NEWARK, N.J. - The second-year backcourt tandem of Isaiah Whitehead (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.) combined for 42 points; including 25 in the second half as the Seton Hall men’s basketball team pulled away from Georgia to score a 69-62 victory on Saturday night at the Prudential Center.
The win is the third-straight for The Hall (5-1) after the team closed a trip to the Gildan Charleston Classic by downing Bradley and Ole Miss. With successive triumphs over SEC opponents in the Rebels and the Bulldogs, the Pirates have now knocked off two Power 5 foes in-a-row during the regular season for the first time since besting Tennessee and UCLA as part of the 1992 Preseason NIT.
Whitehead finished with 22 points, his second 20-point performance of the young season, while Carrington matched a career-high with 20 of his own to go with six rebounds and a game-high three assists.
Despite being limited to 18 minutes due to foul trouble, fellow sophomore Desi Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) added 11 points to extend his streak to six consecutive double-digit scoring performances.
Seton Hall trailed by as many as seven in the first half and did not lead in the final 10 minutes of the period but Whitehead buried one of his three 3-pointers on the final possession prior to the break to level the score at 30-30 heading into the intermission.
Carrington shouldered the load for much of the second half and The Hall was able to hold off an attempted Georgia rally by scoring nine of the final 12 points down the stretch.
Turning Point
Georgia’s Kenny Paul Geno knocked down a trey to cut the Seton Hall lead to 42-40 with 12:19 to play but the Pirates responded by rattling off seven unanswered points, a stretch capped by a long-range connection from Gordon that opened a 49-40 edge for The Hall.
The Bulldogs managed just one field goal and six total points over the next 5:10 and a steal followed by an old-fashioned three-point play from Gordon gave SHU its first double-digit advantage of the night at 56-46.
UGA did not pull back to within one possession until the 4:24 mark of the second half and was never able to move back in front. The Hall led for the final 15:25 of the contest.
Coach Willard on halftime adjustments:
“Usually we try to watch film during halftime and try to make some corrections, but with this team sometimes you just have to get them out of their own way. I just didn’t like the way we were reacting to the way they were scoring. Good teams are going to score against you. I didn’t like our body language. I didn’t like our facial expressions more or less when someone scored against us. It was really hurting us on the offensive end, so we had a really polite conversation about that.”
