South Orange, N.J. — Junior Caroline Lipton (Alexandria, Va.) scored her first career goal and it proved to the game-winner as the Seton Hall women's soccer team defeated Rider, 1-0, at Owen T. Carroll Field on Sunday.

The Pirates (3-1) have now won three-consecutive matches after dropping their season-opener. Despite the 1-0 score, Seton Hall dominated on the stat sheet as it easily out-shot Rider, 22-4, and posted eight shots on goal to the Broncs' one.

How It Happened

The first half was an impressive showing for the Pirates but they only had one goal to show for it. It came in the 32nd minute after Lipton and classmate Natalie Tavana (Middltown, Conn.) applied pressure while Rider possessed in The Hall's attacking third. The pressure was successful as Lipton stole a Rider pass and found herself one-on-one with the keeper. Lipton's strike with her left foot slotted the ball in the upper left-hand corner and it gave Seton Hall a 1-0 lead.

A few minutes later, the Pirates drew a foul in the box and Tavana stepped to the spot to take the penalty kick. The Rider keeper dove to the wrong side but was able to make a tremendous save with her foot that kept a 1-0 game going into halftime.

The Broncs proved to be much better in second half after letting the Pirates put up 16 shots in the first half alone. However, the Seton Hall defense, led by a back line made up of junior Chiara Pucci (Munich, Germany), junior Rachel Gerrie (Littleton, Colo.) and freshman Lily Camacho (Scotch Plains, N.J.), allowed the Broncs to attempt just two shots in the second half. One of those was a shot on goal late in the game off of a corner kick set piece that was stopped by graduate goalkeeper Morgan Fedosiewich (Ottawa, Ontario).

  • Freshman Gia Milano (Scotch Plains, N.J.) and senior Alex Fuggle (London, England) also contributed to the clean sheet effort on the back line.
