But none of it matters anymore, which is why we need Rev share plus a collective to competitive. Some of these kids are lucky just to have a scholarship, much less get paid, for what little they contribute on the court.

According to some here, they should be happy to play for free. How much would you ask for to be called a PAB and screamed at "What the F is wrong with you???"
Okorafor was from the Dollar Tree. Before they raised their prices to $1.25.
He's got raw talent and we would have been wise to keep him. Doubt we will get anyone with his size/bench ability at the same price this go round.Okorafor was from the Dollar Tree. Before they raised their prices to $1.25.
No he was not. What he asked for was absolutely outrageous. There is not a person on this board that would have given him anywhere close to his asking price.Well, this guy is available:
6' 10", 230. He's likely to be pretty reasonable in NIL ask too.Youssouf Singare - Men's Basketball - University of Connecticut Athletics

He actually showed promise in limited minutes.
Wow, I had no idea! I hope he's not getting bad advice (though it sounds like he is.)No he was not. What he asked for was absolutely outrageous. There is not a person on this board that would have given him anywhere close to his asking price.
Since Capt. Bob brought this up...... after watching the Louisville and Wisconsin NCAA tournament teams, and watching us this past season, I've wondered if Okafor and Gus were really walk-ons at those schools, and Shaheen/staff got hoodwinked. Some of these kids are lucky just to have a scholarship, much less get paid, for what little they contribute on the court.

No way. That's silly.Since Capt. Bob brought this up...... after watching the Louisville and Wisconsin NCAA tournament teams, and watching us this past season, I've wondered if Okafor and Gus were really walk-ons at those schools, and Shaheen/staff got hoodwinked.
Unfortunately Sha did not give him really enough playing time for him to grow as a Pirate. Woefully underused. His enthusiasm and energy alone should have earned him much more playing time. Sha should have seen how much the fans loved Gus and wanted to see more of him but he missed the memo.GUS YALDEN

Gard on Yalden:
"We are very excited to add Gus to our program. We first saw Gus as a young player at our summer camps and it has been a long, exciting recruiting process to now finally call him a Badger. He grew up idolizing many former Badgers, he understands what it means to wear the Cardinal and White and takes pride in that. He is well traveled and has challenged himself both academically and athletically in high school so that he is well prepared to thrive here at Wisconsin. Gus plays the game with a lot of enthusiasm and passion and our fans will absolutely love watching him compete in a Badger uniform. He has the size and strength to be a force around the rim, while combining that with a point-guard like feel on the perimeter to make him a very unique and talented player. We are excited to welcome Gus back home to his Wisconsin roots and we can't wait to help him reach his dreams and goals as a Badger."
BIO: Four-star big man Gus Yalden, a native of Appleton, Wisconsin, returns home to play for his home state Badgers. The 6-foot-9 forward ranks as a top-100 recruit in the country, according to 247 Sports. This past summer, he competed at the prestigious Nike Peach Jam in July, during which he put up a 35-point (70% FG), 17-rebound performance and showcased himself as one of the best bigs in the country. Yalden will play basketball his senior season at La Lumiere in LaPorte, Indiana, one of the top high school basketball programs in the country. Yalden spent his junior season at Asheville High School in Asheville, North Carolina, where he averaged 17 points and seven rebounds per game.
We'll just have to agree to disagree on this one. By a wide margin. He's got raw talent and we would have been wise to keep him. Doubt we will get anyone with his size/bench ability at the same price this go round.
I don't know about the shape he was in. I guess if you have lots of energy and enthusiasm then you must not be in great shape? He looked fine to me but if he was not in great shape and the rest of the team was then being in great shape did not matter based on the results. No doubt the ankle injury & summer mono slowed Gus down at the start of the season. Unfortunately he was still not in great shape at the end of the season. No excuse for that.
There is an argument that Okorafor just wanted to get away from SHU --an easy way to do so is ask for mega-money and enter the Portal. A means of saving face and getting away from a not enjoyable situation. Okorafor never seemed to enjoy being on the Team nor being yelled at when he did play. Probably better for all that he entered portal by requesting a ton from SHU rather than indicating he would negotiate .Wow, I had no idea! I hope he's not getting bad advice (though it sounds like he is.)
Not anything more than an end of bench player in BE at this point, in the old college basketball world he might have improved each year and been decent player by Jr/Sr year. I think will do well at Vermont.I don't know about the shape he was in. I guess if you have lots of energy and enthusiasm then you must not be in great shape? Geez, HallLine: Did you see Louisville and Wisconsin this year? Did you see their performances with us? (I know you did.)No way. That's silly.
Of course I did. They were both quite bad. But of course any suggestion that these guys were walkons at their previous schools is silly.Geez, HallLine: Did you see Louisville and Wisconsin this year? Did you see their performances with us? (I know you did.)

That belly needs some work to compete in the BESeems Gus was coming off an ankle injury & a summer bout with mono. I would have liked to have seen him get more court time but he fell behind early & never got the chance. He'll probably do well at Vermont.
LOL. If he looked fine to you I can only imagine what kind of shape you are in.I don't know about the shape he was in. DJ BurnsYou posters and so called fans are critical of kids who are too skinny or too fat but maybe you folks should look in the mirror. So if they don't fit your image of the ideal body type to play hoops they are no good? You guys are sad.
Last year there was a kid who was grossly overweight (300 plus pounds) and played in the low post on one of the teams in the tourney and could not be stopped. He was maybe not the most talented but he had heart and desire. I can't remember his name or the team but a good example of not having the perfect body type is not always a measure of success on the court.
Now let's add context here for full transparency...he was a top 100 player his hs sr year...went to tennessee for a redshirt weight loss...left for winthrop where he was the freshman of the year as a redshirt and he was also player of the year 2 years later then he trasnfered to nc state...currently playing in a korean league...DJ Burns
Yup DJ Burns. He was just one example. There were many kids I saw in the NCAA tourney on teams that made the dance that posters on this forum would be critical of because they were too skinny or too fat.DJ Burns
Based on some here if we brought a kid to SHU with his credential he would be attacked because he was too fat. Sad.Now let's add context here for full transparency...he was a top 100 player his hs sr year...went to tennessee for a redshirt weight loss...left for winthrop where he was the freshman of the year as a redshirt and he was also player of the year 2 years later then he trasnfered to nc state...currently playing in a korean league...
IMHO there is long prejudice by many on this board going back close to a quarter century that prospect x is not a high major or big east level contributor but ultimately you have to find the right players...wichita state in 06 and wofford in 19 certainly had players that transcended any conference delineation
you put your life on the line everday for 130k imagine knowing a 2 point per game scorer demanding 5x your slaaryhe sucked basketball wise, maybe a nice person but not worth $$$$$$$$$$
thanks , that sums it up. putting it perspective and thinking broadly when he wasn't high, the great Michael Ray Richardson summed it up in four words "The Ship Be sinking" and that is the state of college bb at this time. Hope for a better system.you put your life on the line everday for 130k imagine knowing a 2 point per game scorer demanding 5x your slaary
Apparently deep bench players are getting that and more. And size is coveted.I am hearing he is looking for 250k in the portal FWIW
yeah hell do well at Vermont then leave again cuz God forbid somebody likes their school and degreeSeems Gus was coming off an ankle injury & a summer bout with mono.
