OBJ to Browns

If the front office believes the team is this far off, they should have just drafted a QB last year. They wasted a year of the rebuild.

I’m a Giants fan and I like the trade. Maybe they could’ve gotten more, but Beckham has so much baggage and is a distraction.

Build the team around Barkley and Haskins.

Beckham’s played 12 games in two years plus the headaches, yeah he’s a great talent but the Giants can do without the headaches

2018 offseason the worst in Giants history? Gotta be near the top of the list.

Completely whiff on your evaluation of the roster, give Beckham a massive contract, take a RB with the 2nd pick, bring back a 37 year old QB, go into the season with a starting RG and RT that aren’t even on the roster by week 8.

Now here we are a year later and they’ve gotta tear the whole thing down. Lose Collins for nothing, trade Beckham, and still have Eli penciled in as the opening day starter. Barkley went from being the final piece of the puzzle to the only Pro Bowl caliber player on the roster.

What a poorly run organization. At least they finally realized it’s time to hit the reset button. It’s too bad it took them a year longer than everyone else.

WR D.K. Metcafe wowed at the combine. Any chance the Giants try to replace OBJ right away? Hard to picture Shepard as the No. 1 WR.

Metcalfe wowed until he had to do the agility drills, then he bombed. Imo, the Giants have FAR bigger needs then wr. Take your chances on Sheppard, Engram, and Barkley spearheading the offense

But how is paying Eli 23 million again hitting the reset button? Having a top 3 wide receiver on the team was not a problem. That was an asset and they just sold it for 50 cents on the dollar.

Spot on about whiffing on the roster evaluation. Just over a year ago Gettlemen was saying that all you had to do was fix the OL and he could not even do that. Have to address the future QB now. A Lauletta or Nassib in a later round is just not going to cut it now. Could have been resetting now with a QB in place. Daniel Jones handing the ball to Barkley after this since Shepard will be a FA?

I’m with you and that’s why I included having Eli still on the roster as another mistake they’ve made over the last year. I guess part of me is holding out hope that they find a way to either move on from Eli or restructure his deal and take a QB in the draft. Not sure when his roster bonus was or if it passed though, so it may not even be an option at this point.

They’re a clueless organization right now and one of the worst in football at the moment.

None of this makes sense to me. At 17 the best rated pass rushers are gone and the 2 highest rated QBs are gone. They just about had their pick of all the QBs last year and would have had the pick of the best defensive players this year, but now they are stuck on the outside looking in at 6 & 17. The best tackles will be gone by 17 for sure.

17 and 6 is enough to get up to 2 if they love Haskins and think they need to go up.

The 3rd may be enough for Rosen?

With Barkley, Shepard, Engram, a much-improved lime and defense, all hope isn’t lost because OBJ is gone.

Yikes giving that up for Haskins with all the holes still? Eli is off the books after this year and no dead cap money for Vernon this year or the G just traded for after this year? Now they take on 9M of dead money for this year for OBJ.

If Gettlemen has a plan it seems like a moving target.

Not sure what gives you such confidence in Shepard and Engram as neither was very good or consistent last year.

Seems like they will have to run Barkley into the ground... guy might get 450 touches next year...my Lord...

The other poster hit the nail on the head re the front office, why not trade Collins at the deadline and why give OBJ that extension? It seems like the don’t have a unified direction they want to go

I doubt they do. They haven’t for years. That’s why McAdoo became coach with Tom Coughlin’s staff or why Eli’s streak was ended for freaking Geno Smith.

I don’t have a problem w/Giants trading OBJ but a mid first round pick, a pick in the nineties, and an average safety was clearly not enough. What exactly are the Giants doing? Let Collins walk for nothing, trade OBJ, but then sign a 35 year old in Antione Bethea. Now their #1 WR is Shepherd who had a terrible year last season. Just put 10 in the box and stuff Barkley will be everyone’s game plan vs. the Giants now. I have no idea if they are rebuilding or not. They should but doesn’t seem like it to me. Just a disaster all the way around.

