It looks like he was trying to do a lot of things to keep from being caught (like the plates and route), but in the end, too much technology and police work for a 28 year old that was not as smart as he thought. Haven’t seen anything yet in terms of why he was stalking this group. Nothing about motivation. It's interesting that the suspect registered the vehicle in WA after the murders and took a less than obvious route back to PA, although his PA tags were set to expire on 11/30. Per the affidavit, his plate was recorded in Loma, CO on 12/13. That's a town along I-70 in far western CO near Grand Junction. It appears he took I-70 from there as he was pulled over east of Indianapolis two days later. Loma is a 14.5 hour/900 mile drive from Pullman.
A more direct route that any normal person would take when driving from Pullman, WA to PA would be I-90/94 through Montana, the Dakotas, down through Minnesota, Wisconsin and Chicago to pick up I-80. Was he trying to outsmart the cops by taking a strange route?

And in this day and age, where there are security cameras everywhere, it's just a matter of time before police secure the feeds from public or private cameras. I think I read that they had several feeds from local homes. Those are two of the three biggest loose ends of this case, the other being the murder weapon. I'm sure it will all come out in due time as to whether or not he knew them and/or stalked them. He must have targeted them for some reason - either something personal that set him off or he was a budding serial killer who figured they would be his first try.
I also find it interesting that he didn't take a direct route back to Pullman after the murders. Again probably trying to evade law enforcement but the dummy forgot to keep his cell phone turned off or leave it at home.
