OT- Sad News Passing of a Musical Giant

RIP Brian Wilson. Before my time yet still part of the soundtrack of my life.

Many of you have heard this story but for those that haven’t it’s worth a read. Copied from Reddit.

A little story from Alice Cooper about when Brian Wilson met John Lennon...again.

“I was sitting backstage after the 1974 Grammys with Bernie Taupin (Elton John’s lyricist) and John Lennon. This was when Brian was really having some mental issues.

During the course of the conversation, I kept seeing Brian out of the corner of my eye, just kind of staring at us from different angles. Finally, he came up to the table, bent down and whispered in my ear ‘Hey Alice, introduce me to John Lennon.’ I couldn’t BELIEVE that these two men had never met!

They were virtually neck and neck in the 60’s as the greatest bands on the planet, and I’m SURE they must have crossed paths at some point. But then I thought to myself, ‘Wow, if they REALLY have never met, I’m going to be the one to introduce them and become a part of rock history!’

So I merely said, ‘Brian Wilson, this is John Lennon. John Lennon, this is Brian Wilson.’ Lennon was very cordial and polite, saying things like ‘Hello Brian, I’ve always wanted to meet you. I’ve always admired your work, and Paul and I considered Pet Sounds one of the best albums ever made.’ Brian thanked him and walked away, at which point Lennon went right back to his conversation like nothing had happened.

About ten minutes later, Brian came by our table again, leaned down and whispered something to Bernie, and all of a sudden, Bernie was saying ‘Brian Wilson, this is John Lennon. John Lennon, Brian Wilson.’ Lennon was just as cordial and polite as the first time, saying essentially the same thing about always wanting to meet him.

As soon as Brian walked away, John looked at both of us and casually said in his typical Liverpudlian accent, ‘I’ve met him hundreds of times. He’s not well, you know.’”

Hope Brian found some peace at the end. In one of the articles I read yesterday, he was quoted as saying I had a good childhood except my father always beat the shit out of me. Then when the Beach Boys became popular, the dad sold the rights to all the music behind his back. And the mental illness he suffered, constant voices in his head, my God. RIP Brian

By all accounts, the dad was a major a**hole. I have listened to studio tapes of the dad managing the group through a recording session and he was extremely abusive to all in the group. Uncalled for behavior.

Brian was a genius and a truly tortured soul. Listening to "In My Room" years after its release I heard the lyrics in a new light, with the benefit of context. He was carrying quite a mental burden. I'm sure he could be a difficult person to be with at times, But even so, to me he is a far more sympathetic and likeable person than the blowhard Mike Love.

Two musical geniuses passed away this week. Wilson, and Sly Stone made their impact and charted new territory. Have dozens of songs from each on my playlists. Saw The Beach Boys a couple of times but never Sly & The Family Stone.

Wilson dad was known abuser. Really sad. A concert promoter several years back shared an unpleasant story of The Beach Boys disregard for fans, but I don’t know if that related to Brian specifically or others in the band. Pet Sounds was groundbreaking and a good documentary (The Wrecking Crew) has a great segment on the making of that album and the impact of that group of studio musicians on its making specifically a female bass player .

A true legend. What a remarkable life when you contrast the fame and the struggles.

RIP.

We take mental health for granted. We lucky ones know the sun is coming up tomorrow and things can be better, and we take that for granted, while others wake up certain that this is the best it will ever be and say it isnt worth.

Parenting was different back in the 50's & 60's. The world was changing rapidly & many of our parents had no idea how to handle it based on the way they were raised, in a much more disciplined society.

The drugs certainly didn't help with his mental illness.

I had a tough Irishman for a Dad. His way was the only way. I had 4 siblings. He never raised a hand to any of us. He didnt need to.

Excellent movie I'd highly recommend. Love and Mercy. Really portrays Brian's genius, the creative process and pain of what he was contending with. Also shows the impact that the father caused this poor soul. Paul Dano as the young Brian was great and I believe got a Golden Globe nomination. John Cusack was very good and loved Elizabeth Banks. Also give you a glimpse of the Wrecking Crew which is super cool. Watch it, you won't be disappointed.

Brian rarely went on the road. Bruce Johnston stepped in for him in the later times and Glen Campbell was his surrogate in the early years.
