Groundbreaking and open practice

Player autographs at University Day are for paying people. Sad that little kids that just want a picture or autograph from their favorite player.

This is what it is in 2023.

They should offer limited and or basketball player only merch ( which we all love and clamor for ) as add ons to be signed or purchased . Many more people would spend on merch that goes to NIL vs just a normal handout.

At an open practice when my kids were little, my son asked Duane Jordan for his autograph. Duane took the program, signed it, looked at the other signatures, and said to me your son is only missing Roy Leath's sig. If it is OK with you, I will go find him and get him to sign. We gave him the program. He came back ten minutes later with the program and a huge smile on his face. He game my son the program and said to me you'll never guess what he was doing...lifting weights.

Which is why Duane wil forever be one of my favorite Pirates!!!

I remember getting Dan Hurley's autograph (and being mad at some guy about probing into his time away from the team as inappropriate...a 10 year old realizing a 30/40 year old was a fool is a different life experience conversation for another day...), Shaheen's, etc. I agree with the point about putting together some exclusive merch for them to sign versus making access completely monetary, but it is what it is.

If there is a market value for a player autograph why should the player not make any money off of it?

People have no problem paying $50 or $75 to do so for some long-retired athlete or a current athlete making seven figures a year.

I wanted lots of things when I was a little kid. But things cost money.

That's the irony. At least it's that. Better than paying players to do charity work, which frankly is cringe.
But the way to cultivate a younger fan base is to charge them for the (LOL) privilege??

We can't complain that we haven't seen enough fan engagement/NIL opportunities and then complain when they do offer them. The price is not outrageous and you get to spend time with both teams. Sounds like it should be a good event and at least if you contribute you are getting something of value. Charging kids not ideal, but we have to do something to contribute towards NIL. If anyone is bothered by that I would do what HallDan is doing. Send some money and ask if it can be put towards letting kids in for free. If enough of us do it, it would probably be a big help.

My only criticism is why is this event put out a little more than a week before University Weekend? It's not a huge lift to organize and should have been sent out with the University weekend schedule. More and more I'm wondering if this is being done by design or is it just poor organization.

That has been one of the problem with our NIL events is that there is very little notice and it is something that continues to be a problem and I'm disappointed that it still hasn't been fixed. I naturally assumed they weren't doing anything this year and had already made other plans, now I can't even make the event when this should have been announced a month ago. Hopefully this will improve in the future.

Personally, what I find worse about the whole thing is that if they keep to the schedule, the open practice is less than an hour as the events are timed to start an hour apart.

That has me reconsidering making the 90-minute one way drive to campus as I would typically do.

Then do what I am doing. Support your school by purchasing NIL tickets for the youngsters instead of complaining about everything the school does.

Love to see you take a positive stance on something! Anything!

It’s still a very nice gesture. Listen, I can afford a Starbucks coffee, but it’s pretty cool when the car in front of me pays for it. In turn, I see how many people are in the car behind me, and speed away.

Of course it's a great thing to do for someone in need, I just have a hard time thinking someone who's "Coming Home to The Hall" can't afford $20 for their kids to get autographs.

I don’t even think it’s a need thing. I’m in no way needy, but I do appreciate it when someone picks up the tab. The hope is that if you do a kind act, either someone else will do a kind act for someone else, or, better yet, your name gets crossed off a murder list.

Also not arguing. I’m 100% in agreement that there probably isn’t a need for $20 at seton hall weekend. And maybe it’s a little weird for an adult to hand a child cash. My plan is to get in line, count a few kids behind me, hand over cash so they don’t pay and hope others do the same.

The issue is…The money for the players has always been there…only the schools, NCAA, and the networks were too greedy to share it.

So instead of sharing the pot they said, “No, this is mine. You (players) go get yours from the fans”

Don’t share the pot…expand the pot.

And that’s the shame of NIL.

I don’t mind the players getting a piece if the pie…but there was no need to go and bake a whole new pie!

If they shared the money, you could still have stories like the one told above about Duane Jordan; sadly we don’t have real “college” basketball, much less those feel good stories.

Yet…here I am…contributing to NIL…hoping for change…and done Seton Hall success!

Give me something to be positive about! I want success at the highest levels for our university and our student athletes but we can’t seem to get out of our own damn way!

