Jersey Jump Shot

Jerry is on fire and critical of both Rutgers and SHU with their approach to NIL and new college hoops reality. But he seems to be totally frustrated with SHU, his access to the program. No GM is a major mistake. Still waiting, begging, for an interview with Holloway. Dumped on last years players but is excited to see Clark and Simpkins. Feels Sha has guys who have the ability to grasp his defensive concepts. But man, he’s not holding back about what he thinks of how SHU is running its basketball program.

SHA is running the program and no one else has any say ( better yet, no one has the nerve to say anything). A G.M. has and remains a necessity and a co-ordinate Team of "real" Assistants is needed.

Love Jerry but he was wildly in love with NIL. He was a big time fan of Geo Baker and his efforts. Look what it has wrought.

He’s not in love with NIL. He’s just reporting on reality. Without a healthy NIL, teams can’t compete at a high level. Maybe the House settlement helps a school like SHU a bit.

Interesting possible schedule tidbits - Princeton vs Seton Hall @ the rock as a neutral game Never Forget Tribute Classic, and a possible trip out west

Jerry has absolutely had it with Seton Hall.

To paraphrase - 'I've been doing this for 22 years and have always been more than fair, I shouldn't have to literally beg for an interview. I feel bad for the fans that I can't do my job for them. I've been asking for weeks. I'm disappointed, this is the least access I've ever had at Seton Hall. I had to beg to see a practice last year. I feel stupid, sad and bad about it. I'm 52 years old, I shouldn't have to beg.'

Sad state of affairs in South Orange.

And the absurdity of it is that you could
Not ask for a better beat reporter. He’s a fan and an alumnus and his coverage has been MORE than fair. It is simply idiotic to ghost him the way the Hall has done. Shame on Sha for behaving that way and further shame on Felt and the administration for tolerating it. It is, quite frankly, infuriating.

I'm not one to do those types of things, but I think it's time the fans/alumni spoke up and expressed some of our opinions. The question is who should we address that would actually do anything about it and isn't also part of the problem? Felt? Reilly? Sha? Lyons? Hank?

Fair is not the desc. Jerry ignored the programs warts for a long time. Only time he was critical of Willard was after he signed with Maryland. He's normally very pollyannaish with the program until it's so obvious it'll hit you in your head.

It’s almost like they are intentionally sinking the program. An entire administration can’t be this tone deaf. But maybe they are when you look at how they manage scandals and adversity. They are all accountable but my message to Sha is that “you’ve messed it up”.

he must be at his wits end and basically sees no hope with access to the program so he went attack mode (for jerry this is attack mode)

Totally disagree. We had a very good eight year run. SHU was functioning well under the “old” environment.

SHU always was a mom and pop operation and punched above its weight but it worked for us. What to criticize? 5 NCAAs, two BE banners, top half BE consistently.

Now in the new world the deficiencies are being exposed and the inability to adjust are rightfully being criticized.

He backed Sha over this very message board and Sha still icing him! Sad!

Unbelievable. Jerry has to fight tooth and nail to keep coverage of the program in gannet alive, and SHU gives him the middle finger.

No one…. And I can’t stress that enough … gets more of a pass around here than the last guy you mentioned.

I can't for the life of me understand how the Seton Hall administration at all levels is tone deaf on this. Of all programs, Seton Hall needs as much press as possible yet the openly shun one who really tries to give Seton Hall any coverage.

Mind boggling.

Completely agree, presidency selection is a colossal failure. Nice to be head of the BOR or even on it, a trophy position and I'm sure great in discussions at the club or in client sales pitch meeting but this group is void of oversight and direction but that's the political environment that only the well run catholic institutions have seemed to over come. Was the biggest supporter and defender of Sha, lookin like a mistake. The alienation to the media equating to fan base as last poster stated in unfathomable. Boy, am I ready to pull but I'll give it another year or two always been a glutton for pain. But who knows what might happen!!!!

Our Coach ridicules players and assistant coaches on the floor during a live basketball game. Do you really think he cares about the media, even if it is one who backs the program. At this point, if he hasn’t learned he never will.

And consider the outlet, which makes it even more wild. This isn't the NY Post, ESPN, The Athletic, some huge podcaster/media company, or a mainstream network. Carino not only tries to give us coverage but even if he had full access the scope that coverage would necessarily be limited and specific to New Jersey, if not even more localized within the state.

And coverage matters unless it is for wrong reasons. Many of these Power 4 schools have dedicated podcasts and other mainstream outlets that cover them extensively. UCONN has at least one podcast I've listened to a bunch which is fantastic, not to mention all the coverage they get from outlets within the state, other major media companies like ESPN, Barstool, etc, and frankly even the occasional NY Post article which covers them more than us. Look at what Pitino has done in a short timeframe to change the trajectory of that program -- there are literally 3 articles a day pinned to the NY Post sports page on the app -- for like a year+ now. That's more coverage than we've gotten in 25+ years combined. Not to mention all the other places he frequents, whether it be ESPN, Fox, CBS, multiple late night shows, YES/SNY, Barstool and the list goes on and on.

I just don't get the lock-and-key approach, even if he isn't happy with the team. Even those like me who question this roster and whether it is going to be last year 2.0 once we get into the league play are going to be somewhat optimistic before the season tips because we always are. Don't you want your fanbase to have something to follow or get excited about?

While it does seem silly to lock out Jerry, I also do sometimes wonder: Do we want Sha talking to the media...???

It's way way beyond silly to lock out local media, There are so many more pirate fans out there who are not part of these forums who deserve access and yes we do need him promoting the program and commenting whether positive or negative on his and the team's performance as well as the direction he sees the program going. That part of his job description has obviously not been articulated well to him. That comes from the top. We've beat this to death last year and again now

I get that we all want some insight on the team and that ball is being dropped by the school.

But I’ll play the other side of the coin here. Maybe Sha doesn’t want the blue tinted glasses hype to set unrealistic expectations.

Remember this article from Jerry back in October of 2021?

https://www.app.com/story/sports/co...tice-report-jamir-harris-hot-hand/6088218001/

Jamir Harris was going to give SHU another playmaking guard who shoots lights out, Tyler Powell was going to be a rotation contributor, and Willard was supposed to have a 10 deep rotation (one of his deepest yet).

None of these prognostications could have been farther from the truth. But we buy into it as fans because we want to believe it’s all going to come to fruition.

If Jerry wants continued access, he isn’t going to write a story stating how he believes we are poorly constructed or the talent level isn’t there. So he is going to spin it, overreach, build up the hype. Maybe Sha wants no part of that.

We essentially killed Harris during his time here for not really living up to expectations.

I ask you this…who set those expectations?

I think that may be thinking too much into it. Sha just is super-defensive with the media and in general, handles himself terribly in public when not winning. He hates being questioned. The tone he takes in post-game press conferences on even basic questions is defensive and belittling. He answers most questions with a dirty look and the condescending phrase "I don't know Jerry" or "Why would you ask me that when you already know the answer?"

He shutout ALL media last offseason for months. Wasn't just Jerry, Dan and other local guys. He continues to shutout Rothstein - who every major team allows to view summer workouts to preview the team. Not Sha. He wouldn't let anyone see the team, didn't even have the usual team scrimmage for fans last year. He knew they weren't very talented and not ready for the season. That's not an excuse, it does no good to treat the media like crap and try to hide your deficiencies.

Think it's a natural hate of being questioned especially since he knows that he's not done much right lately.
