sad state of affairs that this is what the coaches have to do to get kids to games.
Gonzo used to do something similar.

He would buy pizzas on game days and serve them to the students in the Rec Center at lunch.

I see it as a nice touch. The coaches reaching out to the students.

That's true. It would be nice if we were beyond that for the men's program by this point though. I get it for the women's program, that's going to be a tough sell no matter what. Plus actions like this seem way more like something Bozzella would want to do anyway.

That's exactly what it is - coaches reaching out to students. By the way, a number of students I know talk about this kind of outreach fondly, for example, being engaged by Father John - a wonderful man who takes time to actually have full supportive open conversations with students. He's very well-liked.

Besides, I'm sure that students mainly do NOT have the jaded views we have about one of the coaches, and so, getting a dog from KW would be kind of fun. Getting a dog from Tony B would be more than fun, the man radiates joy.

Anyway - the personal connections I think are very important. I wish they would do this kind of thing regularly. Students do remember things that tie them to school signatures (for SHU, the basketball team has been and should be such an anchor for life). So - little things and big things all add up.

It looks like Willard is getting ready for his next job. Nathan ' s on Coney Island has a couple of openings.

I remember during my time at SHU we were practicing in Walsh for the school's intramural championship game and Raf came up to me to offer encouragement and a few pointers.

Many years later I still remember it like it was yesterday.

To show you what a great guy Raf is I saw him last year at Big East Media Day and brought the conversation up to him. He looked at me and said that was you?

I know there is no way in the world he would remember what happened way back then but it goes to show you what kind of guy he is.

Coaches reaching out to students is always a good thing.

Kudos to Willard and Bozzella.

I agree Dan. Never a bad thing. On the other hand, couldn't we find a better picture than the one with the guy in RU colors.

It's not a sad state of affairs at all. They had a season ticket pickup on the green and a free UA shirt to thank us students for buying tickets like they usually do. I enjoyed getting to talk to Coach Willard and he thanked me for supporting the team and said he was looking forward to the game tomorrow, as am I. In no way was he standing out there pleading for kids to show up at the Pru tomorrow. He just wanted to show his support for how much he appreciated us buying tickets and supporting the team.

Exactly - sounds exactly right. And this is something I think coach likes to do - not on a stage in front of a microphone, but just standing there one on one like fdamato22 describes.

Dan gives the picture perfect reason for the coach or teach to student connection. We remember connections like that for our whole lives.
