Philly Shutting Down

https://www.bizjournals.com/philade...hia-shutting-down-indoor-dining-gyms-fri.html

All restaurants, gyms, etc. shutting down on Friday until at least the end of the year. How can a team practice, play? Seems like this is the end of this season.
i guess we hope for a mild winter. lots of restaurants have figured out how to make it with outdoor seating and heating. it could potentially make it easier to plan staff against, as indoor right now has been a crapshoot turnout. takeout seems to have been running a great business.

however the rest is BS, and i havent had too much of a problem with the initial restrictions. youth sports prohibited? cmon. "being asked to discontinue the practice of going to the suburbs." Fat chance, you cant force people not to travel to a place that better suits them in a free country.

we'll see what prohibiting household visits actually means. cant imagine it being anything other than a suggestion to which up to this point it has been.

let the super market madness begin

I’ve heard from a couple restaurant managers that a NJ shutdown isn’t far behind. Two of the three I talked to today said they wouldn’t be surprised if it’s here by Friday.

Hearing the same. The state government is going to put droves more people out of business, and then grandstand like heroes when they successfully bilk the federal government for "aid" money to help the very same small businesses that won't even exist anymore. At that point, Murphy will have free reign to quietly "re-allocate" the money to his choice of pecial interest initiatives.

I'll remove my tinfoil hat now.

11/23 so I hear

Funny you say the 23rd. Someone else told me the 23rd too, but it will be announced on the 18th. Makes no sense to me if we’re shutting down why wait 5 days, but anyone’s guess is as good as mine at this point.

I thought the original PPP loans made to small businesses like mine were ingenious. I could have taken the money and went to Hawaii ( but would have to pay it back plus interest) but if I hired all my employees back the loans was forgiven and the taxpayers pay it.
If the government does that again, not only will small businesses die off, but taxpayers are going to pay for everyone's wages as they stay home.

My guess would be maybe to give time for certain items to be wrapped up? like if they are closing courts they can close out legal proceedings before shutting down, complete records requests etc.

I could see indoor dining and possibly outdoor dining being closed.

But I really can’t see Murphy shutting down non essential retail again as he would basically be killing retails busiest time of the year, it would devastate those closed business, plus he would become governor who cancelled Christmas.

Also never made sense that Walmart and Target were open, but place like Bed Bath Beyond had to stay closed.

Latest I heard from my Murphy admin source is expect announcement later this week early next week. Restaurants will be take out only and non essential businesses closed to mid Jan/early Feb. Schools is the big question mark.

Currently in a state that's relatively open. It's wonderful. Went to a restaurant last night, had a great meal. People going about their lives, mask wearing in stores and other indoor places. This is how it should be. If NJ is going to shut down again, I might not come back. Just incredibly foolish policy.

Can you clarify what would be different if you were in NJ right now?

Follow the conversation. The conversation is about a potential shutdown in NJ to come soon.

Seemed like when you you said that it’s wonderful that you were comparing it to NJ now. I just wasn’t sure if I missed something related to what was good about the state you were in compared to NJ, sorry if I misunderstood.

Hi @shu09. I hope all is well. Happy you are out of Jersey for now. It is crazy people have faith in Phil Murphy. Sad thing is a lot of people on this board will vote for him!

what's more crazy is that the majority of the people who live in this state will vote for him again.

One thing this pandemic has demonstrated is that politicians are not our best and brightest.

It's sad that you don't see what's happening.

Right back at ya on that one.

I think we all see what is happening. We just have differences on what we believe the appropriate response is to a pandemic.

That said, I would still be interested to know what state you are referring to so we can understand what they did differently that you prefer.

What's happening is an extraordinary power grab by state and local governments. Power they will not relinquish once this is over. Very sad/scary that ordinary citizens don't see this.

Right, I understand your fear. I just don't really understand where you are going with it.

Assume the vaccines are all safe and effective and the threat from the pandemic is pretty much over by May next year. What is he government not relinquishing? What are they doing at that point that you are afraid of?

Mask mandate after pandemic is over

Mandating that you report to public places if you have been vaccinated

A "vaccine license" that you would have to scan whenever you go to a public place.

We can’t have a voter ID card, but we can mandate a vaccine license? Good luck with that...

As to your first example, why would anyone care to have a mask mandate after the pandemic is over? It makes no sense.
Second, the government cannot make you report to public places. That would be unconstitutional. Therefore, not happening.

Third example, well. That may happen. Prove you are vaccinated to enter a bar or restaurant. This could be a way to keep businesses open u til a sufficient percentage of the population is vaccinated. But this is not a power grab. It would be for public health. But local and state government do not want to be in the business of doing mask mandates and vaccine checks. There are more mportant things to be doing. We shall soon find out for sure soon.

Hello. Science has now been pushing the narrative that masks prevent "Any Respiratory Illness". Using that narrative the government will use this as a power grab to say that people will continue to wear mask to prevent other people from getting sick. This will be for the "Greater Good".
