Yes, Nika made a big jump this year. Both coaches have talked about how her intensity energizes the team. Obviously, she’s not making up for Paige Bueckers, particularly in point production, but she is a heck of a player, particularly defensively.
Without Muhl and Dorka, I think the offense sputters. Obviously, Nika is the engine that makes the team go, but Dorka kept a lot of offensive possessions alive. It would definitely have been close. Betancourt is good for short periods, but she is an 18-year-old kid who would struggle leading the team over long stretches.
It’s hard to say who would replace Auriemma when he retires. CD is on record as saying when he goes, she goes. If I were giving her advice, I would tell her to take a year or two at the helm on her own. She makes something like $500,000 a year and as head coach she would make in the vicinity of $3 million a year. To me, it would be foolish to walk away from that opportunity, but she’s comfortable and doesn’t particularly need the money.
Assuming that Dailey is unavailable, the two names that get mentioned the most are, Shea Ralph, a former UConn, assistant, and player, who is now the head coach at Vanderbilt, and Carla Berube, a former player who is now the head coach at Princeton. Vanderbilt, for all its recent basketball ineptitude, is a pretty good job, so I’m not 100% confident that she would walk away from it to come back to Connecticut, which is certainly one of the top jobs in the country, but also a high pressure one. Berube is a very good coach, who has been successful everywhere she’s gone. I think she is definitely going to get a hard look, as will Ralph.
If I had my preference, well, if I had my actual preference Auriemma stays forever, but if I had my preference for how his eventual successor would turn out, I would have CD take over as head coach and hire Carla as his associate head coach. CD could stay for a year or two to smooth transition to Carla. Once Carla becomes a head coach, I would bring current assistant and former player Jamelle Elliot up to associate head coach from assistant coach. She was previously the head coach at Cincinnati, but has indicated she does not want to be a college head coach again. But, that’s just me looking at the pieces and thinking about how they might fit. I have no inside information on this.
Sorry if that is too long an answer!
