Watching the Jets last night I couldn’t help but think how difficult it is to fill the most important position on the field, the QB. The Jets have drafted extremely well in the past couple of years and built an outstanding defense, have very good offensive weapons at both the WR and RB positions and yet have missed with both their recent picks in Darnold and Wilson , both high picks with Darnold the third pick and Wilson the second pick in their respective drafts. If White is the answer at QB and they add a couple of pieces to the OL they could be one of the better playoff teams next year.

If Darnold was able to start under this regime and with this talent, he would be a solid quarterback in my opinion. Adam Gase completely ruined him and he had some of the worst talent in the league supporting him, especially on the offensive line.

Wilson just seems to be a flashy sports car with a bad engine and poor steering.

Either way, the Jets are a QB away from being one of the better teams next year as you said. Hopefully Mike White is that guy.

What this also says is that taking the wrong guy (QB or not) when you have one of those premium picks, can set your franchise development back by years.

The Jets are fortunate to be where they are with two QB whiffs in five years. They've done a good job of filling in just about everywhere else though.

Joe Douglas needs to come clean on Wilson. How could he be so off on the #2 pick?? Needs to be accountability here unlike Gettleman who was in denial the whole time.

Th Jets OL did not do a good job for Wilson last night, but Douglas does needs to come clean on Wilson is right. And the Jets defense has come up short on a lot of plays the last 3 weeks. If Mike White is not hurt Jets win these last 2 games I think. Hell, I think if they came clean on Wilson before the 2 Pats games the Jets are in a better place than now.

The defense is highly overrated

Disagree on Darnold. He was overhyped at USC, and has also flopped in Carolina. Never saw anything specia in Darnold and was relieved the Giants passed on him

Still beats the QB record of Cleveland

It's really important for the QB & OC to mesh. Other than the turnovers, Jones had his best statistical year by far with Shurmer. He was a really bad fit in Garrett's offense but seems to fit well with Dabol.

It's obvious that Wilson & the Jets OC aren't a good fit. The ? now is do the Jets hire an OC that is a better fit for Wilson's skill set or bite the bullet & look for another new QB, again.

At least by having a rotten year last year, it put them in good position to have prime draft picks last year… and thankfully they’ve done their part

I had a dear friend who suffered tremendous losses in his life. He was a gifted speaker and almost everyone knew how difficult his life had been. Audiences were prepared for him to list the painful loss of loved ones in his talk. However, he would say'"I know more about suffering than anyone in this audience.I have been a Jets fan for forty years."

Piratz, hallgrad80 and some others should like this article. I still say Shurmur was behind the Gettlemen drafting of Jones over Haskins, Drew Lock etc.. Looks like he was right.

Good article with another perspective on Jones being drafted . What the Giants are facing is if they want to keep Jones the question becomes at what cost as having enough cap space to address certain of It’s weakness thru free agency is an important part of building its roster.

Jets weren’t the same without MFW. The team is all in behind him… and I see why, the kid has balls and looks like a leader. If you have the linemen in the locker room with those tshirts it means something.

Interesting ( or depressing) to think the Jets… and the Giants both had a chance to have Josh Allen…and the G-men with Justin Herbert too! Don’t get me started! Honestly I always felt like coming out of college Allen just felt like a Giant… but then again that was if the Giants had a GM with at least a room temperature iq. Could you imagine the Jets with Allen now? Burning the second pick of the draft on Wilson is a tough one.

FWIW, Herbert had a terrible HC and an awful OL his rookie season. He got knocked around and got his butt kicked a bit but tough, immensely talented kid put up record numbers.

Jets need to start Zach Wilson rest of season to make definitive decision

By Mark Cannizzaro

WARNING: This is not going to be a popular take, not what you want for Christmas under your tree or in your stocking.

The Jets should start Zach Wilson at quarterback for the final two games of the season — even if Mike White is medically cleared to play with his cracked ribs.

The moribund 19-3 home loss to the Jaguars on Thursday night essentially eliminated the Jets from the playoffs. Even if they aren’t mathematically eliminated this weekend, their playoff chances are “farfetched,” head coach Robert Saleh conceded Friday.

