Meanwhile, on the Providence campus

Throw him in jail and throw away the key!
No way, get rope and a big tree and hang him high in the streets for all the people to see.

I'm kidding but something needs to be done to stop this crap and I'm not sure jail is enough of a deterent.

If it just gets buried without any further attention that would be the best answer. Deny someone like this attention is the worst thing you could do to them.

Vandalism is out of control. I was browsing CNN last night, one of their top stories is a BLM sign was vandalized in California, and CNN pointedly said it was a terrible crime, but they have not condemned all of the vandalism taking place to public property.

The point being all vandalism should be condemned, but the media is paintimg alot of vandalism in a heroic light.

Imagine being more outraged over vandalism, statues of bad people being torn down, etc than widespread police brutality, whether it be the cracking of skulls of peaceful protesters all the way to the consistent murdering of black people b/c of systemic racism. It's crazy to me to start a thread over this or clutching your pearls bc of some moron with spray paint, but doing nothing irl over the police state mentality in this country that hasn't improved at all since Rodkey King, almost 30 years ago. But you'll post something like "man what that cop did to Floyd was awful, he should def. go to jail" and feel better about yourself.

There’s more than one reason to be outraged by things going on in the world. There’s no excuse for what happened last night in Providence, just like there’s no excuse for what’s happened in terms of incidents with brutality. It’s pretty sad that that we are basically being lectured lately on how there’s apparently only one virtuous way to think in this society, and any contrary thought, even though the only mention of police brutality in this thread is coming from you, is “clutching your pearls over some moron with spray paint,” and different viewpoints are indicators of awful, bigoted and racially tinted behavior. You say so, so we are all supposed to think so.

Came across a story that is getting more play after the floyd murder...last summer in aurora, co a male black massage therapist was stopped by police because he was walking home and someone called 911 over a suspecious person with a mask, the person was anemic and would get cold. Of course the police roughed him up, paramedics came and shot him up with a sedative, he had two heart attacks en route to hospital, was brain dead and life support was ended days later.

He is not worth engaging with. Too crazy, too far gone and filled with hatred. Incapable of having a rational conversation.

Thread more appropriate for LOTS. I will be transferring it there in 30 minutes.

Imagine thinking vandalizing, looting and damaging private and public property is okay. Imagine thinking people have to stop what they're doing to go protest what you deem they should, otherwise be called a racist. Imagine going after people's jobs for saying "All lives matter". Welcome to America 2020, where the fragile weak-minded demand safe spaces and an End to civilized society.

It makes perfect sense. The law and order segment are more concerned with the appearance that everything is fine and under control. Hence why coverage of statues of old oppressors being torn down is a grave concern and they are acting like someone torched a Rembrandt. Though I doubt anyone in this thread would advocate lynching for a painting being destroyed. Only old confederate statues.

So just to be clear here, you’re jokingly suggesting on the spot lynching but seriously suggesting on the spot police shooting? Is that correct?

just making a comment on the priorities of some here. Yes you started the thread but you’re not really the subject of my ire. Wouldn’t lump you in with the reactionaries on here.

interesting that you described vandalism as a virus though (LOL to that). I would say that the mentality, training & silence that encourages cops to crack heads knowing there will be little if any repercussion is exactly the same kind of virus. It spreads to all areas of law enforcement, and the evidence seems obvious to me, yet we’ve heard from the right wingers that “no no no these are isolated incidents”...”99% of cops are good”...and my favorite one bc of the irony...”just a few bad apples”. I love that one bc doesn’t an apple that’s gone bad spread to the rest of the bunch?

Why do I get the feeling you were rejected from being a police officer? You're like a scorned lover, I'd suggest finding a hobby. This much hate and aggression isn't good for anybody.

Where did I suggest on the spot shooting? There's nothing more harsh than jail except shooting in your world?

My apologies for being so small minded and presuming your intent. Please expand. What is more harsh than jail but less harsh than public execution in your world?

