a bad situation is rarely the success people think it will be.

I have no faith that whoever, or whatever position we implement will be any different than Mike McBride.

We are a bottom feeder in this landscape. The better players will go to the places with most money and then to the places with success. We will still have a tough time convincing players to come and stay. All this effort to maybe be middle of the pack in the conference isn’t worth it.

Being 5th or 6th place in the Big East is an NIT team nowadays.

Maybe someone doesn’t want a “GM” and wants the title to be more subordinate. That’s my hunch. Just a hunch.

That is great to hear. But frankly I need to see it come to fruition before I buy into it. Too much recent underperformance administratively and athletically.

At this point, how many schools have a GM? It’s the step in the whole NIL game, but it’s not like SHU is an outlier today for not yet having one.
I don't care whether we have a GM. I care that the guys responsible for making a plan are still "working with the coach" to figure out what to do. It's April, fellas. Our season ended in December.

In most cases, the general manager is member of the head coach's staff. The pro sports model comparison isn't really apt here, at least in terms of hierarchy.

One notable exception, and it was in football was Stanford football GM Andrew Luck firing the head football coach. That's an outlier, though.

By the time the funding comes to light, recruiting will be over. Looking forward to a 10 win season and a shot at 8th place.

Funding, GM, right direction, stay positive, whatever, it starts with players. Get players. I’m being asked to renew 7 season tickets at a nice donation level and we have no players. Get people that can get on the floor and play basketball. The rest is media/promo speak.

From Jerry’s article, it’d be interesting to know who was holding them back and why. Which people. And what’s their thinking now?

Actually we have one. Just no announcement yet.

After reading this article I have a question concerning what is NIL and what is revenue sharing.

It mentions that donors can now make their contributions directly to Pirates Blue tax free due to the change in revenue sharing, because now the school can direct money to the students.

That is NOT revenue sharing to me. That is still fans funding the players. Seton Hall needs to contribute $3-4M of “their own” money, while NIL contributions from the fan base supplement that number.

If we intend to be closer to $3-4m total, then we will once again be on the bottom side of the scale.

Players are commanding $2m+ in the portal. With that inflation we may be lucky to get two starting level players, from established high D1 programs. Everything else would be throwing darts hoping players can step up from low and mid majors.

Please someone correct me if I am completely off base.

Lots of positives but I would agree the GM limbo talk is disturbing.

If we already have someone doing that role and we made upgrades in that dept, why not say it? Instead he says we are still talking about it and it’s the sexy thing to do? The sexy thing to do is not to have the worst team in decades and not be five steps slow when many good teams seemingly have a leg up on us. IMHO that was a crappy comment by Felt. Also to highlight that rev sharing WON’T give us a leg us and that we will never beat the big boys in funding is demotivating as hell for next season. We want a top team not a middle NIT team.

The news is positive but overall it still feels like an uphill fight. We need a significant lead investor to get others excited.

Why are we still chopping up something like this? If you're still trying to figure this out, it's too late, it's been too late, and you've already put yourself behind for not only this cycle (which is a given) but next cycle too. Just, for once, it would be great to hear that we are out in front on something.

Revenue sharing. $20.5 m per year we have to spend or is the most we can spend?

If it’s the former, why isn’t like $12m
Going to men’s bball?

Also we can’t sign player contracts (officially) and pay them directly through school till
early June right?

Are we playing it safe again or are we going balls to the wall player contacting before it’s official?

$20.5m is the most we can spend.

And no one is giving us that money. It needs to come off the top of what Seton Hall currently makes from tv deals, sponsorships, ticket sales, merchandise, etc.

If those areas are not generating enough revenue they would have to dip into the money generated from tuition / room and board made off of the general student population.

That’s why schools are looking into tournaments that will pay you money towards your NIL bottomline.

We’re in the weeds on this daily but when you step back and think of the hundreds of millions going out to college basketball players this year from fans - billionaires and regular folk alike - funding NIL it is surreal. We’re not even talking being paid from the money they generate yet.

Pirate Blue donations effectively count as operating revenue so money paid out from that counts towards the $20.5M revenue sharing cap. Donations to Pirate Blue also aren't necessarily going towards paying players as other department expenses get paid from that bucket as well. Donations to the collective, on the other hand, are pretty much guaranteed to be applied to paying players and money paid out from it doesn't count towards the $20.5M cap as it's officially an independent organization. The difference is fairly irrelevant to us as we don't currently have the capability to get even remotely close to the revenue sharing cap but it will be critical to the basketball programs at schools the spend the bulk of their revenue sharing budget on football.
