Stony Brook, N.Y. - Three Pirates had three-hit days, including Magnus Krieger, who scored the go-ahead run in the seventh inning and had an important RBI single in the eighth, as the Seton Hall baseball team defeated Stony Brook, 8-6, Saturday at Joe Nathan Field.
Krieger was 3-for-5, joined by Kevin Milewski, who was 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI, and Aiden Robbins, who was 3-for-5 with a home run.
Stephen Curry was the winning pitcher for the Pirates, allowing just one run in three innings of relief. John Downing came into the game in the seventh inning with the tying run on base and got out of the jam and finished the game allowing one run in 2-2/3 innings to earn the save.
How It Happened
Stony Brook scored first and scored one run in each of the first five innings, but the Pirates had an explosive third inning when Robbins led off with a home run, Jimmy Brennan followed with a single, and Milewski brought him home with a two-run blast.
It was 5-5 in the seventh inning when Krieger bunted his way on base with one out. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and came around to score on a Casey Cumiskey RBI single to center, putting the Pirates on top 6-5.
The Hall tacked on in the eighth with important insurance runs. Robbins dropped a one-out double to left, and after Stony Brook got the second out, the Seawolves opted to intentionally walk Milewski to set up first and second with two outs. Krieger made the Seawolves pay for their decision, slapping a single to left that scored Robbins, and Milewski came around when the cutoff throw was errant.
Stony Brook put the tying runs on base in the bottom of the eighth, scoring once, but Downing was huge on the mound. With two runners on, he struck out Johnny Pilla, and then after walking Nico Azpilcueta to load the bases, he also fanned a pinch-hitting Kincaid Bergthold. Downing then set the Seawolves down in order in the ninth to secure victory.
