Monsignor Joseph R. Reilly

Thread title has been changed by Admin from Hank to Msgr Reilly

Not sure their reason but the point of my post was about Hank role in all these issues
Absolutely part and parcel to the story.

Three sides to every story but hard to extricate Hank and the BOR from this mess.

Can't say you are wrong but a minor issue, Hank's hands are still all over this.
The post was intended to be about Hank. Even Carino article makes a reference to Hank in all this and basketball team mess.

There should be aSeparate thread on Riley but this one should be about Hank

The title was changed to better represent the content.

I also added the link to Jerry's story in your post to ensure details.

Finally, I left your full comments in the post including your mention of Hank.

Anyone reading the article will then decide who is responsible and what should be done.

This is really disappointing and disturbing to read about this and how this was either missed or swept under the carpet. On the heels of the embezzlement issue and Nyre debacle, changes need to happen and quickly. No excuses.

As much as the play of the team has been frustrating, roster, NIL, Sha’s coaching this year all pale in comparison. Ironic that many point to Felt as the culprit but we have much bigger issues.

Posted on politico and amplified by JC so it has to be true.

I’ll take Hank’s word.

The issue isn’t Felt, but rather his direct boss, he handcuffs him and doesn't give him latitude, he still thinks he's the AD. Additionally, Hank acts as though he’s both Athletic Director and president, given his status as one of the top donors. The board members who aren’t aligned with Hank had concerns about Reilly, but Hank pushed his appointment through. We had two other highly qualified candidates, including an SHU alum, but Reilly was allegedly considered the strongest option.

Are you at liberty to say who other candidates were?

This is not about "the Catholic Church." Such a despicable character assasination attempt is almost certainly coming from within the Church itself.

There is an extremely dirty civil war in the Church right now that is playing itself out in planted disinformation pieces published by unscrupulous media outlets. Politico, and especially due to the political agenda of its German parent Axel Springer, fits the bill.

I would seriously question whether this hit piece was planted by Opus Dei partisans seeking to undermine the Pope's allies in the United States (eg Tobin, Checchio). For those who haven't been following Church affairs, the Pope has moving towards a virtual suppression of Opus Dei. Going back to the played out "McCarrick well" one more time to throw grenades from the shadows would be par for the course for the "Holy Mafia" (think the likes of Steve Bannon, Roger Stone, etc.):

Your theory is outlandish

A revealing error in the Politico article - it says Reilly became President "in recent weeks."

But actually he was named President on April 24 and formally assumed office on July 1. This means that this hit piece was on the shelf for 6 months before suddenly being released this morning - 7am on a Saturday that begins the Christmas week break. Why?

"Less than three years after he stepped aside, Seton Hall has decided to ignore those findings, restoring Reilly to active service and, in recent weeks, formally elevating him to the most powerful position possible: university president."

funny you mention Felt here. the Felt thread is locked. and my post asking why the Felt thread was locked got DELETED. there was nothing wrong with it other then people saying he was doing a bad job.

some more censorship going on in the seton hall community i see

I always had you pegged as Opus Dei, Father. May the true peace of Christ find you and redeem you.
I'm not a fan of Opus Dei in general, not the saint or the spirituality but the actual members of the group.

The conservatives in the church are not known for dirty tricks.

Pope Francis has a credible accusation of sexual abuse against him. That has been swept under the rug. Most are too scared to speak about this or criticize him in any way because he is so dictatorial and vindictive. His pontificate has been a reign of terror.

So I doubt the hit job on Msgr Reilly is part of any vast right wing conspiracy.

Not that I disagree but curious what has Felt tried to do that Lyons has stopped? Our basketball Program is sinking as is the reputation of our University as a whole. The Lyons/Willard years feel like the Golden Age right now but would like to know if anyone in power can help lead us out of our current hole.

Reilly's hire always seemed like a way for the BOR to push through a guy they can control. Now even moreso.

Monsignor Reilly is a fine and decent Person/Priest. He has inherited problems created by those whom determined that rather than be transparent and act as adults , it is better to sweep matters under the rug . I do not believe he will be controlled and he should be given a chance .

I don't know him but most who have have similar good things to say about him personally. I agree he's inherited an absolute dumpster-fire. The accusations against him seem like he was in an impossible situation. When your boss is a monster and protected by many even more powerful, it leaves you in a no win situation.

That said, even if he's cleared of this situation, is he qualified to be the President of the school knowing what a mess things are right now?

If there is one institution that should have learned that whatever misdeeds you try to hid under a rug they’ll eventually come out into the public’s eye and that black eye will only get worst. As I’ve said in other posts for Seton Hall to prosper it needs the right person running the ship and not accept or tolerate unacceptable and unethical behavior,

I believe he is qualified

I could not agree more hallgrad80 and I believe That Monsignor understands and will step up.

They all should resign in shame for appointing someone with these questions in his background that were so well known to them. There's absolutely no excuse for someone with his past associations and failures to act as described in the article to be in a position of any consequence. Frankly, the Catholic Church continuously proves itself to be an evil institution in need of being completely burned down and

In defense of the BOR: they were likely forced by the diocese into this hire due to the ynfolding circumstances that led to the job opening

That being said the BOR needs new blood as we hit our 3rd major headline in the last few years for all the wrong reasons
Ah, the diocese, the very entity who would have been complicit in, and guilty of, taking a blind eye to the sexual abuse. Now I get it.

lol

Look, I’m a twice graduate of Seton Hall, but after the Spotlight investigation, and results, I’ve dis-associated myself with the Catholic Church.

I still support my “Alma mater” sports teams, but am no longer tied to the school otherwise.

The Catholic Church, to me, committed a crime that is unforgivable. And as an attendee of Catholic schools from kindergarten thru college, that is reprehensible.

The fact Seton Hall is Diocesan owned to my mind, is the biggest reason for its low giving rate, endowment and Alumni engagement. The Jesuit, Augustinian institutions, etc ... generate a sense of pride and ownership in their students and alumni, fostering a greater connection and thereby support.

Hallwins : I agree with your view that being a Diocesan university brings certain negatives with it including the ones you listed . There is one important one that I would add and that is that it lends itself to getting the University caught up iin Diocesan politics and adds another layer of bureaucracy that has to,be satisfied and that layer might not have the university best interests as its top priority.

Really disappointing that the BoRs didn’t see this situation or chose to ignore it and go ahead with appointing Reilly. Also interesting to note that current Pope Francis reportedly was in on not reporting or choosing to ignore Sexual Abuse under his watch earlier in his Priesthood.

Unfortunately, probably hard to find any Catholic Priest who was ordained 20+ years ago to not have some type of connection to Sexual Abuse directly or indirectly.
