He lived here in the Lehigh Valley. Often saw him at various outings.

One of the last of the 60 Minute Men. One tough SOB.

Here is the iconic photo of him standing over Frank Gifford after he laid him out and sidelined his career for a bit.

My mom and dad were in Yankee Stadium that day and told me all about that scene many times as a kid. I have a signed kelly green number 60 shirt that is my most prized football collectable. RIP Two Way Concrete Charlie, the greatest Eagle of all time. Oh as an aside, I once was walking in the Linc and saw a man with a 60 shirt. I thought it might say Bednarik on the back but it said "not since", meaning not since 1960 have the Eagles won a world championship. How do I get hooked up with these kinds of teams that always lose? But they're mine.

Was too young to remember him as a player...old NFL FILMS did him justice though keeping his legend alive. Was a member of Saucon Valley and as you could imagine, his crustiness had ticked off a lot of members over the years according to a number of members.

I can vouch for that. Prolific cursing and swearing as he came off the course into the grille room.

Pirate, are you a member of worked there at Saucon? Understand Sandy Kofax and Charles Barcley are also members.

I have a dozen friends who are members and have played there many times.

Koufax was a member at nearby Silvercreek Country Club, which is formally The Bethlehem Steel Club. It went private when Bethlehem Steel sold it back around 1988. I was a member there and Koufax's locker was close to mine albeit I never saw the guy. I believe he left Silvercreek and went to Northampton CC in Easton.

The Steel Club and Saucon often get confused because of the affinity of the two clubs to Bethlehem Steel. The Steel club was run by the Bethlehem Plant as an employee
(Managers and above) perk. Saucon is a private club with great influence by the Bethelem Steel senior execs, most notably, Eugene Grace. Saucon has a rich USGA history hosting several USGA championships, but never the Men's US Open.

There is a famous story that Grace was teeing off the Old Course (Saucon has 60 holes of golf). When he was informed that World War II had broken out he turned to his playing partners and said "Gentlemen, we are going to make a lot of money."

Grace's Quote

I recollect Sir Charles being courted at one point but never joined. It was back around the time they hosted the Women's Open for the first time.

Sure. Played there once in an outing. Enjoyable course.

Thanks for sharing...been reading a book on the history of Bethlehem Steel and it had that qoute from Grace. Fascinating history that is tied directly to the rise and fall of the region. I know a few members at Saucon as well and was fortunate to play there three times last season along with the LVHN outing...I like Weyhill the best. I don't think Kofax is at Northampton...one of the Saucon members told me he was there, but who knows. The two USGA Senior Championships were great events....Larry Loretti and Hale Irwin were winners. Didn't they just host an Amateur Championship or Regional?

Appears you work or live in the Lehigh Valley...sending you a email.
