I would love it if some of the big mouths in the stands who think they can officiate from x yards away as they sit on their fat rear ends would have the fortitude to take a class and try to officiate.
Yes, I officiate. I am young among the crowd and I am approaching my late 60s. (I can still get up and down the field/court - but not for much longer_.
There is an extreme shortage of officials. The youngsters who think they want to stay connected to the game, whether hoops, soccer, football, baseball, etc, often drop it after a year or two because of the absurd conduct on the sidelines and the stands and sometimes on the field (soccer players are especially guilty there).
The good ones stick it out, work on their craft, get a lucky break and climb the ladder to do D1 with a nice payday. But most toil at the lower levels with the metaphorical cotton in their ears to drown out the blather as they try their best to do a thankless job.
