"I hate masks"

no sissy complaints from jerry
Thanks for sharing this nice article which I would’ve never otherwise seen

Jerry seems like a good guy

I am not going to take a stance on mask or no mask but I will note the following hypocrisy:

He writes: “But by screaming about fascism and human-rights violations, you’re not doing what is best for these students. You’re doing culture wars.”

He just engaged in the so called wars by taking a side and lumping together as fascists all those who oppose masks. But that’s what advocacy may require (I guess from journalists too)

He's just your typical liberal media member. Notice how he creates this choice between wearing masks or closing schools. That's not reality. You don't need to wear masks to keep schools open. Schools can be run perfectly fine in-person without masks.

He's not creating that choice. Regardless of our opinions, schools are more likely to quarantine / close if there are outbreaks without masks vs with masks.

Schools shouldn't be closing at all. The only people staying home should be anyone who is actively sick.

Depends on what your goal is there. If you’re staying home because you don’t feel well, sure. If you’re staying home to prevent spreading it to others that you have been in class with for the last week, it’s too late for that.

In any case... again, regardless of what they “should” do, schools will quarantine kids who were in close contact with another infected child without a mask.

You’re omitting stuff which I won’t address

But the last part should’ve read as follows:

schools will quarantine kids who were anywhere near an infected child or teacher regardless of whether they were wearing a mask

You have kids in school?

I do, and our district is handling it the way I said.

There are kids in my family who are in school.

good for you and good luck to your kids this year.

are you saying kids don’t quarantine if a teacher is infected?

I’d prefer no mask mandates but it is absolutely imperative that children be back physically in school. And if you are going to mandate masks, you need to mandate teacher vaccinations. Can’t have it both ways.

Should be no mandates of any kind.

Kids should be unmasked and if the teachers or administration have a problem they can go get another job. Plenty of restaurant and retail jobs open

No they won’t be. Happened at our school last year.

They would if it was close contact for an extended period of time or without masks.

Up to 400 now. August data is not yet complete, but has the most deaths among children 17 and under of any month since January.
It’s more dangerous to walk to school in NYC or Philly. 400 in 20 months, and we don’t have visibility into comorbitities.

Right. The risk is low. Though also not entirely known at this point if Delta is worse for kids or not. I haven’t seen enough to have an opinion, but let’s just be honest that there are signs it is currently getting worse than it has been and we don’t know if that will continue.

At this point, I would guess it won’t get much worse but that is just a guess.

I prefer in-person school to virtual learning, of course. I find it beyond hypocritical the teacher's union is fighting vaccine mandates in certain areas. But I find everything they do hypocritical. My personal feeling aside on vax mandates, the teacher's union can't have its cake and eat it too. Either agree to have school all-year in person without a mandate, which is what they should have done last year before the vaccine was available (private schools pretty much did in my area, public schools had BS half-days and "virtual" "learning" for most of the year). Or they have to agree to the mandate. End of discussion.

My nephew in Europe went to school during the summer, younger kids, without masks. They weathered it just fine.

We’re on the same page but you don’t see that because ….?

you simply chose to disagree with my interpretation/use of “anywhere near”

I expect an auditor/bookkeeper to have more of an open mind

que those who get angry that I gave you nicknames based on your publicly stated profession

The data shows that children continue to be at incredibly low risk, and we also don’t know the comorbity data. There’s a lot that’s not known including the long term effects of isolating children, social development, mental health, adverse effects of vaccines, etc. Another issue that’s been highly politicized with little data to take absolute positions.

Seems like opioids are a much bigger risk to children as data shows significantly more deaths.

I just explained what our district is doing, which is similar to what they are doing with my 7 nieces and nephews in other districts in NJ.

Had nothing to do with an interpretation of what “anywhere near” means. It was just not correct. If a kid in a class gets Covid but everyone in their class was wearing a mask, the infected child will stay home but the rest of the class will continue as normal.

On Jerry’s point, the mask is what will keep kids in school. Right or wrong, regardless of our opinions... that is the fact for now.

opioids are far more dangerous for kids. Don’t think anyone would argue otherwise... but also has nothing to do with a response to a contagious virus and making sure we can keep kids in school as opposed to virtual options.

The point I was trying to make is that I wish we would spend more time focusing on issues that kill more children than Covid.
