I don't recall anyone specifically being out to get Edwards. If Holding or any official spent their entire time going solely after Edwards, I think there would've been an outcry. Imagine taking the concept of the story below and applying it to Edwards.
There are a lot of similarities between the two cases. But here are the major differences.
1) Edward’s prosecuted by the Fed not the State
2) Edward’s prevailed at trial because the intent of the payments was so his wife would not find out that he got a woman pregnant during the campaign. Not because he was running for President.
3) Trump denied the affair so he could not use the Edwards defense credibly.
4) the Edwards defense was still tough to make because the Stormy Daniels affair happened long ago and the only plausible reason to pay her was because of the presidential election.
5) I don’t believe Edwards tried to write it off as a business expense. He only had a donor pay the woman off.
