More Twitter chatter about a possible Biig East ACC merger

It's hard to see how the math would work on this, but this would be the best of all possible worlds for Connecticut provided that we get a full share (which isn't a certainty.)

• We get to keep local basketball games against teams we care about.
• We get additional basketball games against quality, basketball teams.
• We get access to a P4 conference and along with that access to the college football playoff.

Again, I doubt it's happening, but I'm curious to hear what you guys think? Would you be in favor of it or not?

To me this is just history repeating itself. If it needs to go down this road then I would first suggest combining conference tournaments first. See how much money you can make from that. March 1st you start the new Big East/ACC tournament. Regular season start December 1st and ends Feb 28th.

Scheduling will be interesting. I still like the BE format of playing a home and away game but football is making all the decisions. For Seton Hall we just have to hope we can compete and aren't left out.

Nothing is assured. If this happened, it probably is more likely to survive the longer haul than the BE by itself. And survival in a major conference is critical to us. So yes, I am for it. I was for Uconn coming back for the same reason, to make the BE better, stronger and more likely to survive.

I remember the bad old days. I remember going to a favorite watering hole in the mid 80s before we really got it going, to watch the early BE games. Some Cuse fans were there. I dont remember if we were playimg them, but I was there and I was loudly cheering for us. Some Cuse J O comes up to me after the game and said I was the first SHU fan he saw in a NYC bar loudly cheering for SHU. He was lucky I didnt yet have my two Elizabeth body guards, prof Ed and Mike!!! But even in those days, even when we were so over-matched, we were wiith the big boys. And that was so much better than hoping we beat St Pete's in he rivalry game.

Clemson and Florida State would not be involved in any of this, rendering any football money very small.

Under the current landscape it will definitely tough for the basketball only schools to survive . Then again, the current landscape is not sustainable for 80% of the schools in the NCAA or the media networks. The last time I actually watched a commercial was during the Super Bowl.

I’m not anywhere near as informed as others about whether these conference realignment scenarios make sense financially, given the current state of college hoops, and based on other factors. I loved the old Big East, and liked/like the subsequent iterations though not as much.

What I have read though is that Coach K, Pitino and Hurley all seem to support creating a bigger basketball league. Those guys are all traditionalists in some sense, so that tells me they must think it’s needed. If guys like that support it, I think it’s probably the best move.

Another factor is that there was a time not long ago when if you were a BE team with 20+ wins, a winning conference record and at least a few good Ws within and outside the league, you were probably a lock to dance.

Well last year we only got 3 teams in the dance despite 3 others (us, SJU and Providence) that met the above criteria.

This year we will get 4, but there will be at least one and probably 2 that fit the above criteria and don’t make the dance.

In some of these bigger leagues, there is so much opportunity to get good resume building wins in the league. So you have some margin for error. I think a bigger league will help on that front in addition to the finances.

Right now getting NIL money is a much bigger issue for Seton Hall. What good is merger if we can’t compete for high end players?? Tell me though, what is the margin for error this signing period?

What makes you think SHU would be getting any of that money?

Unless there is an absolute guarantee that every team in the BE and ACC is guaranteed a spot in this newly formed conference I would be very cautious about how this will all play out.

Reading the accounts in the Florida papers about the lawsuit filed by Florida State it appears the ACC might be in trouble. So far lot of home court rulings for State by the judge in Tallahassee.
