Meanwhile, on the Providence campus

Why do I get the feeling you were rejected from being a police officer? You're like a scorned lover, I'd suggest finding a hobby. This much hate and aggression isn't good for anybody.
I’m sure that’s not the only time he/she has been rejected!

Nah, you're just using the slippery slope argument to distract, common tactic of the right. We stop at the confederacy statues, and obviously bad people like the mayor of Philly Rizzo (I believe that was his name), Andrew Jackson, etc. Doesn't need to go past that, nor is there any fervor to tear down founding father statues. And don't bother citing the little fringe thing from last week about George Washington, b/c we both know that's a goofy little outlier & no one is actually seriously considering taking his statues down.

Also, confederate statues, flags etc don't have to destroyed. They should be removed from public areas where they send the entirely wrong message to basically everybody, but especially black people (subtly is part of an overall system that tells them to think of themselves as second class citizens in their own country)...and placed into museums, with proper plaques & what not to describe their history.
You’ve obviously never spoken to people who’s families have lived in the south since before the revolution. Not surprising.

I’m sure that’s not the only time he/she has been rejected!

I get the opposite impression. I get the feeling a number of these people have never donated their time in the inner city. I get the feeling they want others to make the inner cities better so they don't feel bad about not helping out. I've donated countless hours in Newark and had some of the most rewarding experiences of my life and I'm eternally grateful for those experiences because I went to help others and when it was all said and done I learned more from them than they learned from me. I get the feeling a number of people haven't gotten their asses out of suburbs and feel guilty about it.

I'm aware. Is the thought police saying a person from the 1800s/early 1900s was not allowed to be a "southern sympathizer?"
his actions, words and thoughts on immigrants, blacks etc, did you know that Princeton was a northern most slave trade outpost

I am italian i dont even know why columbus day is celebrated to be honest
Very True. Columbus wasn’t even Italian. It’s a myth perpetrated by Columbus himself. However, Columbus was Spanish. He never wrote in Italian even to his own brother. Both wrote in Spanish and he signed his name Cristobol Colon. So why the Italian myth? No one really knows but theorized that Columbus May have been an enemy of the crown of Castille. Thus changing his identity to an Italian.

The country is getting more polarized. I am obviously against police brutality but the solutions that all cops are bad, or defunding the police are insane. Body cams should be mandatory on all police. Laws should be changed to make it easier to fire Bad police officers.

While there should be protests, i am wholly against vandalizing, the rioting and looting. I am all for getting rid of statues of traitors like members of the confederacy. Traitors should not have statues. Just like Benedict Arnold. A great general until he betrayed his country. No statues of him exist except at Saratoga where only his boot is displayed but not his name. I am against tearing down statues of Columbus, And all of our founding fathers. We cannot judge men using a lens of a 21st Century person and looking back 500 or 200 years. Will

well said. I think 80% of the country feels like you do. 10% on the far right, and 10% on the far left disagree. Unfortunately the 80% is silent. No one is holding our politicians accountable. Holding them accountable by vote will only allow the country to be destroyed over the next 5 months

There was no Italy as we know it today, modern day Italy came around in the 1860s. But he was born in Genoa and lived in what was modern day Italy for some years. There is really no credible evidence he was originally from Spain.

If you have ever gotten the opportunity to walk the battlefields of Gettysburg you will notice that there are statues commemorating both Union and Confederate armies and their leaders. The placement of those statues is what is striking. It acknowledges who fought and lead the battles but clearly differentiates where the battle was fought and who won.

That is a history lesson itself. I’m sure someone who lives in Mississippi would have a different view from somebody in Massachusetts. Opinion shouldn’t determine which statues stand and which do not. What is infinitely more important is learning from history both good and bad.

Been to Gettysburg multiple times. Incredible place.

I’d be curious in general if anyone has spent considerable time in the south (and I don’t mean drunk in New Orleans). My experience of living 5 plus years in Arkansas is the confederate ideals are much more than just a part of history to a significant segment of the population.

I lived in Richmond for a period of time and the only southern state I haven’t been to is Alabama. Not sure what “confederate ideals” are. The confederacy is part of their history and I think it’s normal to have some pride. In general, I do find those originally from the south to be more polite.

Meaning they don’t just see those statues as a part of history or a symbol of pride. They are rallying points for a set of ideas.

when I first moved south, I was stunned by the segregation and just how openly it was accepted that there were two classes of people. Phrases like “the south will rise again” aren’t just phrases, it’s an actual mindset of many. Everyone often brushes off Nolan Richardson, but it was no secret why his horses were shot at.

There are just as many areas of segregation in the South that there are in other areas, and breaking it down to two classes of people like you are suggesting is way too simplistic. It’s anecdotal but the company I worked for took great pains to advance diversity at the management and board level (that would put Google, Facebook and Twitter to shame), and this was 20 years ago.

