I mean, this is obviously the salient point of the article: A public school district that serves many underprivileged kids and without the resources to pay the most qualified people for the positions pursuant to its purpose -- education of the city's students -- finds a way to funnel an inordinate amount of money to pay someone it simply wants to restore its boys' basketball team to prominence, and disguises it as some expanded role with some higher purpose. It's a role that exists in many places under various names, but usually for half the cost, but of course Rice -- who is steeped in a culture that waaaaay overvalues coaches -- won't do the job (coaching; the other thing is a sham) for less than $150,000 a year, which is obviously more than any college program is willing to shell out for him.
Disgraceful. But of course it is. Not that anything matters anymore.