I agree, not a horrible idea to trade him and free up cash and look to the future but should have gotten more for him (he is a legit top 5 wr in the NFL still in his prime) and certainly get something for a pro-bowl safety in his prime, if he wasn’t a stud safety the skins wouldn’t have signed him to an insane deal.

For Collins, they could have signed him for less than the skins signed him for (bc they could have used the franchise tag as a negotiating tool) and traded him to the skins for at least at 3rd round pick.

For OBJ, a mid round first round pick is not enough with a 3rd rd and a ok safety. I would have either tried to get an earlier first rounder, or a first and 2nd and maybe a 2020 2nd or 3rd. Should have gotten more but maybe something changed and they got desperate.

Eitherway the optics don't look good on this firesale the Giants are going through. I'm so glad I'm not a season ticket holder!

Trading him still costs them $15 million towards the cap this year. Helps them in the future but that's a hell of a lot of money to lose on a player they just signed.

I have loved the Barkley pick since they made it last year. However, if this is the direction they are going, it looks even dumber now that they didn’t draft a QB last year. I’m really hoping they don’t package 6/17 to move up to get Haskins or Murray. Unless they are generational talents, which most experts don’t believe, seems like an odd move.

Now if they can get Haskins at 6 or even trade a 3 for Rosen (assuming he is actually good) then maybe this makes some sense?

Still just bizarre they lose Collins for nothing instead of trading him at the deadline last year and traded OBJ AFTER signing the huge deal, paying him 20+ for 1 year and having 16mm dead space this year...

WTH?

I agree on the timing of OBJ and Collins. Tells me one thing: locker room.

Not a huge football fan, save my sports love for SHU and my beloved Mets, but what I think is this is a tank year. They go offensive line and defense with their 2 first rounders and then tank the season to get one of the 2 huge QBs coming out next year, I think Tua from Alabama and the kid from Clemson maybe coming out next year. #tankfortua

I don't disagree with that idea, but it's a really tough ask to have your fan base support you as you head towards your 6th losing season in the last 7 years. I also don't trust anyone in this organization to oversee a rebuild. Kudos to @TomD82 . You've been killing Mara for years and suggested he was just as culpable as Reese. Looks like you were spot on.

You don’t move a player like this without Mara. Or maybe Mara pushed it?

It’s clear that Mara is clueless. Gettleman has only been a slight upgrade over Reese so far and Reese set the bar very low.

If OBJ was a locker room problem I could believe that but his teammates say different. The real problem is how bad the Giants offense has been without OBJ. They better somehow find a solid receiver too or they will never hear the end of it. Gettleman has done as bad of a job managing the cap in the short term as you can do because of their thoughts that they can win now. It appears that view is changing making all his previous moves look even worse. They seem like an organization without direction.

No I think Mara had to give his approval, but this is an organization without a plan, or at least a consistent and acceptable plan. Mara is the one who’s supposed to be overseeing it all.

This has been a bad franchise for a while now. Mara is the only constant when it comes to the decision making throughout the franchise.

The Clemson QB was a freshman this year, so he’s 2 years away from the draft right?

Ultimately we’ll find out in September, but I agree it looks all over the map.

OBJ is a PITA for an organization. He wasn’t going to change, so why sign him and take the cap hit?

At least he got two 1’s for him. Peppers is very good.

If in fact they want Trevor Lawrence and are willing to wait two more years, then grabbing Rosen now seems like the best thing to do and dumping Eli. But so far Gettleman's plan and "the long-term" don't really match up so I'd be surprised that they would target Lawrence right now.

Best thing I ever did was get rid of my season tickets when they went to the new shi&hole MetLife stadium. I cannot tell you what a great decision that was for me and it kept me up at night thinking about it.

Eli Manning now should follow Odell Beckham out Giants door

The Giants lost for five seasons with Odell Beckham Jr., and they can — and will — lose now without him.

But they wuz robbed.

And because the Giants are in full-blown rebuilding mode, they should now think long and hard about saying goodbye to Eli Manning.

Dave Gettleman must now draft Dwayne Haskins or trade for Josh Rosen and get a young franchise quarterback on the field sooner rather than later.

The return from the Browns — the 17th pick of the NFL draft, a third-rounder and safety Jabrill Peppers— wasn’t enough, of course. It never is for this kind of talent.

