Learning Experience

Sarcasm aside, not too much to dissect about this game. Xavier is just a better team. Liked our fight...To your point, Xavier is a more seasoned team (especially in their arena), so we were in a position to learn. I don't think that I am drinking the Kool-Aid, but I think that those who feel like we should run the table with 10 underclassmen are being a little ridiculous.

Go Pirates.

I don't believe Xavier is a better team. I really believe we played poorly. If we play better at home and get a saner whistle, we can beat those guys.

The team will be on the bubble, sweating it out on selection Sunday. Actually, that is a good thing. Decent chance to dance.

Catholic - We can definitely beat Xavier; just not sure that we are the favorite right now (especially on their court). This team CAN beat any team in the BE this year.

Comeback when you learn something about the game of basketball. The team should be ahead of where it is. Coaching is killing us.

Go Pirates.

Catholicman, Please. We are not even close to Xavier. And we will struggle against any team that has a good big man. Farr was like a man against boys. Frank

He was playing against Delgado who was in foul trouble. He was bulling his way to the basket the whole game without ever getting called for a foul. Watch that kid next game around. I guarantee you, with a better whistle, he will not have a game like that in Newark.

Pirated - Good point on the coaching. It is where I am least confident in this current squad. I believe we have the horses, and absent any implosion, I think we are on the right trajectory as long as coaching (or lack thereof) gets in the way. Additionally, please point me to your youtube basketbal

We couldn't sustain the defensive intensity due to foul trouble. However, we do have some real weaknesses in our interior defense.

We get eaten up by veteran bigs like Ochefu and Farr because Delago doesn't get after it defensively and the other two - Anderson and Anthony - just cannot withstand.

I knew we were in trouble from the bigs early in the game when I noticed Farr going into his gradual move to the basket. We should have triple teamed him and gotten at least a jump ball every time he did that.

Interior defense? The guards got blowed by all game! What game were you watching? Yes, bigs kicked ass! But constant penetration and dump off passes made it very easy! Whitehead plays zero defense!

Boys against men. We played the best we could- X is just better .

Another 2 years and we'll be top tier Big East- if everybody stays and we get a good point guard. But other BE teams have great underclassmen too so we'll have to see.

IW is really playing out of position.

Why does Willard use the schedule as an excuse every game? Did it again today. Just drives me nuts...plays the victim too much.

Winning coaches do not make excuses for losing. Long way to go but getting better. Slowly.

About what I expected. No one in their right mind would have picked a win at X at the start of the season. The effort was there but our vulnerabilities were on display as well. Inconsistent 3 point shooting (although KC has improved greatly), not enough size, not enough quality depth. A lot of inexperience. Throw in a road game against a top 5 team and you need to play nearly a perfect game to get the W. All that being said we were in the game midway thru the 2nd half.

One vulnerability that X has IMO is its reliance on the 1-3-1. A quality outside shooting team could really tear that apart.

We're right on schedule. The toughest stretch in the schedule is behind us, we've played Nova, Providence, and X on the road already. We're done with Nova. We have chances for four quality wins at home-- G-town, Butler, X, and Providence. There are 11 games left. Can we go 7-4? That gets us in. 6-5? On the bubble.

Agree completely. Problem is, we can't keep moving him back and forth between the 1 and the 2 and we don't have a pure PG this year or next. I'd still consider having KC and DG bringing the ball up as much as possible and as soon as the next game.

Xavier is damn good. Phew, they are tough. Bigs and forwards galore!

I would bring IW in off the bench. I know he scores and plays defense but he's making offensive mistakes that set us back. And today he struggled badly in the first half. Herky jerky- forcing things. (Goshdurnit I hate the weave?

Need a calming influence out there to start the games and get us the lead.

Cman,I was just responding to your comment that we are better than Xavier. If you believe that, then you think we should be ranked 3rd in the nation. Frank augto

Exactly what I texted my nephews (Nova fans) during the game X deserves their ranking.

Hopefully you're being sarcastic. Otherwise, your knowledge of basketball is limited or seen thru pirate blue tinted glasses.
You must not have watched Xavier get destroyed by Nova. Xavier has looked incredibly good at times this year. But they don't handle adversity well.

Do you even know what their record is, what the RPI is or where they're ranked?

Yes I am aware of that. I watch a lot of college basketball. Read stats, etc. I never said they were a bad team. It was more about what I was saying about our team. Also, you have to consider that in conference play RPI and rankings are not as meaningful because the teams know each other and have histories against each other.

I would love to be proven wrong but I find it very hard to see X as a top 5 national team.

They have size but that size doesn't compare to the kind of athletic and speedy size that seems to grow on trees in the ACC, SEC, Big XII etc.

Again, I'd love to be proven wrong but neither Villanova nor Xavier have the kind of upside you'd expect from top 5 teams. Unfortunately, even if the RPIs look strong and they get seeded well, these are early Big East exits waiting to happen (again).

Based on the eye test alone rather than computer rankings, we let both games slip away this week. Poor decisions, poor shot selection, selfish play and defensive lapses undermined our excellent hustle, determination, speed and athletic ability. Put another way: our poor coaching undermined our physical talent.
