A prized college basketball recruit was arrested Thursday in Southern California on five charges of assault with a deadly weapon.

Mikey Williams, a top recruit who committed to the University of Memphis, was taken into custody before being released on bail of $50,000 early Friday morning, the San Diego Sheriff’s Department confirmed to multiple outlets.

The incident occurred in late March, according to multiple outlets.

Records for the San Diego Sheriff’s Department — which does not release booking photos to the public — indicate an 18-year-old suspect named Michael Anthony Williams was booked into the San Diego Central Jail close to 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

According to the incident report released Friday, multiple people were asked to leave a residence, and as five people were driving away in one car, shots were fired.

The car was hit, but no one was hurt.

The charges levied against Williams carries a maximum sentence of up to four years in prison apiece.

Memphis is “aware of the situation and [is] gathering more information,” according to a statement obtained by ESPN.

His Instagram account, which had nearly four million followers around the time of his November commitment to Memphis, has since been deactivated.

Williams is due in court next Thursday, April 20.

Williams, a 6-foot-2 guard, is considered a four-star recruit, according to 247Sports.

He played for San Ysidro High School as a freshman before transferring to the Lake Norman Christian School in North Carolina.

Williams announced his return to San Ysidro for his senior year in April 2022.

Prior to that, he signed a historic footwear and apparel deal with Puma in October 2021.

No one wants Memphis in their conference. But they are soon to be the AAC’s flagship program.
