St. John’s to Host Nebraska in 2022 Gavitt Tipoff Games

Red Storm will welcome Nebraska to Carnesecca Arena for the second time

QUEENS, N.Y. (July 1, 2022) – The St. John’s men’s basketball team will host Nebraska as part of the 2022 Gavitt Tipoff Games, it was jointly announced on Friday by the BIG EAST and Big Ten conference offices.

The contest, which is set for Nov. 17, will take place at Carnesecca Arena. Television destinations and tip times will be finalized at a later date, but all eight games will air on either FS1 or BTN.

The annual series, which will run from Nov. 14-18, pits the BIG EAST against the Big Ten while honoring the legacy of BIG EAST founder and college basketball visionary Dave Gavitt, who passed away in 2011.

St. John’s is 3-2 all-time in the Gavitt Games, including a perfect 2-0 record in home games. The Johnnies downed Rutgers in Queens during the first edition of the series in 2015 before defeating Nebraska at Carnesecca Arena in 2017. The Red Storm also won at Rutgers in 2018, but has lost two other road tilts, falling at Minnesota in 2016 and Indiana this past November.

The BIG EAST dominated last season’s Gavitt Games, winning six of the eight matchups played between the two conferences. The Big Ten took narrow 5-3 victories in 2018 and 2019 after the first three editions of the series all ended in 4-4 ties.

In 2017, St. John’s rolled past the Cornhuskers in front of more than 4,600 fans at Carnesecca Arena. The Johnnies jumped out to a 13-point halftime edge before closing out the contest, 79-56. Sophomore Shamorie Ponds registered 22 points, seven rebounds, five assists and a pair of steals to lead the Red Storm. Justin Simon logged a 13-point, 12-rebound double-double in addition to tallying four steals and three blocks.
