Very sad news. I’m not even sure I know what sports broadcasting is like without him. He always carried himself so well. Always classy and thoughtful. Throughout the years, things got showier and more amped up in the Look At Me world of sports broadcasting, but he always remained a steadfast, refreshing presence. He will be missed. Condolences to the family.
Me either. I knew he was around for a while but I would have guessed mid-60s. Maybe the most underrated sports broadcasting career ever. Worked for two major networks, the Yankees, anchored SportsCenter, called playoff baseball, NBA, NASCAR, hosted the NFL Today, was first (and I believe only so far) African-American to call the Super Bowl (twice), and of course March Madness host for years. Tremendous loss
His daughter worked for me in an ad agency in CT. Went to her wedding. Nice family and he was genuine to the core. My son got a lot of cool autographed gear due to his connections. Classy guy.
