Wil hiring an assistant work in today's world? What does hiring an assistant do now that you can pay the player directly?

I’m sure it depends, but it certainly has helped Gtown so far with Kevin Nickelberry

Sha has a staff of nine people , including his three basketball assistant coaches which means nine salaries plus add in the cost of their benefit package including contributions for medical insurance, pension , 401-K and other expenses. Sha strikes me as someone who values loyal going both ways and his full staff reflects that. This is his staff, he picked them and we’ll wait to see if it’s working and the big factor will certainly be the quality of his first recruiting class.

i never put too much stock in assistants. maybe if a team has a rare recruiting shark or gutless bagman. mostly they all dont matter.

Sha has been here for a cup of coffee and has a better class than what willard had. and went down the wire with a top recruit. we can freak out when he throws a weak hail mary to the canarais island. plus a staff hiring position will always be on the table to get it going like willard. i dont think either of these things will need to happen.

oh, and he took a cyo team to the elite 8.

When you’re talking about assistant coaches don’t discount the value they bring to the table in terms of developing player skills and some assistants have a highly regarded reputation for player development that they do draw players to their team. Just look at Grant’s progression from a strictly a big man’s coach to one who also became a solid big man recruiter .

That's a pretty myopic view. Assistants do a lot in terms of player development, running the practices, conditioning, game planning, in-game adjustments, etc.

Sure, Sha "took" the team to the Elite 8, but those assistants (many of which are on the new staff) were there with him.