But where does it stop, first confederate statues, then statues of Christopher Columbus, now it is Woodrow Wilson, who is next Washington and Jefferson, then what Mount Rushmore, give it time Rembrandt might be on chopping block at some point.

They won't stop. They want to turn America into a socialist, godless society.

Nah, its bc you don’t really care all that much, do you? I’ll see if they have Melania’s jacket in your size.

I can come up with a ton of things, sorry to see you are so small minded. For starters since our NBA players won't denounce China, how about some Chinese water torture.

Everyone is on the chopping block. They won't be satisfied until all white historical figures have been eliminated. Once they be wiped away the founding fathers they can prove this country was founded on racism, etc and begin to fundamentally change our country.

These people don't have 1% of the courage that Robert E Lee did. The guy was a great commander for the US army, and only served the South because he wouldn't turn his back on his fellow men and women of the South. He knew full well his forces were not on the same playing field as the Union but he chose to fight for his people.

I see your point here. It is a slippery slope between what is culturally and historically significant art and what is just a statue commissioned by a local politician 100 years ago to support hate. The world we live in will keep moving forward though, some artifacts will be saved and some will be lost/destroyed just like it’s always been.

But by the same token, having a current local politician or better yet an angry mob decide what is historic and what is racist is not the answer either.

If a community decides as a whole, they want to remove something or replace a statue with another, it is their community and they have that right, but just destroying history because you do not agree with it is a slippery slope.

Exactly let the PEOPLE vote.

Nah, you're just using the slippery slope argument to distract, common tactic of the right. We stop at the confederacy statues, and obviously bad people like the mayor of Philly Rizzo (I believe that was his name), Andrew Jackson, etc. Doesn't need to go past that, nor is there any fervor to tear down founding father statues. And don't bother citing the little fringe thing from last week about George Washington, b/c we both know that's a goofy little outlier & no one is actually seriously considering taking his statues down.

Also, confederate statues, flags etc don't have to destroyed. They should be removed from public areas where they send the entirely wrong message to basically everybody, but especially black people (subtly is part of an overall system that tells them to think of themselves as second class citizens in their own country)...and placed into museums, with proper plaques & what not to describe their history.

You won't watch this, but you should. This is one of many cogent arguments that illustrate the thought process behind the taking down of Confederate statues, renaming of forts, schools, etc.

And if they vote the statues out, there's always places that want those statues. De Blasio had a tough stance on getting rid of the Columbus statue 3 years ago, until the mayor of Massapequa said his town will glady take it. His bluff was called and the statue still stands.

Not true, Columbus statues were targeted few years back and continues today, statue in Garfield NJ was vandalized several times in last year and West Orange mayor wants statue removed from his town, nothing to do with confederacy or slavery. Notes Dame Univ planned to cover over some famous Columbus murals. Monmouth university removing name of Woodrow Wilson from building and Princeton will probably follow suit.

So we are not only talking about confederate statues.

Imagine being triggered by a historical statue. We have some stupid people in our country.

They're not stupid. They're soft. They would cut their own uncle out of every family picture if he offended someone whenhe was 12 or he didn't like one of the following Irish, Italians, Polish, Germans, etc. I'm curious what they would do to themselves if they found out their ancestors were bad people?

shu09 likes the note but likely not aware of the historcial facts, woodrow wilson was born in the south, was a southern sympathizer

Okay, I watched it, they have right to their opinions just like you and other people have right to a differing opinions.

But this is all one sided, statues have to go, they are bad. Sure someone can find some clip of someone on why taking down statues is bad.

I do agree with him about teaching more in school about the horrors of slavery.

Also, the woman saying she was in favor of mobs ripping down statues with ropes, that made them seem real credible, even her cohost was taken a little back by her comment.

Columbus falls under the etc. part of my statement too. You’re aware of his brutal, genocidal history right?