Certainly. There’s segregation in many parts of the country. How many of those areas flaunt the minority population with statues of persons that directly contributed to that segregation.

We have a different view of statues and you are looking at them in a very different prism.

And that’s probably the root of the issue. A statue can mean one thing to one person, and have a completely different meaning to some one else.

Probably true... Kind of like naming bridges and buildings after politicians. Kind of stupid and never made sense to me. Had a good laugh the day they took the Brendan Byrne arena sign down.

It makes perfect sense. The law and order segment are more concerned with the appearance that everything is fine and under control. Hence why coverage of statues of old oppressors being torn down is a grave concern and they are acting like someone torched a Rembrandt. Though I doubt anyone in this thread would advocate lynching for a painting being destroyed. Only old confederate statues.?

Were Lincoln, Washington, and T. Roosevelt "confederates?"

No one is talking about statues here, anyway. A religious site was descecrated. To most rational people, that's a hate crime.

Came across a story that is getting more play after the floyd murder...last summer in aurora, co a male black massage therapist was stopped by police because he was walking home and someone called 911 over a suspecious person with a mask, the person was anemic and would get cold. Of course the police roughed him up, emts came and shot him up with a sedative, he had two heart attacks en route to hospital, was brain dead and life support was ended days later.

EMT's can't shoot people up with sedatives in most states, so I would question the veracity of that story.

That is the first intelligent thing he posted. A nice break from his insult laden midnight rants.

Yes. I don't know much about the story -- are they suggesting the ketamine killed him?
Its a story that has resurfaced with recent events that have taken place. It appears that between the trauma the officers did to him and this deployed drug his body had an adverse negative reaction...i know shu09 will say if he didnt show any resistance this would not have happened...i watched portions of the body cam not the best moment for aurora pd

Protesters Dump Statue of Anti-Slavery Activist Hans Christian Heg in Lake
Khaleda Rahman 2 hrs ago

Protesters in Wisconsin hurled the statue of Hans Christian Heg—who died fighting to end slavery in the Civil War—into a lake.

Lmao these protesters are just ****ing morons. I doubt any of them actually have historical knowledge. It is scary how stupid the average person is, and even scarier that 50% are stupider. Lord help us.

I hadn’t heard anything about Washington, Lincoln etc being desecrated but then again statues is not my number 1 news item of interest. This started out as a desecration of a religious cemetery, yes, but the topic veered off long ago. The alleged perpetrator, a singular acting “bad apple” was arrested and will most likely be locked up for a while, regardless if they choose to charge him with a hate crime.

At this point, the people ripping down statutes are no longer protesters. They are vandals out on the town having a good time.

It is occurring in Democratic run cities whose mayors and police chiefs are allowing it to continue because they believe it will help their chances in the election. They are also baiting Trump to Tweet about it and ultimately create a stand-off between federal and local force.

It will interesting to see what happens when an MLK statue gets torn down.

Really? Because it looks like about 10 posts in that you mocked the "law and order sect" for thinking that desecrating a cemetery full of dead priests was upsetting. So your commentary on the coverage of "old oppressors" is admittedly out of your ass, since you don't pay attention?

For someone old enough to remember Al Bundy, you have some growing up to do, if "law and order" is odious to you. Cemetery vandalized, just a bad apple. St. Patrick's Cathedral vandalized, it's only spray paint. Statue of an abolitionist goes into the lake, memorial to black regiment of the US Army is vandalized, oops. But to your sect, numerous cops being killed and assaulted in the wake of a "bad apple" killing George Floyd (and guaranteed getting the full brunt of the justice system for it) is OK.

Dude, spare the lecture about me and my “sect.” I was clearly responding to the statues which were being discussed and not the Catholic cemetary. Interesting to me that you have all this energy to call me out, but nothing for the hang em high comment, which by the way, very well may be happening in our country. That tells me all I need to know about you. I’m done with this discussion.

Sorry you lack the energy to remember what you said yesterday. I thought the comment was distasteful, and a poor attempt at humor, if you must know. Please link me to the stories of where this is happening in this country, or is that not high on your news story list?

So I was speaking with someone involved with the Gettysburg Foundation this weekend and he expressed concern about some unfortunate decisions (left hand not talking to right hand) that were made locally that could have some ugly outcomes this weekend. Apparently, the park is limiting visitors and as a result, drastically cut back on law enforcement/security, without realizing that the city had given four permits out for the weekend....Antifa, BLM, KKK and another wacko group. By the way, if you've been there, you would know there are hundreds of statues, memorials, etc. scattered about the park. Now the park is scrambling to find anyone to help with security. What could possibly go wrong?

If these scumbags try to tear down historical statues showing where different regiments took place in the battle on a graveyard of 50,000 men then shoot them on site. Gettysburg should be protected at all costs.
