It's getting too depressing for me to talk Pirate Hoops so here is a change the subject question:

OK the never ending question of differing philosophy's. Do you go for the best player on the board or fill a need? This year there are three elite players. Leonard Williams (Defensive line) , Cooper (WR) & Flowers (Outside linebacker). But none of those three will go #1 or #2 because the league is QB centric. So Winston & Mariotta go #1 & #2 though both are question marks. So if one of the elite 3 drop but it is not a position of need what do the Jets or Giants do ???

Tom K

I would take any of those 3 elite players without giving it another thought. Worry about need in the subsequent rounds. How about you?

From a Giants perspective you take either of the defensive players if they fall. If cooper is there at #9 I'm trading down if I don't feel any other players in the range are worth that high of a pick. I can't justify adding another WR with Cruz, OBJ and Randle.

I think you have to take the best player unless it's a position you are truly loaded at and then maybe you take him anyway. From jets perspective if Fowler is there you just grab him instantly. The Jets right now do not need wide receiver as a result of the Marshall trade but I'd grab Cooper anyway. you can't have too many A quality receivers. Williams is a quandry. Jets are loaded on D line but he's the best player in the draft regardless of position. So I'd see what is available to trade down & if not enough take him anyway.

I take the elite player if he's there and worry about the rest later. But it has to be one of those types of "top" talents. This league is about play makers now and with the combination of injury and the salary cap, "position of need" changes every year anyway.

I don't expect any of those 3 to be there when the Giants pick, so I'm hoping they take a stud offensive lineman or sure up that secondary.

The Giants' offense should hum next year as long as that offensive line is average. Richburg is an upgrade back at center, as is Schwartz healthy at guard. They need another stud though. Love what they did with Vereen to sure up RB behind Jennings. Andre Williams isn't ready to assume that role; that's not his skillset either yet.

The wideouts speak for themselves. But besides Beckham, Randle is going to be a FA and Cruz has that injury, so I'd suspect they grab someone there.

Defense? No idea. Secondary very thin. Major position of need. Front looks steady, especially if Beason is healthy and Kennard continues improving. Hankins, JPP, Ayers, and Moore are more than suitable as rushers and I think Spagnuolo will get more out of them than Fewell did schematically.

Todd McShay had the Giants taking Todd Gurley. Why take an RB comming off ACL after sighning Jennings, Vereen and drafting Williiams? If Cooper is avialable they will take him. They would love to put a 6'3" WR with Beckham and I bet Cooper is the highest player on their board. Tackle is a need, but so is a pass rusher especially since JPP will most likey be playing under the franchise tag. Watch they take this DIII OT in the 2nd round that has been talked about being the first DIII player drafted in a logn time.

Last mock draft I saw by Todd McShay has Jets taking Gurley at #6. Quite honestly I don't see either the Jets or Giants using their first pick on him. I could see the Jets taking either Cooper or White if they are on the board at #6 even though WR is no longer a pressing need.

Baffling to me if the Giants take Gurley at #9. Cooper I can understand.

Schreff or Flowers would be my pick.

Giants need to take Scherff or Peat. Whoever is better on their draft board.

Jets should take Mariotta, Cooper, Beasley, White in that order.

Mariotta will be the second pick either by Tennessee or whoever trades up to get him but the price will be huge and how well he will do in the NFL is questionable.

Well with the first pick the Jets went for the best player & not need. Can you go wrong taking the top rated player in the draft even if not a position of need? The Giants did not get the first O-lineman but decided that need was the priority in picking Flowers.

Jets got a good one! I think this pick by the Giants could work out in the long run but this year could be a question mark. Should be interesting but Flowers is a freak that could become their long term left tackle in a few years. Jets get a B+ and Giants a B from me

The Giants were projected to pick Scherrif of Iowa but the Redskins took him at #5. This could turn out for the better as Flowers is a true tackle while some think that Sherriff skills are more in the line with a NFL guard & Guards do not go this high. The Jets got lucky as Williams was considered the top talent in the draft and was expected to go right after the QB's at #3 or #4. But the teams ahead drafted for need rather than value. None of the mock drafts had Williams slipping below #5. Now on to Round #2.

I like the Giants' pick. Either of those two offensive lineman. Now with Pugh, Richburg, and Flowers taken in the past 3 drafts - in addition to signing Schwartz - they should finally start seeing improvement up front.

Gives them improved depth too with John Jerry sliding back likely.

Jets' pick makes for an interesting line configuration. Some talented guys up front.

2nd round picks:

Giants trade up to get landon collins - bama Safety

Jets take Devin Smith - WR Ohio state (28 yds per catch)

Any thoughts ?

Great job by the Giants to trade up and get their safety. This kid is good and much needed and will start from day one. Jets are having a good draft'. Two excellent picks IMO.