When it comes to autographs why don’t the teams sell signed balls at the end of the season? This way you would truly be paying based on results and true NIL. How much do you think people would be willing to spend for a team signed ball for a Big East or National Championship? Certainly far more than they would pay for first round NIT bow out or, God forbid, no post season. Get it done one the playing fields and then you’ll be rewarded accordingly. Any of our teams could easily do this.

The problem with this thinking is something like this would have been illegal in the past because the players weren't allow to benefit from their NIL in any way, shape or form.

I don't disagree that the idea of NIL has been bastardized to become pay for play but this idea is along the lines of what NIL was meant to be.

Think about it. Why does a brand attach itself to an athlete or celebrity? To get consumers to part with their money -- and they pay said celebrity handsomely to do so. The difference is our money goes directly to the player rather than becoming some brand's ROI.

Part B to all of this is if the schools end up paying players directly, they'll still be coming to us for more money. At that point we'll be asked to subsidize the non-revenue sports that the money to pay the players will be directed from.

How many youngsters are going to be wandering around the Seton Hall campus without parents who can afford $20? I'd say that will be very close to and possibly zero.
I have every intention of being there and watch what transpires. There will be a lot of kids that would love a free ticket to talk to and get autographs from the players. Maybe their dad can't afford to pay for a ticket or tickets. That is who I will give a ticket to and if the dad can't afford a ticket for himself that doesn't mean his child can't go by himself.

Instead of finding ways on why something can't work maybe we should concentrate on finding ways to make it work.

Things seemed to have changed a little bit with this.

That sounds like a good way to end up in the back of a black & white. 😂
Supporting children is always the right thing to do. Just like when I donated money to the youngsters playing soccer in your program.

Plus I am reaching out to Sha with the hope that he distributes the free tickets as it's better it comes from the coach than a stranger.

I'm amazed that anyone would make light of what I suggested we do to help NIL, SHU and the children.

Pirates Fans,

One week from today, Saturday, Oct. 14, our men's and women's basketball teams will be hosting an open practice followed by an autograph session! This is a great opportunity to first get a sneak peek at our teams on the court and then meet the student-athletes in person!

The open practices are free to attend and will take place in Walsh Gymnasium on the Seton Hall University campus (400 South Orange Ave, South Orange, NJ 07079), beginning with the women at 12 p.m., followed by the men at 12:45 p.m. The autograph session, hosted by Hall Ball Events, will take place next door in the Regan Fieldhouse.

The autograph signing is $40 per adult in advance, $20 for children 12 and under (must be accompanied by an adult). At the door, the adult price is $60. Photographs and autographs with each member of the two teams will be permitted. There will be schedule posters available at the open practice, and fans can bring their own items for student-athletes to sign.

Now seeing that an adult must accompany a child I will do my best to try and have a coach or player pass out the free tickets I will purchase to any adult interested in bringing his child with him.

This event has the earmarkings of three Pirates.

Grant Billmeier, Shaheen Holloway and Jerry Walker.

Can you imagine if you had to answer the question which of these three bleeds Pirate Blue the most?

I didn’t get the impression it’s $20 per family. I think it’s $60/adult and $20/child at the door. Someone with 3 kids walking around campus, who didn’t pre order, is probably not dropping $120 for the autograph session. If some free tickets for the kids gets them in the door that’s a good thing.

I have reached out to the SID to have him give the tickets I am buying to the players/staff and have them disperse the freebies to the parents.

That kind out good will goes far. Hopefully some others follow suit and if so look for me or reach out to the staff on your own to do likewise.

Another great way to help with NIL.

Besides helping the children/parents this is a great way to contribute to the NIL.

So much complaining here about what a poor job the school is doing with NIL. But when we have the chance to do something about it not many are reaching out, instead criticizing those trying to help.

Buy some tickets for those in need. Donate and sit at the table(s) that Paul has purchased for the Beefsteak. Otherwise you lose the right to complain about the school's efforts.

An idea going forward for events that would appeal to kids maybe have an option during the ordering process to choose “sponsor a young Pirate fan”. Then they’d know ahead of time how many kids could be sponsored which might make it easier to identify needy kids who would enjoy the opportunity and could plan to be there.

Another idea, they say membership has its privileges right? If so, maybe make one of the privileges of joining the Junior Pirate Club is a complimentary ticket to one NIL event during the year and give a list of maybe 3-4 eligible events they can choose from. Mom or dad still need to pay but at least it wouldn’t be a financial hardship paying for one ticket as opposed to 4 or 5.
