I am curious to see what everyone's thoughts were on the Iran situation.

Should we allow them to have a nuke?
Should we go to war with them to prevent it?
What would you do if you were calling the shots.

In my opinion I don' think it matters if they have a nuke or not. They aren't stupid; they know if they ever fired a nuke there would be world wide condemnation and they'd be wiped off the planet. I think a war with Iran would be a VERY bad idea. I would seek a detente with Iran.

Your comment that says they are not stupid would be debated by many. Less nukes the better. The less nukes in the hands of terrorists the better. Iran's government funds terror. Irans government believes that everyone should be a Muslim and they believe in holy war. They don't think like us in the west and do not like our way of life. Their government does not like Israel and have stated such and threatened their existence many times. Iran's government causes lots of problems in the middle east on a day to day basis and tries to stir things up. While I do not want a war and was against the Iraq war, we have to do what we can with the world powers to try and keep nukes away from an Iran. The folks running their government are very dangerous. Continuing to blockade and make things difficult for Iran is the way to go currently IMO but only if we have support of the rest of the NATO countries. If we lose that support we cannot and should not do it alone. I wish we could simply walk away but I don't think we can as our interests in the middle east are too deep unfortunately. We cannot afford another war at this time for lots of reasons and unfortunately Iran knows that. It is surely a difficult question for the world right now and it is not going to get any easier. Detente would also come at a high price and noone would truly know if they had the nuke or not most likely.

I certainly think it's bad for Iran to have nukes. I would be OK with strategic air strikes against Iranian nuclear targets provided we can reach them and either destroy them or seriously delay further work on them. This also needs congressional approval before doing so. I am not for war as we've known it. No boots on the ground, no nation-building, etc.

Iran seems dangerous and one argument has always been that if they develop nukes, they will pass this on to their rogue proxies like Hamas, Hezbollah, and al-quaeda. This seems like a specious argument though as Iran has had chemical weapons for thirty years and they've never passed those on to their proxies. Ahmadinejad is not the real leader in Iran, he's more of a flame-throwing figurehead; it's the clerics who run the country. While they are no saints, they are more reserved and coherent in their thinking than the public rhetoric from the titular head of Iran.

Also, one big problem is that Russia and China will never support anything that harms their Iranian friends.

Good posts 112 and SPK. I just don't see a real good option with Iran at this point. I'm actually worried about Israel acting on their own and striking at Iran. Any sort of military action against Iran is going to result in the price of oil sky rocketing.

Did anyone see the article I linked? Thoughts? Kinda scared me.

BigT please try posting the article again - it does not appear to be linked to your first post.

I did it again and it worked but here is the link.

I would not put too much stock in that article. Clearly anything can happen but we will not attack any country on our own in the near future. That is certain I believe.

Should we "allow them" to have a nuke? -- I don't think it's any of our business to say what other countries can and cannot do but I'm for eliminating nuclear weapons. We should firmly discourage Iran.

Should we go to war with them to prevent it -- Absolutely not. It's not worth our soldiers' lives, our time or our money. While I believe in reducing nuclear stockpiles, one Iran nuke is not the end of the world. We can blow them off the map at any time with our arsenal and they know it. As you said, they aren't stupid.

I would continue the policies Obama has in place but Israel is a major problem. They love to stir things up as well and I'm also worried about them going in and striking. There is no need for Israel to provoke Iran.

That article is nothing more than a work of fiction by a writer withn a vivid imagination. Iran with hundreds of thousands of missiles? If the Straits of Hormuz gets closed down, that cripples Iran.
