Per CDC: COVID Mutation About to Become Major Problem

More fear porn but with very interesting timing.
Shu09 deems anything he feels is frightening as fear porn...doubt you ever were much of a newspaper reader or watched local news growing up. Newsflash violence, crime and death is part of the news cycle.

Exactly. Just stop reporting the news so no one needs to be afraid of anything.

Going to hit 400k reported deaths in the US and 2 million reported deaths worldwide today as well.

Maybe, just maybe - it is pretty newsworthy that there is a more virulent strain hitting the US just as we are in the worst weeks of the pandemic?

Auditor the article didn’t say more virulent. It said more transmissible.

In any event, it is newsworthy regardless of one thinks it is newsworthy under the standards referenced above .... anything re death, sex, etc....But 09’s opinion (Fear porn) isn’t necessarily wrong

So-More important...What is the basis for saying it is more transmissible? I get it’s a new strain so I assume there’s research to show it’s easier to catch(?)....for instance (and excuse the simple example), if you get the old strain by being within 5 feet of someone, for new strain is it now 15 feet? Would appreciate it if someone has info on that - and sorry if same had already been shared and I missed it

Apparently, it's more efficient in that it might bind to your cells more easily. You might breath in the virus and not get infected with both strains but that is less likely to happen with the new strain.

Don't you guys see what's happening? Next they'll tell us the vaccines aren't as effective as they thought and we'll be in a perpetually restrictive environment with state and federal governments limiting your freedoms, rights and ability to earn a living. All designed to increase dependence on government.

The problem with that theory is that world leader and every scientist around the world who researches infectious diseases and vaccine development would have to be in on it.

The likelihood of that being true seems extraordinarily slim.

over 400,000 Americans are dead because of a novel virus. The measures we took were to buy time. If too many people get infected at once, we overload the healthcare system. We were also buying time for effective treatments and vaccine development. If the vaccine doesn’t work, we will likely say it didn’t work and slowly work towards herd immunity... but at least we tried what we thought would work.

I agree with 09 on this one. This is why we will continue to wear masks for the rest of our lives. Government will have more control over us. I still can't believe you think we will have a normal summer. I think we will definitely still be wearing masks and restaurants will still only be at 25% capacity.

I’m glad you agree with 09. That might make him reconsider the theory.

It’s not a theory you’re a sheep. I didn’t mean that personally-we all are

400,000 dead. An epic failure of our government that after 10 months in this nightmare they couldn't act like adults and craft a sensible relief agenda instead of the shit they throw at the wall hoping it sticks. Handing out money to people whove been working this whole time is a joke (myself), paying people more than they made while working is a joke, allowing Home Depot to be open but shuttering many other businesses is a joke. The vaccine rollout has been a joke in NJ, why would a 30 year old that smokes be able to get a vaccine before a 65 year old that doesnt smoke. Claiming a virus effects non-whites greater than whites is a joke.

I just mean the theory that Covid and our response to it is all about government taking control of our lives, and that the vaccine isn't going to work as a part of that plan doesn't seem reasonable to me.

I haven't had the opportunity to wear it yet. I have not gone outside since March 2020. The first time I go outside will probably be when I go for my Vaccine. And the rate the vaccines are moving now that probably won't be to this summer. I will definitely be wearing my hazmat suit then.

We both agree the virus is serious. You generally trust government response. I generally don’t. I think that summarizes our positions fairly.

The reason you hand out money at a time like this, even to people who don't "need" it is to provide some level of certainty for businesses so they know people have some money and encourage consumer spending. Without the government doing that, consumer confidence goes down and spending goes down which further exacerbates the employment problems which could potentially spiral out of control.

If you don't need it, spend it somewhere you normally wouldn't have. Tip a little extra when you get food etc.

Huh? What businesses are they spending $ on? Amazon ? Apple? Stop that nonsense. 1400 doesn’t give a single normal business owner any confidence.

In some cases sure. Amazon employees people in your community, those people having a job means that they will have economic certainty and the ability to spend money in your community as well.
In other cases, maybe they were hiring contractors for a job they have been thinking of or getting take our more often.

Direct payments to citizens is not perfect but it is absolutely the most effective and efficient form of economic stimulus we have.

$1400 - stop it. what other wasteful crap is in the package? It’s ANOTHER liberal policy that is good hearted but actually hurts everyone in the long run. Do something to encourage business to spend.

This is the critical question. I believe when the variant was first isolated in England, the percentage of people who had the variant Covid was higher than expected at least compared to the “regular” variant. There is no proof so far (that I can find) that the variant is in fact more transmissible although I would expect doctors are working to answer that question.

The two follow up questions - is it more lethal and is it resistant to the vaccine are not answered either although scientists who discuss it are careful to say they don’t think it is.

Unfortunately, we’ll have wait until there is more evidence one way or another.

The best thing you can do to encourage businesses to spend is to make sure that people have money to spend at those businesses.

Businesses’ TE is such a market driver and we’ve done ZIP to stimulate that

That’s great. I didn’t see that. I would love to see govt issued (or govt backstopped) construction loans to hospitals, movie theaters, restaurants, malls....the incoming President says infrastructure is a priority so I’m looking forward to details as he gets his arms around the issue. Thanks for sharing.

The virus is 100% real. The response to it is what I take issue with. Governments around the world have used the virus as an excuse to implement incredibly restrictive and controlling measures. Governments do not let crises go to waste. They never have. They take a real issue, blow it out of proportion, scare the people and implement what they want to fit their needs for power.

Look at Boris Johnson. Single handedly destroying the United Kingdom.

I guess what I don't understand is what characterizes overreaction?
Had we done more to control the virus we would have less deaths than we do now. Had we done less, we would have more. So at what point do you look at this and think it was less about government control and more about a normal reaction to a novel virus? I just honestly don't understand how someone can look at 400,000+ dead Americans and think we were too restrictive.

Not true. Virus gonna virus no matter what we do.

I just honestly don't understand how someone can look at 400,000+ dead Americans and think we were too restrictive.

As I've said, having only 400,000+ deaths in nearly one year from this should be viewed as a success. We're a country of 330 million people, many of them old and/or unhealthy. This virus targets the old and the unhealthy for the most part. I'm happy we haven't lost more.

Agree virus will virus. But we had to prevent proverbial run on hospitals and that happened
