New Commit: Stephon Payne III

In addition to Indiana, Payne told Bass that he’s also heard from Louisville, LSU, Oklahoma, Nevada, Charleston and Virginia Tech since entering the transfer portal.
-----
Payne was among the best offensive rebounders in the country last season, according to KenPom.com. He ranked 32nd nationally in offensive rebounding percentage at 14.2. In ASUN play, his offensive rebounding percentage of 15.9 ranked second in the league.

He was also fifth in the ASUN in block percentage and fourth in the conference in steal percentage.

Over 91 career games between Jacksonville and Incarnate Word, Payne averages 7.2 points, 5.7 rebounds and one block in 20.7 minutes per game. He’s made 64 career starts and is a career 50.9 percent shooter from the field.

478th by EvanMiya. Good rebounder both offensively and defensively. Aggressive defender with good Block and Steal rates. Offensive game is limited to rim-running, offensive putbacks and dump offs from guards at the rim. Poor post game. He moves well so hopefully he can be effective in Sha's hedging defense. Will have trouble with the bigger, more physical bigs. Overall looks like a potential platoon player at the 5.

Saving all the money for boogie and a post player….. I guess you can spend money on a 4 star high school recruit who didn’t do anything their freshman year or spend money on a decent player who played ok in bad MM leagues.. wonder what the strategy will be next off season

I actually saw Jacksonville and this kid play live last year against Queens U. They were fun to watch as both teams like to go up and down. Jax was a guard-dominant team and I actually would've loved to have their lefty PG (transferred from Wake to Jax), but this kid did alright. Queens center was a 5th year Gtown transfer, 7' 1" Malcolm WIlson).

We need size. We need size that’s not going to drift around the perimeter shooting 3s. We need size that can rebound. This is a good pick up.
Hope so, but I don't know how I can conclude that based on the school he's coming from, the conference, and where he is ranked by people who follow the portal. It is one thing to believe that a kid rated 105 has the potential to end up like a top 50 portal add. It is another thing when the kid is rated 4-7-8.

I also still don't get how we got 2 pickups in 2 days, with the other we have on board, if folks are correct about us not committing the "rev share" pot towards players. How exactly are we entering into agreements with these kids then? What has changed? Or is the price tag that low in this seemingly inflated market that it is still all within collective dollars.

Hard to find a Kid that has not taken a 3 (fool's gold ) in 3 years --also nearly 65% from Free Throw line.

Hard to argue with you but look at Walter Clayton Jr. Went from Iona to the best player in this year's tournament.

With all due respect, this is the pool we’re fishing in. This is a good pickup. How will it pan out? Who knows but he has done things we need, albeit at a lower level.

I don’t know either. Maybe kids at this level are realizing that most of the big money has now been spent by other programs on better players and that they had better look at their options realistically.

It seems our portal strategy is the same as last year ie recruit people who we've never heard of.I guess we've learned nothing from this seasons disaster. My guess is that Sha is working with a budget funded by the collectives and Pirate Blue. The University is sitting on the rest until the House settlement is 100% approved. That conservative thinking will result in another awful season.

Do you honestly expect answers to those questions? Not in a million years.

He looks like an average to slightly above average player but he’s much better than what we had last year. Hope he has a great year. Right now we have a roster that’s on a path to nowhere.

I don't know what's going on but every pickup I look at and say to myself "oh great that is a nice 10/11/12th guy for the roster"

Tubek goes to UTEP and we replace him with this guy. I guess. Who the hell knows anymore.
Tubek did nothing here outside of one game, when the program was dying for an athletic shooter. I will take this trade if you want to frame it that way.

Agreed. But him and Jenkins were both highly sought after as transfers when Pitino left because they played awesome under him and you could project how they would make the jump. Clayton was considered a very good get for Florida when he went there and Jenkins was Pitino’s best player year 1. Those guys were pretty sought after transfers.

But to your point sometimes kids get overlooked in the portal no different than recruiting. So maybe we catch lightning in a bottle with this kid.

Staring to think Sha is still looking to spread his money fairly evenly and wants to play 10 guys. Was hoping for 1 or 2 alpha types for 7 figures but he either doesn't want to spend his budget like that or we don't have the budget we think we do.

if this is the strategy then it's the same as last year and thats a major red flag on Sha.

but if these guys are just bench , and he spends the large outstanding purse on a few alphas then you'll get what you want. and thats still very much possible. its may 1st.
