I Thought You Had To Be Vaccinated

Yea that doesn’t make any sense. How could attend the school in the first place if you were not?

Can’t read it because it’s behind the paywall but good for them! Why risk myocarditis for a disease with a >99% survival rate? These guys all want to play somewhere professionally after they graduate. That won’t happen if they have myocarditis, blood clots or one of the other delightful side affects of these experimental drugs for a pandemic that truly ended months ago.

Why is it OK for them not to be vaccinated but the rest of the student population has to be vaccinated?

I'm glad our basketball team was given the choice (although I can't read the paywall article) from what the headline suggests. That said, the same choice should have been given to every Seton Hall student.
The article is an interview solely with Cale who says that several of his teammates are not vaccinated and while he's not sure if they will be able to play, he respects their decision. I didn't read anything about them having a choice, which makes it seem like the University may not know they are unvaccinated.

And if that's true, it is going to be hilarious to watch how certain blue-goggled posters react to that given the views they espouse on mandatory vaccinations and restrictions on LOTS.

It's not. And if BS exemptions were allowed the University should be ashamed of itself with the restrictions being imposed on the general student population and kids who've now had about 2 years of college altered in a negative way.

I wonder if Cale regretted making any comments on COVID as soon as he said it.

He shouldn't. It's not like we weren't going to find out when we played SJU that some guys can't play. The real issue was the vaccination requirement for Fall 2021. Did athletes get special treatment. If they did, and John Doe got vaccinated, didn't want to, has a reaction to the vaccine, will he file a lawsuit vs the school because they didn't treat everyone equally.

Thanks for the context. Unfortunately in this world of paywall articles that is missing from journalism today.

“. . . the school does not require proof of vaccination for all students, faculty, and staff. While Seton Hall has asked individuals in each of these groups to declare their vaccination status, for example, only those students living on campus who are vaccinated had to show proof, which means that more than half the student population has not been required to provide proof.

By not mandating physical proof, Seton Hall has fallen behind its New Jersey peers in its efforts to contain the virus. Our ambiguous and unenforced vaccination policy stands in contrast to many other universities in the state, including Rutgers, Princeton, NJIT, Montclair State, Rider, and Saint Elizabeth, all of which require all students to submit proof of vaccination.”

I haven’t read article due to paywall, but I think visiting teams are exempt based on articles I’ve read about NBA and MSG.

Surprised they were allowed at media day, though.

and whatever one thinks about vaccine mandates, I’d think the failure to get vaxxed puts teams at competitive disadvantage. (And, based on Willard‘s comments, sounds like there was an outbreak that caused some missed practice time.)*

*Yes, yes, I know vaccine isn‘t guarantee you won’t get COVID. But certainly it helps reduce effects and decreases likelihood of transmission. Only good thing is the outbreak happened before, rather than in the middle of, the season.

If you are a NY resident you have to be vaccinated to play at MSG - visiting team or not.

I'm assuming they were allowed because those players are vaccinated. That's correct visiting players do not need to be vaccinated unless they are residents of NY (Richmond and Rhoden).

Oh, my bad, misread your post: I thought it said Cale wasn’t vaccinated, when in fact it said Cale said several teammates were not.

Is it clear what makes someone a “resident“ for purposes of the rule? Presumably they’re not commuting to NY for school every day. Residents nevertheless?

Sorry, it was Richmond and Weston. Here's the paragraph. It doesnt say how they determine residency:

Seton Hall and the other visiting teams who play games at the Garden this year (including Duke, Kentucky, Kansas and Michigan State for the Champions Classic Nov. 9) won’t have to provide proof of vaccination, with the exception of those players who live in New York City. The Pirates have two players listed on their roster from New York: Syracuse transfer Kadary Richmond and freshman wing Brandon Weston are both listed as Brooklyn natives

Hmmm. I’ve now pulled up the text of executive order and not sure it matters. It exempts professional athletes and sports teams who are not residents. Not sure college athletes would qualify.

This could be quite problematic if indeed we have players who are not vaxxed.

§ 2. I hereby order that the following individuals are exempted from this Order, and therefore may enter a covered premises without displaying proof of vaccination, provided that such individuals wear a face mask at all times they are unable to maintain six (6) feet of distance from other individuals inside the covered premises:

  1. Individuals entering for a quick and limited purpose (for example, using the restroom, placing or picking up an order or service, changing clothes in a locker room, or performing necessary repairs);
  2. A nonresident performing artist not regularly employed by the covered entity while they are in a covered premises for purposes of performing;
  3. A nonresident professional athlete/sports team who enters a covered premises as part of their regular employment for purposes of competing; and
  4. A nonresident individual accompanying a performing artist or professional athlete/sports team into a covered premises as part of their regular employment so long as the performing artist or professional athlete/sports team are performing or competing in the covered premises.

Thanks. Though now that I’ve looked at actual text of executive order not sure it matters—doesn’t seem to exempt college athletes.

All of these things that you just listed myocarditis/blood clots have a higher risk of occurring when you are infected with covid vs the vaccine. It is not even close. If they were truly concerned about those things taking the vaccine is the best thing you can do for yourself because it does lower you risk of getting infected in the first place. Your statement about experimental drugs is also not true. Pfizer has been fully approved for awhile now so you can't say it is an experimental drug. The vaccines have more than enough data to show they work very well.

I think it is very irresponsible of the school to allow the team to not be fully vaccinated. I wouldn't be surprised if the small amount of exceptions went to the athletes. We will never know who was and who was not vaccinated(except for those who have made it public) but maybe that outbreak could have been prevented with 100% compliance. They might have had only 2 players affected vs 8. No one will every be able to answer that question, but being vaccinated would have given them the best chance possible to prevent an outbreak. It might have also prevented some of the side effects some of the players may have been experiencing after contracting the virus. Look what it did to Jahari last year.

The athletes are at probably the highest risk. They spend a lot of time together as a group and will be traveling all across the US in jam packed stadiums. It may have also caused them to start the season behind in their development. People want to talk about allowing people to have a choice, well each choice has consequences and KW has even gone on record multiple time to say how concerned he is about the team. The saving grace is this happened before the season so hopefully they should not have any more hiccups.

Overall the school has done well with their vaccinations. With the exception of an outbreak in September they have kept the cases to a minimum and you have to give some credit to their high rate of vaccinations.

The school and, sorry to say it, the Coach, too…

This is a NYC order, not a NY order. Therefore only players who live in NYC are live or play in NYC are subject.

Not sure about that. Certain nonresidents, such as pro athletes, are exempt. But college athletes don’t appear to be among them. So this may very well prohibit any unvaxxed players from participating in our games at MSG, whether they live in NYC or not.

There is a quote from the executive VP of MSG in the article saying the rule is exactly the same for college and NBA players.

Got it—thanks. Haven’t read article because of paywall. Not what it says in the executive order itself, but maybe there has been an amendment. Not sure I necessarily trust the interpretation of a Dolan stooge!

Thank you doctorcb12. Your comments are always spot on. People need to listen to there doctors and not the the guy down the block or what they read on the internet.

Exactly. They shouldn't be taking orders from politicians, their employer, their university, the media, etc. about what to do regarding this. It's a discussion to be had between each person and their doctor, period.