That being the case, what else do the Jets have to play for other than using the final two games to help formulate a future decision on Wilson?

Finding out more about Wilson and whether the 2021 No. 2 overall draft pick truly is a franchise quarterback was, after all, one of the missions of this season for the Jets. His rookie season was uneven, to be polite, and the Jets needed to find out how much he’d progress in his second season.

Though no one on the Jets wants to admit it, the reality is that Wilson hasn’t shown tangible signs of progression from Year 1 to Year 2, and never has that been more evident than watching Thursday how far Jacksonville’s Trevor Lawrence has come in that same time period.

Saleh is in an impossible situation, because he wants — needs — to win games. He has watched a 7-4 start evaporate to 7-8 thanks to the 0-4 free fall. And to make the argument that Wilson gives the Jets a better chance to win than White does is folly.

That leaves Saleh in the difficult and delicate spot of deciding whether it’s more important to win games the next two weeks or try to find out more about Wilson … unless Saleh and the Jets believe they know enough and have seen enough.

And that’s highly possible.

Saleh, whether it was unwitting or calculated, dropped bread crumbs Friday hinting that Wilson — whose confidence, even by his own admission, is damaged — may be shut down for the season.

The head coach went from vowing after the game on Thursday night, “We haven’t seen the last of him,’’ to saying Friday that “there are also cons” to playing someone like Wilson when his confidence is shot.

“You got to think about the player and where he’s at and whether or not you’re doing more damage or you’re helping him,” Saleh said. “You just want to make sure that you’re making the best decisions for the team and not just say, ‘Hey, let’s just get this guy reps, just to get this guy reps.’ ”

That sounded like a strong hint that Wilson is done — at least for 2022.

But I believe Saleh should start Wilson against the Seahawks a week from Sunday in Seattle — unless the organization is already convinced that they’ve seen enough of him.

I don’t know that I’d have the same take if the next game was at home, because Jets fans are done with Wilson, and it has gotten to the point at which he’s booed during pregame warm-ups. But the Jets are on the road for the final two games, which would make life much more manageable for him psychologically.

Asked on Friday if he still believes Wilson is his “quarterback of the future,” Saleh danced around the question.

“I’ve got confidence in all our guys,’’ he said. “I just feel like every single year there’s a kid who’s just struggling, and everybody wants to quit on him, and this might not be their year, but it doesn’t mean that next year can’t be their year.’’

Another serious hint that Wilson is done for the season.

Jets offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur, asked on Friday what more he knows about Wilson through 16 weeks of this season than he did before the season, said, “That he’s resilient.”

“He has grown a lot in the last two years,” LaFleur insisted. “He’s faced more adversity than he probably ever has in his entire life, and he keeps showing up to work looking for ways to get better. I do believe he’s a better quarterback. I know it’s not showing.”

Saleh, asked if Wilson’s biggest problem is physical or mental, said: “I think confidence. For Zach, and it doesn’t take long to flip. He just needs a good string of consecutive games, quarters, plays, of putting together good football. And once you get in a groove, everything just starts clicking and moving faster.”

The only way Saleh and the Jets will find that out is by playing Wilson the final two games. In a weird way, they know more about White, who has started only six games in the past two years, than they do about Wilson, who has started 22.

Wilson is the player they need to make the most definitive decision on. So, play him the final two games. What more do the Jets have to lose?

I’m 100% certain Wilson does not know the plays. That is one of his many many problems

Personally, if there's any belief that Mike White is your guy. You play him and give him the reps if he's healthy.

If White's not healthy or if you still believe that Wilson is your QB, then I agree, let him play himself into that role or out of the picture completely.

Saleh has to balance winning games -- they are still in the playoff picture -- with continuing to build for the future. This wasn't supposed to be a playoff year, and I'd agree the 7-4 start changed the expectations, but they can still be where they thought they would be if the QB situation somehow works itself out.

Saleh must have been told he had to play Wilson. Even though they were 5-2 at one point with Wilson to me it has to be about winning games and they should have gone to White sooner.
