SETON HALL UNIVERSITY
Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President

The Office of the Provost is very pleased to announce that Seton Hall University’s Board of Regents has approved the formation of a College of Communication and the Arts, effective immediately.

The College of Communication and the Arts is the University’s ninth college/school and will encompass existing undergraduate programs of study in Art, Design, & Interactive Media; Art History; Broadcasting & Visual Media; Communication Studies; Music; Public Relations & Journalism; and Theater, as well as graduate programs in Museum Professions; Public Relations; and Strategic Communication & Leadership.

This endeavor represents the realization of a long-considered strategic objective that has garnered widespread support and enthusiasm throughout the Seton Hall community. The University’s 2003 Sesquicentennial Strategic Plan called for the creation of “an exceptional Communications program in both undergraduate and graduate areas to take advantage of Seton Hall's demographics within the New York hub of world communication.” This affirmative step is the culmination of the efforts of many who have actively engaged in the development process over the past several years.

The College of Communication and the Arts at Seton Hall University will be dedicated to enabling innovative, genuine, and professional interaction in academic, social, artistic, and technological settings. Its diverse and flexible programs, anchored in the humanities and featuring cutting-edge technology and innovative curricula, will provide opportunities for meaningful collaboration across disciplines.

It is expected that the College of Communication and the Arts will bring national attention to Seton Hall University; leverage the expertise of its faculty, our proximity to New York City, the existing program inventory; and provide additional nimbleness in responding to the ever-evolving and growing changes in these disciplines.

In addition, we are pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Deirdre Yates, M.F.A., as Interim Dean for the College of Communication and the Arts, also effective immediately. Classically trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts and The Catholic University of America, Professor Yates is a long-standing and highly respected member of our academic community.

She has taught Theatre Performance classes at Seton Hall since 1992 and is a recipient of the University Humanitarian Award. In addition to her outstanding service to Seton Hall University, Professor Yates has remained a prominent member of the arts community. She has toured the country performing Shakespeare and appearing at regional theatres.

Currently, Professor Yates is a member of the Equity Company, The Yates Musical Theatre for Children, and serves on the Board of Directors for the Celtic Theater Company. The search for the new dean will commence in the fall 2015, and will be facilitated by AGB Search, a division of the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges.

We wish to thank the members of the Communication and the Arts faculty steering committee, including Professor Yates, Professor William H. Haney, Dr. Jon P. Radwan, and Professor Thomas R. Rondinella, for their tireless and outstanding efforts to bring this proposal to fruition. Moreover, we invite all members of the Seton Hall community to join us in celebrating this transformative moment in our University’s very proud history.
