Last night I went to my first Knick game and NBA basketball game in quite sometime. My good friend, fellow Seton Hall alum, and the person that I have been going to most Seton Hall games in the past few years, had obtained the tickets from his daughter, whose company has a very nice suite box in MSG. I was intrigued to see the game as I have not even watched for even more than a few minutes, a played NBA game in at least 15 years. This despite the fact that back in the early 1970s when I was in high school, I was a very big Knick fan. Once I attended college and started following SHU basketball, my interest in the pro game really dropped off of my radar screen. After seeing last night's game, I came to the conclusion, I have really not missed much in terms of my personal entertainment value by not following the NBA.
There is no question in my mind that the athletic ability of the players is amazing. Their shot making and quickness skills are second to none. The size of the average player in terms of girth and height is superior to the average college player. But the overall team concept, both from the offensive and defensive end, is extremely lacking. There is just too much one on one play. Also there were so many shots taken by players on both sides, that if they were done on the college level, would have found that player with the next stoppage of play firmly seated on the bench. Instead those players just continued to fire away. I actually thought for awhile, I was witnessing a very unstructured all American high school all-star game. Based on what I saw last night, it will be quite some time, even with complimentary tickets, that I will be attending another Knick game again.
I would be interested in hearing the feelings of other posters on this subject as well. GO PIRATES!