Nothing short of two No. 1s should have been acceptable for Gettleman and the Giants for a transcendent receiver in his prime.

Beckham apparently wasn’t all-in as a Giant, wasn’t happy in New York, grew tired of the losing, and Gettleman and Pat Shurmur decided they no longer wanted him to be a Giant.

One year after breaking the bank to keep him a Giant.

But still. Did they think he’d be that much of a distraction to give up on him?

“At this point I have no idea what to think,” Beckham told Kim Jones of NFL Network. “I’m trying to process it right now.”

He’s no doubt processing what it will be like playing with former LSU teammate Jarvis Landry.

“Bittersweet,” Beckham said. “It is what it is. It’s life.”

It is Saquon Barkley’s show now, and he better be prepared for an army of eight-man boxes.

And here we thought the end of the Jerry Reese-Ben McAdoo Era was rock bottom.

No. This is rock bottom.

First, Landon Collins walking out the door for nothing.

Now this.

A rebuilding team with a 38-year-old quarterback. Beautiful.

Remember Gettleman telling us you don’t give up on talent when he signed Beckham to his $90 million deal only a year ago?

Well, a year later, he gave up on arguably the biggest talent the Giants have had since Lawrence Taylor, even if Barkley appears headed to be included in that argument.

Ownership, which signed off in this, of course, must be tickled that for Beckham’s 12 games in 2018, $16 million in dead money has been left on the Giants’ 2019 cap while freeing up $5 million.

Beckham will enjoy catching passes from Baker Mayfield a lot more than he did catching them from Manning, that we know.

“I see the Browns trying to win a Super Bowl,” former Giants running back Rashad Jennings tweeted.

The Giants have no shot at the playoffs, much less a Super Bowl, with all the holes they have on their once-proud defense and Manning minus his most electrifying aerial weapon.

It is why Gettleman should have another no-holds barred conversation with Manning, and the two should mutually decide that it would be in the best interest of both parties to part ways.

Gettleman could sure use the $17 million savings for his rebuild.

But he would probably be hung in effigy by all the Manning loyalists if he pulled the plug on him.

Odell Beckham's first words after stunning Giants-Browns trade

Manning, for 15 seasons The Pride of the Giants, deserves better than the worst kind of ending to a Hall of Fame career — Giants fans savaging him with boos during another depressing slog to nowhere.

How is the Kansas City model — rookie quarterback sitting behind a struggling Manning until he is deemed ready a la Patrick Mahomes sitting behind Alex Smith — supposed to work when the mob begins chanting early and often for the rookie?

And unfortunately for the next Giants franchise quarterback — whoever he is and whenever he arrives — he won’t get to throw to Beckham.

Shurmur labored long and hard to enlist Beckham as an ally, but it didn’t stick (see Lil Wayne interview … see Paris video … see hole in the Lambeau wall one week after That Boat Trip, see Stupid Pet Trick in the Linc end zone).

Gettleman had to be thinking: Beckham turns 27 in November. Unless he were to stay healthy and enjoy an historic season, it might not be as easy to trade him before the season in which he would turn 28 in November.

Beckham’s Dance Fever act was popular in the locker room. His work ethic was impeccable. Gettleman didn’t sign him to trade him, and reserved the right to change his mind.

Beckham made That Catch in prime time against the Cowboys and became an icon. He was a thrill and a joy to watch. He was made for New York.

Now he’s made for Cleveland.

Giants fans today: Oh, Hell.

I just hope they either sit tight at 6, or explore trading back to collect more picks. I like Haskins, but I’d hate to see them move up for him

One of my friends has a way with words. His quotes on the situation:

OBJ - classless ah*le
Mara - clueless sperm lottery winner
Gettleman - incompetent football dinosaur

Have to give him kudos for his take on the situation.

Well... Gettleman has never once traded down in a draft, only up. Last year it was reported that he never even listened to offers for the 2 pick to move down, which if true is crazy.

What the Giants should have been doing in the trades they've made to date is add picks for the 2020 draft which would give them additional draft capital to use in that QB rich class.
