NIL - BE #

It is no secret we are behind on NIL. The Board has discussed this ad nauseam. Between the lack of emphasis + fundraising for the practice facility, we are a victim of timing and lack of foresight by the powers that be. I think most people will need to get comfortable with the reality that SHU will need a few years to build out a sustainable NIL program (it is encouraging to see the wheels in motion). However, until then, we will be outbid for recruits and need to trust Sha to find under-the-radar guys that can (hopefully) be coached up. But then again, this has always been the way at Seton Hall, so, while everything has changed, nothing has changed.

How great would it be to win with recruits like this? Would be very difficult but no way Seton Hall is ever coming close to $3 million a year in NIL.
Didn’t we see that to a degree last year with various teams? I can’t imagine either San Diego State or FAU’s rosters having anywhere near that figure in NIL.

I look at the Tampa Bay Rays for inspiration. They have proven you can compete with the big boys with an eye for inexpensive talent & great player development.
Baseball has rules preventing rampant Free Agency until you have 6 years in the Majors! NCAA does not. But I do agree with the sentiment that we need to be innovative and find other ways to win. Not generally a strong point of our conservative leadership.

Big difference is there is contracts in pro sports. Even if you have the best eye for talent they are free agents every year. Good luck retaining.

The “coach up” model does not work with unlimited free agency.

We don't need to have a $3M budget to succeed. But we do need leadership, organization, communication and teamwork. We'll always be behind our competitors in budget but theres no reason we can't have a respectable, competitive budget.

Embrace being the underdog and outwork our opponents on the court and off the court. Right now we are clearly getting our heads handed to us in all ways regarding NIL.

I would think we need at least 1 million a year to stay competitive if not we are done.

In my opinion people often draw false comparisons to non-power conference programs. "If [school name] can do it with no NIL, why can't seton hall!"

Well, the big difference is they play in a league against teams with similar payrolls. Anyone can catch lightning in a bottle for a game or two in the tournament, but to do that over a 20 game conference schedule year over year is wildly unrealistic.

There is some good news though.... with virtually zero marketing or promotion outside of a 30 second Instagram post, Hall Ball events has raised $260K in four months.

One would think with a more coordinated effort/improved leadership we could significantly improve that number.

I spoke to Mike McBride yesterday and asked him to send me a brief summary. Info that will be detailed in less than 3 weeks at the Beefsteak.

Here's his message....

From Mike....

Dan,

great speaking with you this morning and thanks again for all the hard work that goes into running Pirate Crew. As mentioned on the call, we are in daily contact with alumni, donors, and supporters of our NIL programming. The spirit and feedback in those conversations have been very positive. We have been and will continue to be focused on delivering the year’s largest NIL fundraiser, the Hall Ball Beefsteak Tipoff Dinner, and successfully closing out the Match Campaign. There has been a ton of activity mapping our NIL strategy with Hall Ball and Hall Hands on Deck and there will be many opportunities for everyone to participate in supporting NIL.

Please be patient and understand all will be revealed in three weeks.

Would be refreshing and silence a lot of hysteria. I hope it’s this season then can worry about how to keep them together next spring, lol.

I think the one thing that has been consistently said is don't trust any of the numbers you are hearing/reading about. Reality is Nova no longer has Wright, so whatever amount of money they have, they won't be anywhere near as good as Wright's teams.

I mean its a high bar that he set lol. But, Nova isnt going to be left in the dust. Hoops is too important to the school and community and leaders will do everything they can to ensure the best people and structure is in place to be a successful program.

More nothing from him

FB recruits asking $5k just to visit campus. If this is also happening with BB recruits, how do we not go all in on International recruiting?

"Penn State football coach James Franklin confirmed testimony last week by Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith that it has become common for prospective athletes to ask for $5,000 to visit a college’s campus."

The average fan doesn’t understand how dark the underbelly of the recruiting world can be. Payment in exchange for access to players has been part of college basketball for a long time.

Sha isn't going to throw money at players regardless of how much is available. I still feel that $1.5M gets it done.
That's the number being thrown around Mike. But just a few months ago we were hearing $1M and now word is Nova $3-4M and St John's near $3M, two close Big East rivals members have much higher numbers at their disposal and I wonder if $1.5M will get the job done.

BTW, a past SHU assistant coach off the record noted in the early summer that $1.5M was the minimum needed by the Hall.

What a mess NIL has turned into!

$1.5 is a competitive budget. You’re not getting blue chip transfers or high school recruits with that, but you can field a competitive team.

$2M-$3m is the reported number needed to field a team capable of competing for a Big East championship.

It’s a war chest, it’s not a goal these real programs have it’s going for more and more.

A couple of things to note:

- Seton Hall has always operated at a financial disadvantage to other universities and has managed to be very competitive.

- Everyone is underestimating the chemistry problems that will happen for teams where money is the main motivator. Nova and SJU can have the blue chip that demands $300K and doesn't care about the university or his teammates. Sha will do fine with hardworking, physical and athletic players who'll take $100K - $150K.

- SJU has a sugar daddy and will most likely always have more money. Many schools have done a great job out of the gate, but won't be able to lean on the same generous donors year in and year out. They'll shoot their load in year one and find that the money isn't flowing as easily.

The negativity on these threads is draining. The season hasn't started yet and many are writing it off already.

Being at half of what the top teams in your own league nevertheless the country is a big problem. Is Sha that much better of a coach than all the other coaches in the league to overcome that? What’s the number for this upcoming year? It has to be more than $1.5 million because each year the money goes higher.

This year teams have 3-4 million... Next year? 3.5-4.5... The year after? 4-5 million.

It’s so much more than this, your point one is an excuse to allow for mediocre leaders.

You need money to build chemistry

The third point is similar to excuse one

How come we can’t point out shortcomings without being told that we are the problem, I see a ton of negativity in your post because it pushes the woe is us mentality

NIL presents similar issues that professional teams face from managing elite athletes and high salaries.

The MLB teams with the 3 highest salaries will be watching the playoffs from their comfy couches this season.

The two best teams in MLB are Atlanta and Baltimore. Atlanta spends 60% and 74% of what the Mets and Yankees spend. Baltimore spends 20% and 25% of what the Mets and Yanks spend.

Sha is the kind of coach who can do well on 50% of what other teams spend, Seton Hall has done it forever with decent results.

There's no doubt that we are late out of the gate and the lack of information feeds the negativity. I've been one of the biggest critics regarding the lack of information, but I have the advantage of knowing what's going on behind the scenes. SHU will present the new NIL entity within 3 weeks and the only thing that can hold us back is the fans/alumni willingness to support.
